In tonight’s first heavyweight bout, Travis Browne (13-0-1) picked up a first-round submission win over Strikeforce veteran Chad Griggs (11-2).
Browne quickly got his opponent down after delivering a double flying knee. Once Browne obtained full mount, he locked on the arm-triangle choke, moved to side mount and forced his opponent to tap.
“I belong here,” Browne said in his post-fight interview. “UFC heavyweights, watch out.”
Now 4-0-1 in the UFC, Browne is quickly becoming one of the better UFC heavyweights rising through the ranks, especially when considering his win streak. Not many HW’s are on a win streak outside of champion Junior dos Santos, Frank Mir and Mark Hunt.
For his next bout, it will have to come against a quality opponent. Even if it’s not going to put him into contention, a fight vs. the winner of the upcoming Lavar Johnson and Pat Barry fight would be fireworks.
Tonight’s pay-per-view event will be headlined by UFC light heavyweight champion Jon “Bones” Jones, who will be taking on a former teammate in “Sugar” Rashad Evans, who is a former champion and currently riding a four-fight win streak.
Both have been hyping the fight since last year, when Jones replaced Evans against Mauricio “Shogun” Rua and defeated him in the third round to win the title and become the youngest UFC champion.
Since his win over Rua, Jones has defeated Lyoto Machida and Quinton Jackson to seal off what was one of the more impressive years of a mixed martial artist.
Other bouts on the card include Rory MacDonald vs. Che Mills, Brendan Schaub vs. Ben Rothwell, Michael McDonald vs. Miguel Torres, Mark Hominick vs. Eddie Yagin and Mark Bocek vs. John Alessio.
