In the aftermath of the horrible tragedy that was Shane del Rosario’s death, a shining light can come out of this horrible situation.

In the midst of his horrible passing, Yahoo! Sports’ Kevin Iole reports that del Rosario’s family plans to not only donate the former UFC heavyweight’s organs, but also create a foundation. This is a bright spot in an overwhelmingly sad situation.

Here is part of a statement made by the family in which their intentions going forward are made:

Shane leaves a legacy of giving to others. In that spirit it was Shane’s wish to donate his organs in hope of saving the precious lives of others. The family is also exploring establishing a scholarship fund for disadvantaged children and setting up a foundation, the Shane Del Rosario Long QT Foundation. Long QT Syndrome is the genetic anomaly that may have contributed to his passing.

The former Strikeforce and UFC fighter suffered cardiac arrest on November 26, but fought for his life for about two weeks before passing Sunday.

Del Rosario was an 11-2 mixed martial artist known for his finishing prowess, as he knocked out eight opponents and submitted three. He also held a 3-0 amateur Muay Thai record, as well as an 8-1 kickboxing record.

Despite coming from such a tragic situation, organ donation is one of the best things a person can do, even after their last breath is taken.

It appears the unfortunate passing of del Rosario could save the lives of many others. In addition to him giving up his organs, the foundation the del Rosario family is setting up can spread awareness of an affliction that many people aren’t familiar with. As mentioned in the statement, it is suspected del Rosario had Long QT syndrome.

While del Rosario has passed on, we can remember him for his gracious gift on the way out of this life. Hopefully the UFC acknowledges del Rosario this Saturday at UFC on Fox 9, where they have the opportunity to give him a proper sendoff.
