Former UFC light heavyweight champion and current Bellator fighter (more or less) Tito Ortiz has officially been charged with two counts of DUI following his now-infamous Porsche accident. TMZ broke the news (you can read their report here).
At 4 AM on January 6, 2014, the former MMA superstar crashed his expensive car into the concrete median of a Los Angeles freeway after a night of partying at the Playboy Mansion. Police officers appeared on the scene and asked Ortiz to submit to a breathalyzer test, yielding a 0.12 blood alcohol concentration reading (which is 50-percent over the California legal limit of 0.08).
While he hasn’t fought since 2012, “The Huntington Beach Bad Boy” has been an absolute machine when it comes to producing headlines over the last year.
The biggest story in the MMA world was his prominent role in the defunct Bellator pay-per-view event, Bellator 106. Ortiz was set to headline the card opposite fellow disgruntled former UFC champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson. The fight was heavily built up by Bellator (as well as TNA Impact Wrestling) only to get nixed when Ortiz was forced to withdraw due to a neck injury.
The event was then taken off pay-per-view and shown for free on Spike TV. Jackson was removed from the card entirely.
Outside the cage, and presumably while sober, Ortiz has been keeping himself busy with an ugly, bitter divorce and custody battle with his now ex-wife, Jenna Jameson. The former pornographic actress has been on a steady downward spiral over the last two years.
If Ortiz is convicted, he faces up to six months in jail. However, given that this is his first offense (and that he is a celebrity), he is more likely to receive probation and fines instead.
