2012 has been a really bad year for Jason “Mayhem” Miller. In fact, that’s an understatement. 2012 has been probably one of the worst years of Jason “Mayhem” Miller’s life.
His MMA career reached an end when he lost to CB Dolloway by decision in a very underwhelming fight. In the lead up, he promised that should be lose, he would retire from MMA. To the best of my knowledge, he was a man of his word and had decided to walk away from the sport.
His downward spiral continued when he was arrested this past August for breaking into the Mission Hills Church in California where he was found naked on one of the church’s couches. This occurred only a few days after Miller and UFC President Dana White exchanged some heated words on twitter regarding Miller’s retirement.
Since that incident, Miller remained pretty quiet and out of the public eye. It was apparent to everyone that he was working through some real issues and needed time away from what is often a very critical MMA fanbase.
As a co-star of the upcoming Kevin James movie Here Comes the Boom, Miller made a rare appearance on his real-life friend Ariel Helwani‘s show The MMA Hour at the SBNation Video Studios in New York to promote the film.
Helwani expected to speak with Miller about his life and the hard times he’s experienced as of late. Miller had other ideas. Much like Andy Kaufman, Miller refused to break character and continually referenced himself as Lucky Patrick, the character he portrays in the aforementioned film.
For nearly 15 minutes, Miller got more and more agitated as Helwani tried to keep the conversation professional. He began to wreck the studio and was an all-around maniac. When he finally walked out on the show, Helwani was speechless.
It took almost 15 minutes for the show to continue and Helwani was visibly shaken. He explained that Miller was one of the first fighters that really stood up for him when he was getting his start.
He continued that he trusted him so much that he actually asked Miller to send a letter to the government for him when he was applying for a green card because a letter from a fighter would be good support for his story about what his job entails and Miller did it for him (only this past February too).
Fans have often viewed the “Mayhem” character as just another layer of who Jason Miller truly is as a person. We all have different personae and “Mayhem” was viewed as the over-the-top personality of Jason Miller.
After this appearance, I’m not sure there is any part of Jason Miller left. He’s committed so much to this character that it’s my belief he can’t turn it off. While I sometimes enjoy his antics, it’s become more and more clear that someone needs to sit him down and try and bring him back to reality.
If not, I fear that he may be too far gone and he’ll continue his path of self-destruction. As a fan, I hope he can get help. I hope that there are people around him that are willing to do whatever it takes to get him the help he so desperately needs.
Basically, I hope this is as bad as it gets because I fear what will happen next.
