Dana White says Conor McGregor needs to get back to MMA, but notes how badly the UFC lightweight champion wants another crack at Floyd Mayweather.

Conor McGregor is just over four months removed from his 10th round TKO loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr. in what was the UFC lightweight champion’s pro boxing debut. Once thought as a longshot to materialize, McGregor did end up getting the chance to face one of the greatest boxers of his era, and earned even more oodles of cash along the way.

While we don’t know if or when McGregor is coming back to MMA, he does say he wants a “true fight” next, meaning an MMA bout. UFC president Dana White wants him to return to the Octagon, where he’s the sport’s biggest star, but did note how much McGregor wants another crack at Floyd.

“Conor wants that fight again really bad,” White recently said to FS1 (transcription via MMA Weekly). “I told Conor what you did was amazing. I was sitting there with my partner Lorenzo [Fertitta] and I kept saying, ‘Oh my god, we found this kid in Ireland four years ago. He’s going into the sixth round with Floyd Mayweather. He’s going into the seventh round with Floyd Mayweather.’

“He did extremely well, but Conor was not happy with his performance and obviously Conor, truly he believed he was going to win that fight.”

McGregor was also disappointed with the stoppage decision made by referee Robert Byrd, who ended the fight while the Irishman was still standing, albeit taking several unanswered shots and with the gas tank pretty much on empty. It’s the only time he’s lost by TKO, whether in MMA or his singular pro fight in boxing.

Getting back to MMA, White recently said that he’s looking for McGregor to make his UFC return in the summer, and specifically against interim champion Tony Ferguson, who is currently sidelined after shoulder surgery.

Dana White Says He’ll Book Cyborg vs. Amanda Nunes Next

UFC women’s featherweight champion Cris Cyborg successfully defended her title via decision against ex-bantamweight titleholder Holly Holm in the main event of UFC 219 last weekend (Dec. 30, 2017) in Las Vegas, Nevada.

With another UFC victory under her belt, talk immediately turned to just who Cyborg would fight next due to the fact that the promotion doesn’t really have a featherweight division filled with contenders.

UFC President Dana White has an idea though, and in a recent interview with Yahoo! Sports he said that a fight between Cyborg and 135-pound titleholder Amanda Nunes is the ‘fight to make’:

“Amanda Nunes wants to fight Cyborg,” White said. “That is the fight to make, and that is the fight I will make. That’s the fight.

“Amanda Nunes is a big, strong, powerful puncher. I think she matches up very well with Cyborg too, and I think that’s a fun fight. And that’s the fight to make.”

Not only is it a ‘fun’ fight like White mentioned, but it also appears to be the perfect timing for such a bout to take place given the fact that Nunes is also in need of a fresh challenger.

The 135-pound titleholder has won six consecutive bouts, while defending her strap two times to date. She owns notable victories over Miesha Tate and Ronda Rousey and she’s coming off of a second, albeit a bit controversial, win over Valentina Shevchenko.

Would you like to see Cyborg and Nunes share the cage?

Ever since their exchange on social media earlier this week, there has been a lot of chatter about a potential fight between current UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor and title contender Khabib Nurmagomedov.

It all started following Nurmagomedov’s dominating win over Edson Barboza at this past Saturday’s UFC 219 PPV event when the title contender stated that would be willing to fight McGregor and interim champ Tony Ferguson on the same night.

This led to McGregor and Nurmagomedov firing shots at each other. Current UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier, who is slated to defend his title against Volkan Oezdemir in the co-main event of UFC 220 later this month in Boston, going to Twitter stating that it would difficult for McGregor to connect with a one-punch knockout of Nurmagomedov.

“DC” wrote the following on his official Twitter account:

“70-80% Conor would have to knock him out or he would be in trouble. And I don’t know if anyone can knock him out unless he gets kicked in head or knee. No punch will do it.”

Despite the fact that the title contender has been inactive as of late by only fighting three times in the past three and a half years, he is still considered as a top choice to challenge for the title next.

On the flip side, McGregor hasn’t fought in the Octagon in over a year and has yet to defend his lightweight title.

Instead, he spent his time hyping a mega-boxing match with Floyd Mayweather Jr. As seen in the fight, he lost it via 10th-round TKO at Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena this past August.

Nick Diaz didn’t cheat, suspended by USADA anyway

Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) welterweight No. 1 contender, Nick Diaz, has not competed inside the Octagon since his No Contest against Anderson Silva at the UFC 183 pay-per-view (PPV) event roughly three years back.

He couldn’t fight, even if he wanted to.

That’s because Diaz is suspended by United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) after failing to report his whereabouts during 2017. Under the promotion’s drug-testing program, athletes are required to provide their location at all times.

And as UFC vice president of athlete health and performance Jeff Novitzky explained to Joe Rogan, Diaz has been snared multiple times over the last 12 months because of his laissez faire attitude, not because of cheating.

Transcribed by MMA Junkie:

“Nick was our first fighter that ran into the whereabouts issue. So he got three whereabouts failures in a rolling 12 months, so he’s currently going through that process. It’s a tough one. I think he does (want to fight). I’ve sat down with him over the past couple months trying to resolve this whereabouts issues. The unfortunate thing there is, look, the whereabouts failures are there to catch people that are cheating and trying to avoid testing. I just think Nick’s lifestyle led to those three whereabouts, not that he was trying to avoid testing. We’re trying to work through that. (Diaz) trusted certain individuals to do his whereabouts for him. What I think happened was, over time, those individuals were in and out of his life, and it was unbeknownst to him that he was missing all these things. But again, there’s strict liability here. He’s currently under sanction, but we’re hoping to resolve that pretty quick.”

Good luck with that.

According to promotion president Dana White, Diaz will never fight again. That’s a shame, especially when you consider what the former Strikeforce welterweight champion has accomplished in mixed martial arts (MMA) across his nearly two decades in combat sports.

In addition to paving the way for a new generation of fighters, Diaz (26-9, 2 NC) laid the groundwork for modern day villains, thanks to his fearless approach to fighting, coupled with his devil-may-care attitude to life outside the cage.

For better or worse.

The chances of Diaz returning anytime soon are remote, and that appears to hold true for his younger and equally talented brother Nate, but that hasn’t kept either of them out of the headlines.

If they can’t play by the current rules, then perhaps UFC should release them so they can go fight in Japan.
