UFC officials announced on Wednesday that former UFC light heavyweight champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua has been forced to pull out of his scheduled bout with Rashad Evans at UFC on FOX 19.
Former title contender Glover Teixeira has agreed to step in for Rua and fight Evans at the event.
Teixeira (24-4) is currently on a two-fight winning streak. In his last six bouts, he’s 4-2. He beat James Te Huna at UFC 160 by first-round guillotine choke and Ryan Bader at UFC Fight Night 28 by first-round knockout. He lost to Jon Jones at UFC 172 by unanimous decision and then to Phil Davis at UFC 179 the same way. He submitted Ovince St. Preux in the third round via rear naked choke at UFC Fight Night 73. He knocked out Patrick Cummins in the second round at UFC Fight Night 77.
Teixeira vs. Evans will serve as the co-main event of this event.
UFC on FOX 19 takes place on April 16th from the Amalie Arena in Tampa, FL. The main card will air on FOX while the prelims will air on FOX Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass. The main event will be Khabib Nurmagomedov (22-0) vs. Tony Ferguson (20-3).
