MMA legend and longtime UFC veteran “The Axe Murderer” Wanderlei Silva is lucky to be alive following a hit-and-run incident that took place on Wednesday. Silva was riding his bike after a training session when he was hit by a car. Now, Silva will have to undergo shoulder and knee surgery.

“I’m extreme in everything I do. Everybody says that bicycle was dangerous, and I believed that the right of coming and going was the same for everyone, cars, bikes and people, but I felt that it’s not exactly like that,” Silva posted on his Instagram account.

“I suffered a serious accident, will have to undergo shoulder and left knee surgery. A man that saw (the accident) said ‘you were born again’, and the man that hit me didn’t stop to help! I’m really upset because I could have died. My helmet is broken, and I don’t know what would have happened if I weren’t using it.”

Silva was given a lifetime ban by the NSAC back in May of 2015 because he evaded a drug test in connection with a planned fight against Chael Sonnen at UFC 175 in 2014. However, the ruling was overturned, and the commission voted to lift the ban and instead suspend Silva for three years. He is eligible to apply for a license on May 25, 2017, which is when he will be able to fight again in the United States.

Silva (35-12-1-1) is 3-2-1 in his last six bouts and is coming off a tag team grappling match against Kazushi Sakuraba and Hideo Tokoro in April at Rizin 1. That match ended in a draw.

“I had severe injuries and don’t know what’s going to happen, but I believe in God, and I know everything has a reason,” he wrote. “I will do my best and let it be what God wants. I could have died if I weren’t using a helmet. That made me rethink my life and made me grow a lot. Live well because it’s over soon. God bless you — and if you’re riding a bike, use a helmet because we never know when we’re going to need it.”

Então vou fazer meu melhor e seja o q Deus quiser ! Se estivesse sem capacete poderia ter morrido ! Isso me fez repensar sobre minha vida , e me fez crescer muito ! Então viva bem pois daqui a pouco acaba ! Deus te abençoar e se anda de bike use capacete, pois nunca sabemos quando vamos precisar !

UFC 198 is stacked, but the main card isn’t the only place you will find high-level action with heavy implications.

The Fox Sports 1 featured preliminary contest is a high-stakes welterweight showdown between Matt Brown and Demian Maia, ranked No. 5 in Bleacher Report’s May rankings of the weight class.

After back-to-back decision losses to Robbie Lawler and Johny Hendricks, Brown submitted Tim Means in the first round to re-establish his spot in the division. A win over Maia would put him back in the running for a shot at the strap.

Maia is on a four-fight win streak, and a victory on Saturday may make him the next title contender. His UFC 194 performance against Gunnar Nelson is a shining example of just how skilled the Brazilian is.

It’s time to break down the matchup between two of the upper echelon in the welterweight division, and see who makes a claim at being the next challenger for divisional gold.

UFC 198 Video: Watch Vitor Belfort cutting weight with odd breathing technique

Plus: Open workout footage of Fabricio Werdum, Stipe Miocic and Cyborg in the fourth episode of UFC 198 Embedded.

Classical music, a guy wrapped in white cloth gasping for air while he is sitting cross-legged in the middle of a room, surrounded by other people that watch him — what sounds like some crazy kind of séance is the odd weight-cutting ritual by UFC veteran Vitor Belfort. This was detailed in the latest episode of UFC 198 Embedded, which you can watch above.

“The first step was to make a metabolic acceleration by doing breathing exercises,” Belfort’s karate coach Vinicio Anthony explained the strange procedure. “He keeps himself well oxygenated as his body temperature rises, which helps him to lose weight. We wrapped him with many towels to help his body not to lose the heat generated through breathing. So he starts sweating and loses water weight. It helps with the weight loss.”

Belfort faces Ronaldo Souza at UFC 198, which takes place this Saturday in Curitiba, Brazil, and is headlined by a heavyweight title fight between Fabricio Werdum and Stipe Miocic.

Also on this episode: Cyborg returns to her first passion, the game of Handball, and footage of the open-workout sessions from Werdum, Miocic and Cyborg.

Longtime Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) veteran Gray Maynard, who rose to fame as a contestant on The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 5, will abandon the lightweight division — where he once held the No. 1 contender spot — to try his luck at 145 pounds.

That’s according to a report from Las Vegas Review-Journal.

I don’t think it’s insensitive to suggest another loss marks the end of his ZUFFA career, as the 36-year-old “Bully” is just 1-5-1 over the past six years, is riding a four-fight losing streak, and has been knocked out four times during that span. Hopefully his year-long vacation was enough to get those batteries recharged.

Standing in his way at the upcoming TUF 23 Finale on July 8, 2016 in Las Vegas, Nevada, will be UFC sophomore Fernando Bruno (15-3). “Acougueiro,” 34, made his Octagon debut at UFC 190 following a torrid run on the Brazilian circuit, but was promptly choked out by Glaico Franca.

TUF 23 Finale will be headlined by the strawweight title fighting pitting 115-pound champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk against top contender and fellow reality show coach Claudia Gadelha. Elsewhere on the FOX Sports 1 card, TUF 9 champ Ross Pearson collides with James Krause.
