After a competitive first frame, “The Reem” ended the proceedings in the second to solidify his claim as the division’s number one contender. The co-main event saw another native Dutchman, Stefan Struve, right his ship by blasting Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva into oblivion only 16 seconds into the very first round. Here’s how the Twitter-verse reacted to the heavyweight double-header:

Seasoned heavyweight sluggers Stefan Struve and Antonio ‘Bigfoot’ Silva both had a lot to prove before their co-main event bout at today’s (Sun., May 8, 2016) UFC Fight Night 87 from the Ahoy Rotterdam in Rotterdam, Netherlands.

Both fighters had lost three of their previous four, and with knockout losses mounting up, a loss could have been the end of either competitor’s UFC run, at least for now. There was also a lot of additional pressure on the 7’0″ Struve, who was fighting in front of his native Dutch fans.

Rather than succumb to that pressure, however, ‘The Skyscraper’ rose to it, nailing the charging ‘Bigfoot’ with some stinging punches before rocking him with a vicious knee to the body and eventually finishing the former title challenger with a torrent of elbows on the ground.

It was the statement win that Struve needed to right the ship and get back on track in the rollercoaster ride that is the UFC heavyweight division. Watch the full fight video highlights of his quick — but thoroughly impressive win right here:

If you like the big boys, UFC Fight Night 87 was for you.

The main and co-main events of the card, which took place in Rotterdam, Netherlands, and aired Sunday afternoon in the United States, featured heavyweight fighters. In the headliner, converted centaur Alistair Overeem clashed with former UFC champion Andrei Arlovski in a bout that could determine the division’s next title challenger.

One slot down the slate, Antonio Silva and Stefan Struve weren’t knocking on the champion’s door quite so loudly, but they still brought the promise of a classically artless, show-stopping heavyweight slobber-knocker.

Come for the heavyweights, stay for a 13-fight card with some interesting matchups and results. As usual, the final stat lines only reveal so much. These are the real winners and losers from UFC Fight Night 87.

For the literal-minded among us, full results appear on the final slide.

Alistair Overeem Decimates Andrei Arlovski In Rotterdam

A lot was on the line when decorated Dutch veteran Alistair Overeem faced off with former heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski in the main event of today’s (Sun., May 8, 2016) UFC Fight Night 87 from the Ahoy Rotterdam in Rotterdam, Netherlands.

As the only man who could conceivably headline the UFC’s Dutch debut, Overeem was looking for a title shot on the strength of a four-fight win streak after he knocked out former champion Junior dos Santos last December.

Arlovski, meanwhile was looking to rebound from a fast knockout loss to title challenger Stipe Miocic at UFC 195, a result that snapped an impressive six-fight win streak for the longtime veteran. The winner at UFC Rotterdam would swim in the notoriously volatile UFC heavyweight waters, while the loser would sink for now.

And of course, everyone was expecting fireworks from the two thunderous knockout sluggers.

The pivotal heavyweight fight started off with the crowd not surprisingly chanting Overeem’s name. He started out calm and calculating, but Arlovski poured it on with some big shots including uppcercuts, a hook to the body, and a knee. The former champ stayed pressuring on Overeem, who landed a quick knee to the body. A clinch saw two big knees to the body and head from Overeem.

“The Reem” finally rushed in, landing a hard shot and a knee. Overeem followed with a hard body kick, and Arlovski slowed as he swung at air. Overeem got another knee and scored a nice trip, following Arlovski to the ground. The home favorite went to work from inside Arlovski’s guard, landing hard right hands only to eat an upkick as the opening round came to a close.

Arlovski came out with a big lunging overhand that only partially landed in the second. He continued pressing the action , but Overeem countered with some stiff punches and two hard kicks. Arlovski fought back, but Overeem landed an absolutely emphatic front kick to the jaw and a follow-up shot that dropped him.

He followed to the ground with a barrage of ground shots to earn the stoppage and quite possibly a title shot, although his toe was dislocated on the front kick. The cageside doctor popped his toe right back into place, but he could be out for some time.

After the win, Overeem had some outspoken words, calling out the champion in his native Dutch:

“I said, we’re gonna get that belt in November. November 12, Madison Square Garden. Werdum-Stipe; may the best man win, but I’m going to take on that winner; I’m gonna beat that winner. And then next year, 2017, we’ll be defending the belt here in Amsterdam Arena.”

Quite the bold statement, but at this point, it’s tough to deny “The Reem” on the heels of four straight wins capped off by this spectacular performance.

Final Result: Alistair Overeem def. Andrei Arlovski via R2 TKO (front kick and punches, 1:12)

Here we go, Bigfoot Silva and Stefan Struve collide at UFC Fight Night 87, Struve lands a huge knee and that’s literally it. Less than 30 seconds gone and Bigfoot Silva is out cold. A 1-2 combo of punches in the stand up leaves Bigfoot wobbled and then a knee dropped him. ‘Skyscraper’ finished the bout with ten stright unanswered elbows and that was that.

Silva appeared to be out cold, but he protested quite a bit when the referee stepped in. Was he out? The replay doesn’t really tell us too much.

The official decision is in and it’s a first round TKO stoppage for Stefan Struve, great win for ‘Skyscraper’ in front of his home fans.

Struve pays tribute to his Blackzilians team mate Jordan Parsons who tragically died this week aged just 25.
