There was a point in time where MMA fans questioned the UFC’s decision to have Jon Anik take over as the lead play-by-play commentator on the broadcasts, only for him to become an integral part of the promotion.

Anik has been a part of so many incredible moments in the history of the sport but for “Big” John McCarthy, there’s one memory that stands out.

McCarthy and Josh Thomson were joined by the modern-day voice of the UFC on the latest episode of their Weighing In podcast.

During their conversation, the veteran referee wanted to highlight how one piece of work from Anik has always stuck with him since he first heard it.

Anik delivered a tribute to the late Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov following his passing in 2020 which led to his son, Khabib Nurmagomedov, retiring on top of the sport.

Jon Anik Reflects On Tribute For Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, Reveals Whether Anything Tops It

After McCarthy spoke about the level of emotion and heart that the commentator was able to put into this tribute as one of his finest moments on the mic, Anik spoke about the backstory of putting this together.

When asked if there was anything in his career that tops this, he gave another example of a powerful piece of work like the tribute for Nurmagomedov, that he also gives a lot of credit to his producer at the time to.

“Yes, I mean the only thing that even comes close and same producer no longer with the UFC, Mike Ricci now actually working for chess.com, and my daughters along with Daniel Cormier’s daughter got to do an Amanda Nunes essay. So it was those three girls doing it so it had nothing to do with me. I don’t know that anything could top that but man, yes, you’re giving me chills when you reference that poem, ‘a father to his son.’

“I wish I remember what it was but oftentimes when we do an essay for a fighter, I might write it, I might have a ghost writer and then I might edit that script. In this case, it was this poem that was actually picked and I really had to find, and I appreciate you acknowledging the work because I am proud of it. I had to find, sort of a dulcet, melancholy, sad tone that was very, and it was voiced on this exact headset that you’re looking at right now in a hotel room probably like this so finding the right tone and sending that off, hoping that they would put it together in the right way, yes it was special and obviously it was to him [Khabib Nurmagomedov] but Mike Ricci really deserves all the credit.”

Jon Jones

In previously unseen footage released, the late former Sambo specialist and head coach of former UFC lightweight champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov, his father, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov – predicting a dominant run at the heavyweight division for former two-time light heavyweight titleholder, Jon Jones.

Nurmagomedov, the former head coach of his son, former lightweight kingpin, Khabib, passed away amid complications stemming from COVID-19 back in 2019, had guided the Dagestan native to a stunning undefeated professional career in the sport, sharing the corner for his UFC 242 title unification win against Dustin Poirier in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

Successfully unifying the lightweight titles against former interim champion, Justin Gaethje the following year, Khabib, who had lost his father, Abdulmanap in the months leading up to his title fight with the Arizona native, called time on his career with immediate effect off the back of his win over Gaethje in the Middle East.

Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov picked Jon Jones to dominate at heavyweight

With news of the aforenoted, Jones’ expected heavyweight division debut against either champion, Francis Ngannou, or contender, Curtis Blaydes at UFC 285 in March of next year circulating today, footage has surfaced of Abdulmanap predicting a destroyer of worlds entering the heavyweight frey in the form of Jones.

“Jon Jones has a gift of destiny, from God,” Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov said. “Not from Greg Jackson. Greg Jackson is a good striking coach, don’t get me confused, but can he grapple with me? Can he grapple with me in Gi? No. Can I strike with him? No. Everyone has their strong sides. What’s necessary is strategic training regarding the fight as a whole. It consists of seven parts.”

“…Jon Jones, we know, that he is the number one as a fighter,” Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov explained. “Maybe not judging by his behaviour outside the cage with the law and etcetera. But, I am sure he will destroy the heavyweights too. All top 5 heavyweights – maybe about only two of them you can have some doubt (about). But he can destroy anyone in the “heavies”. That’s just my opinion. To say that a particular coaching and a team developed these qualities in him? Well, no.”

In his last Octagon outing, Jones managed to successfully defend his light heavyweight title back in February 2020 against Dominick Reyes in a close, unanimous decision win, before relinquishing the crown in August of that year.

“And today, when i became a champion, I would really like to put this belt on my coach, in the Octagon,” Islam Makhachev continued. “If you were by my side, it would have been a more meaningful victory for me. May the Almighty grant you the highest rank of Paradise coach.” (Translated by Google Translate)

Former UFC lightweight champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov has claimed that ex-Manchester United manager, Sir Alex Ferguson shares certain qualities and a mentality very similar to his late father, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov after meeting the Scottish coach back in October of last year.

Khabib, who officially ended his professional mixed martial arts career back in March of last year, walked away from the sport as the undisputed lightweight champion of the UFC, boasting a 29-0 perfect professional record.

Regarded as one of the greatest mixed martial artists to ever compete professionally, Khabib travelled to Manchester in October of last year to watch Manchester United take on Everton at Old Trafford – recounting his meeting with the aforenoted, Ferguson, who is regarded as the greatest manager in Premier League history.

During the encounter, Khabib also met with former Manchester United and France full-back, Patrice Evra, as well as decorated Olympic gold medalist sprinter, Usain Bolt – describing the incredible energy that filled the room given the quartet’s presence.

However, Khabib Nurmagomedov explained how Ferguson in particular stood out to him during their meeting, comparing the 80-year-old’s views and mentality to his own late father.

“That time I met (Sir Alex) Ferguson, Usain Bolt, and Patrice Evra it’s like – amazing, amazing people, you know,” Khabib Nurmagomedov told Sky Sports. “It was like, small room, Sir Alex Ferguson’s family, friends, myself, Evra, Usain Bolt – like so many energies, you know, inside this small room. It was good, brother, it was very good…”

“We talked about a lot. We talked about team, we talked about energy, we talked about a fighter’s mentality – fighters and (football) players, how he deals with this,” Khabib Nurmagomedov explained. “He’s like from old school, and my father was from old school. And his mentality is very close to me, and I was talking with him – it was very fun, honestly. I love to see people, who become success, talk with them about, ‘How? Why? For what?’… I love to learn from people who become success, it doesn’t matter, on any other sport. I feel like everywhere you have same mentality, when you fighting, you play football, you play like basketball. If you strong on your mental, you can become champion. No matter how many injuries you get, if your mental is not broke, you can become champion.”

Conor McGregor Takes Shot At Khabib Nurmagomdeov’s Father On Social Media

Conor McGregor

Conor McGregor has been crossing every line possible with his trash talk as of late.

The Irishman received backlash in the build-up to his UFC 264 trilogy fight with Dustin Poirier for stepping over the line by bringing the former interim lightweight champions family into the debate.

‘Notorious’ continued to trash talk Poirier and his wife, Jolie, after suffering a broken leg in the UFC 264 main event on July 10.

Khabib Nurmagomedov was quick to congratulate ‘The Diamond’ on his big win at the time.

“Good always defeats evil,” Nurmagomedov wrote on social media. “Very happy for @DustinPoirier I hope you will get the belt end of the year”

Almost three weeks later, McGregor has decided to respond to Nurmagomedov’s comment and took a seriously low blow while doing so.

“Covid is good and father is evil?” McGregor replied.

Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov died in July 2020 after several months of battling health complications brought on by the coronavirus. The 57-year-old first fell ill in April with pneumonia-like symptoms, but COVID-19 was not confirmed. The renowned MMA coach told the media he was feeling fine after his health scare but then his condition quickly deteriorated. Nurmagomedov was sent to a Russian military hospital for further treatment, it was there he tested positive for the coronavirus before suffering a heart attack brought on by the disease. Nurmagomedov was placed in a medically induced coma and did come out of it before passing away.

The death of his father had a profound effect on Khabib who announced his retirement from MMA after beating Justin Gaethje at UFC 254.

“This was my last fight,” Nurmagomedov told Jon Anik post-fight at UFC 254. “After what happened with my father, when the UFC called me about Justin, I talked with my mother for three days. She don’t want me to fight without [my] father, but I promised her it’s gonna be my last fight. And if I give my word, I have to follow this. It was my last fight here.

Nurmagomedov is yet to reply to McGregor’s low blow.

Do you think the UFC should punish Conor McGregor for repeatably crossing the line with his trash talk?

Nurmagomedov

It has now been one year since Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov passed away.

The father of former UFC lightweight champion Khabib passed away at the age of 57 on July 3, 2020 after complications stemming from COVID-19.

It was a hard time not only for the Nurmagomedovs and everyone in Dagestan, but the entire mixed martial arts community given the influence Abdulmanap had on one of the greatest fighters of all time and his son in Khabib.

One year on, and Nurmagomedov reflected on his father’s passing on Instagram.

“It’s been a year today since the Father is gone,” Khabib wrote on Instagram. “This event has increased my belief that in this world we own nothing, not out children, not our parents, not our property. Everything we have is temporary.

“All things belong to Allah alone and to Him we shall return, tie your hearts to Allah, stay more alone with Him, for a time will come when we will all be put in the grave where we will be alone, where our friends, relatives, property and connections will not be there, only our deeds and report.”

Nurmagomedov would compete one last time afterward when he defeated Justin Gaethje via second-round submission to defend his lightweight title at UFC 254 back in October.

He would retire soon after as he revealed he had promised his mother that he would no longer compete. And it looks like it will remain that way despite the efforts of many.
