Zuffa Threatens UbiSoft, Software Company Taps Out

The on-screen character replicates the movements that the player makes in his living room, and virtual beatdowns ensue. That’s the concept, at least. In reality, the game has been beaten up so bad by critics that Dana White wanted to fire it.

Developed by AMA Studios and published by UbiSoft, the French company known for franchises Assassin’s Creed, Rayman, FarCry, and every Tom Clancy-inspired video game you’ve ever heard of, Fighters Uncaged has been universally panned for being a giant turd sandwich of entertainment.  Props for taking risks and pushing the envelope, we guess, but this was a case where UbiSoft quality control let them down.

Apparently, their marketing and legal teams let them down as well.  The original packaging for Fighters Uncaged, players are invited to “Become the ULTIMATE FIGHTING weapon!”.

Uh oh.  No way that’s going to fly with the UFC.

So Zuffa’s legal team contacted UbiSoft and pointed out that “ultimate fighting” is kind of a brand-name sort of thing, and that Zuffa actually owns a trademark on the phrase “ultimate fighting”, and “ultimate fighting” is only done when Zuffa says it is, and unless UbiSoft wanted to get “ultimately fought”, they needed to stop selling the game and retool the packaging.

And according to a press release, UbiSoft collectively threws its hands in the air crying “MERDE!”, then quickly surrendered and agreed to all terms.

No word yet on if the company will actually try to push out more copies of this abomination, but it doesn’t matter because you don’t want it.  Just trust us.  You’re welcome.

Evolution Fighting Championships 7
Summer Bash

Evolution Fighting Championships has been steadily making a name for itself, and is already one of the East Coast’s premier amateur Mixed Martial Arts promotions. Promoter Steven Katz has done an outstanding job of making each event better than the last, and on August 27, at the Rahway Rec Center in Rahway, New Jersey, he’s back with what promises to be the biggest and best card yet.

“We’re still growing,” Katz said. “I’m still growing the company. I worked hard, and we’ll have a full card. We should have 16 bouts cleared prior to the deadline of the fights. We’re gonna have a full card of exciting bouts. I brought some little guys in. Mike Colon vs. Ariel Solano for 126 vacant belt. That fight is going to a barn burner co-main event. In the main event is Ben Syers vs. Caleb Solano. Due to injury that fight was postponed [previously]. Both are training hard and it’s going to be a great main event. It’s a fantastic fight.”

Ben Syers became an overnight Internet sensation when he knocked out Bobby Ascolillo in just 4 seconds to win the Evolution 140 pound title last November. The video of that fight has gone viral and has nearly one hundred thousand hits on YouTube.

“In the past two weeks, the video’s gotten ten thousand hits,” said Katz. “It’s crazy.”

Crazy may be the operative word for what happens in the cage at the Evolution Fighting Championship, but the way Steve Katz runs the promotion is anything but. His shows start on time, all the time, and the crowd always leaves satisfied.

Katz is also the matchmaker for the bouts, and he’s meticulous in how he puts together fights. In addition to the two bouts mentioned above, he’s got some other big fights planned for August 27. “I’m bringing in Westley Chow,” Katz said. “Wes Chow vs. Jay Velasco. They’re fighting actually at 135 pounds, but they’re both 130 pound guys, contenders for 126 pound belt and the 130 pound belt. So Wes Chow and Jay Velasco, even with the card that we have lined up, have the probable makings for Fight of the Night. That’s going to be a fight you don’t want to blink at. We’ve got everything on this card. We’ve got powerhouse wrestlers, good strikers, it’s going to be a great card.”

Katz has a proven track record of putting on great fights, and with these match ups there’s a good chance we’ll see another viral video take the MMA world storm. Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased by calling 718-607-4158. The fights begin at 6:00pm. Doors open at 5:00pm at the Rahway Rec Center, 275 East Milton Avenue, Rahway, New Jersey, 07065. For fans who can’t make it to the venue, the fights will also be broadcast on GoFightLive.tv

It’s no secret that Chael Sonnen and the country of Brazil don’t have the healthiest relationship.

Sonnen has been taking shots at Brazilian fighters since it was announced that he would fight Anderson Silva over a year ago.

For the most part, Sonnen has been keeping his insults directed towards fighters. In particular, he has focused on members of team Blackhouse, home to notable MMA fighters such as Anderson Silva, Jose Aldo, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Junior Dos Santos.

However, leading into UFC 134, Sonnen made some remarks that were directed towards the citizens of Brazil in particular. It now appears that the citizens of Rio De Janeiro, the location of UFC 134, have taken offense.

MMAfighting.com spoke with the UFC fans in Rio, asking for their thoughts on Sonnen.

To say the least, most were not big fans of the UFC middleweight standout.

“He is very ugly. I don’t like Chael Sonnen,” one fan said. This quote is paraphrased; the fan also had some choice Brazilian words for Sonnen. One can assume those words weren’t exactly complimentary.

“Chael Sonnen is an idiot,” another fan remarked, to the approval of all those around him.

The news isn’t all bad for Sonnen, though. There were a few fans on his side.

“I think he only says things just to show off and to play on the media, but I like him,” another fan insisted.

While there are some Brazilians who have not taken Sonnen’s comments personally, the majority of opinions expressed about him were negative. The word “idiot” was a recurring theme and several fans used profanities that were subsequently bleeped.

It appears as though Sonnen has made the right decision by staying home, rather than traveling to Brazil for UFC 134. Needless to say, he would not have received a warm welcome.

Sonnen was originally intending on attending the event to show support for his good friend Yushin Okami, who will be featured in the main event against UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva. Silva’s title will be on the line.

Ultimately, Sonnen decided not to attend the event because he thought his being there would draw too much attention away from Okami, in what should be the biggest night of his career.

Joe Son Convicted on Torture Charge Related to 1990 Gang-Rape, Faces 15 Years to Life

(Why so glum, Joey? Prison is a magical place, just *full* of gang-rape.)

Justice has finally defeated UFC veteran/actor/rapist Joe Son. The thong-clad scumbag‘s gang-rape trial came to an end yesterday, with Son eating a felony conviction that could put him in prison for the rest of his pathetic-ass life. SFGate has the details:

Joseph Hyungmin Son was found guilty of one felony count of torture Thursday. A statute of limitations had expired on other counts. Prosecutors say Son and an accomplice pulled the victim into a car on Christmas Eve in 1990 and drove her toward Huntington Beach as they beat her with a gun and raped her. The investigation had gone cold until Son was required to provide a DNA sample in 2008 in connection with a vandalism sentence. He faces a maximum sentence of 15 years to life in state prison.

Four years after the rape, Son debuted in the UFC as a Bible-thumping nutpunch-magnet. Any guesses on how long he’ll last in prison?
