Junior dos Santos and Mark Hunt, two of the nicest guys in the UFC’s heavyweight division, faced off in the co-main event of UFC 160. The final ruling of the fight, a TKO, came as no surprise, but how it ended, yeah, that was a surprise.
The two fighters stayed mostly at distance in the early going of the bout, but with three minutes, 20 seconds left in the first round, dos Santos decided to close that distance, landing a big right hand behind the ear of Hunt. The punch dropped Hunt, but Hunt just rolled through and got back to his feet, looking to land some strikes of his own. He was only marginally successful, landing but never really hurting dos Santos.
In the second round, dos Santos looked to keep Hunt at bay with his jabs, but Hunt was able to sneak within range with 1:45 left in the round and tag dos Santos. Dos Santos circled out of Hunt’s range after tasting the power of his opponent and took Hunt to the mat, holding him there for the remainder of the round. The takedown was not appreciated by most of the crowd, who booed the ground actions.
When the third round began, dos Santos was on his bicycle, jabbing, moving and staying out of the range of Hunt. As the fight closed in on the final minute, dos Santos threw caution to the wind and tried a technique that we had never seen from him before, a spinning wheel kick.
The kick landed with devastating results, sending Hunt to the ground and ending the fight at the 4:18 mark of the final stanza.
