The first event of ONE Championship’s deal with Amazon Prime Video is set to be headlined by a blockbuster rematch between Adriano Moraes and Demetrious Johnson.

Earlier this year, Asia’s biggest martial arts organization announced a multi-year agreement for the exclusive coverage of its events in the United States and Canada, with streaming giant Amazon Prime Video acquiring the rights.

And what better way to start the partnership than with a crucial contest featuring one of not only America’s best mixed martial artists, but one of the greatest MMA fighters of all time.

In the main event of ONE 161, set for the Singapore Indoor Stadium on August 26, “Mighty Mouse” Johnson (30-4-1) will have the chance to avenge the one and only knockout loss of his career to date. The defeat came at the hands of ONE Flyweight Champion Moraes, who has held the 135-pound gold on three separate occasions.

After exiting the UFC for ONE following a narrow loss to Henry Cejudo in 2018, Johnson won his opening three fights in the Circle, which came as part of the flyweight Grand Prix. Having earned the silver belt with victory over the Philippines’ Danny Kingad in the final, the MMA great set up a showdown with Moraes (20-3) at ONE on TNT 1.

In one of the most memorable moments of 2021, Moraes added a fourth defeat to Johnson’s record, and the first to have not required the scorecards. He did so by knocking the Kentucky native out with a grounded knee, which is legal in ONE but not under the Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts, which is adopted by the UFC.

Since the April 2021 contest, the pair have competed once each, both at ONE Championship’s 10-year anniversary event earlier this year. While the Brazilian champion defended his gold against Yuya Wakamatsu, “Mighty Mouse” secured victory over elite Muay Thai practitioner Rodtang Jitmuangnon in a unique mixed-rules contest.

On Friday, following an initial report from Ariel Helwani, the promotion confirmed that the pair’s next steps will see their paths cross again, in what Chatri Sityodtong and ONE hope will be a rematch big enough to attract a healthy audience for the opening event of the Amazon partnership.

While the event is set for Singapore, it’s expect to be be broadcast live in US primetime, similar to the Asia-held UFC 275 next weekend.

Who do you think will have their hand raised in the ONE 161 main event, Adriano Moraes or Demetrious Johnson?

Off the back of his second round special rules submission win over striking sensation, Rodtang Jitmuangnon at ONE Championship X in March, former UFC flyweight champion and ONE Championship Grand Prix victor, Demetrious Johnson will land a rematch against current division titleholder, Adriano Moraes at an August 26. event.

Demetrious Johnson, who featured against Moraes in the main event of ONE on TNT 1 back in April of last year, unsuccessfully attempted to pry the flyweight crown from the Brazilian suffering the first loss of his tenure with the organization, courtesy of a second round knee knockout loss. The KO stoppage came as the first time Johnson had been finished in professional mixed martial arts.

Demetrious Johnson previously landed the ONE Flyweight World Grand Prix victory

For Moraes, the Brasilia standout managed to further cement his dominance at flyweight following his knockout win over Johnson, submitting common-foe, Yuya Wakamatsu with a third round guillotine win at ONE X in March of this year. Moraes currently boasts a 20-3 professional record.

Ariel Helwani was first to report the news of Johnson’s title rematch against Moraes on his official Substack page, noting how the pairing is expected to be officially confirmed by the promotion at their upcoming ONE Championship 158 event. The August event will come as ONE Championship’s first on Amazon Prime Video.

Before his loss to Moraes, Demetrious Johnson, who holds the most consecutive successful title defenses in the history of the UFC with a whopping 11 straight title knockbacks, had enjoyed a run of three consecutive wins since his move to the Chatri Sityodtong-led banner.

Debuting with a guillotine win of his own against the aforenoted, Wakamatsu – Johnson would then land a pair of unanimous decision successes against both Tatsumitsu Wada, and then Danny Kingad – the most recent of which landed him the ONE Championship Flyweight Grand Prix spoils.

A three-time ONE Championship flyweight champion, Moraes holds 10 separate submission wins to go with a further four knockout wins. Amongst his winning résumé – the 33-year-old has defeated Kairat Akhmetov, common-foe, Danny Kingad, and avenged a split decision loss to Geje Eustaquio.

Talent managers Alex Davis and Samir Nadaf have reportedly filed a lawsuit against ONE Championship fighter Adriano Moraes.

The lawsuit alleges Moraes owes the managers over $100,000 due to a breach of contract.

The issue stems from a claim that Moraes wasn’t paying the managers an agreed-upon amount of his income. News of the filing was first reported by Guilherme Cruz of MMA Fighting.

Details obtained by MMA Fighting allege that Moraes was giving his management less than what he agreed to give them as part of a deal. The managers claim he agreed to pay them 10 percent of fight purses and 20 percent of his money from sponsorships, but they say he only gave them 5 percent for his last two outings.

Managers Allege They Are Owed $35,000 For Fight Against Johnson

Davis and Nadaf are reportedly seeking $113,000 in total.

Moraes pulled off a big win earlier this year, stopping former UFC Flyweight Champion Demetrious Johnson with strikes. Documents filed in the lawsuit claim that Moraes was given $50,000 to show for that fight, along with another $50,000 for winning. He was also allegedly given an extra $250,000 as a bonus afterward.

Davis and Nadaf claim they were owed $35,000 for the fight weekend but only received $2,500 from Moraes.

“As a professional rule, I don’t make comments about contracts, money and etc publicly,” said Davis when requested for comment by MMA Fighting. “I seek the justice when I’m in need about any situation, and I’ll wait and humbly agree to its decision.”

Moraes started his third run as the ONE 135-pound Champion in early 2019. In that fight, he avenged a loss he previously took against Geje Eustaquio. Moraes has fought on the ONE Championship roster since 2013.

John Lineker would be more than willing to fight Demetrious Johnson in the future.

Both fighters never competed during their time in the UFC flyweight division. But with the pair now at ONE Championship, a meeting is certainly possible even if Lineker fights one weight class above him at bantamweight.

For now, there is no word on what Johnson will do next as he is coming off a knockout defeat to Adriano Moraes in their flyweight title fight earlier this year.

That result didn’t really surprise Lineker as he trains with Moraes at American Top Team, and he believes a fight between himself and “Mighty Mouse” would be a great one.

“For me, it would be a great fight,” John Lineker told BJPenn.com. “I’m here to fight so if they tell me to fight Demetrious Johnson, I’m ready.

“I’m not surprised because I know Adriano. He’s my friend, he’s my training partner, we train together at American Top Team so I knew that he could win against Demetrious Johnson. I knew he could beat him, he’s a great fighter.”

John Lineker Challenging For Title Next

Of course, Lineker is challenging for the bantamweight title next which is currently held by Bibiano Fernandes. Fernandes happens to be a training partner of Johnson’s and this fact was not lost on Lineker.

“It’s funny because he’s training with Bibiano [Fernandes] and I’m training with Adriano so let’s see who the best team is as I’m gonna fight Bibiano and we’re gonna see,” he added.

If Lineker were to become the next ONE bantamweight champion, perhaps he could defend his belt against Johnson next or move down for a flyweight super fight.

Who do you think would win between Demetrious Johnson and John Lineker?

Adriano Moraes is down for a rematch with Demetrius Johnson, but it’s not the only fight that interests him.

The MMA world was shocked last week, as Moraes, the One Championship Featherweight Champion, finished Demetrius “Mighty Mouse” Johnson in the second round of their title fight. The first man to ever stop Johnson, Moraes believes that he has multiple options as far as his next opponent.

In an interview with LowKickMMA, Moraes talked about a rematch with Johnson and other fights that interest him.

“Right now I’m waiting for the answer from the company. We have some issues to resolve because it was my last fight for my contract. Let’s see what’s gonna happen,” Moraes shared. “Maybe you can do a rematch, Moraes versus Johnson 2. I’m also looking forward to a trilogy match with Kairat Akhmetov.”

There’s no shortage of challenges for the champ, who understands the enormity of having new sets of eyes on him now that One Championship is on TNT. With his status currently in limbo with the organization, Moraes opened up about other matchups in the UFC and Bellator that he would find challenging.

“Figueiredo’s gonna be a good fight, you know, in the flyweight division. Aljamain Sterling, um, I would like to, to punch him in the face also. Um, I think those two guys gonna be good in their divisions. You have the Bellator champ Archuleta, the 135 champion, it’s gonna be good.”

When asked to elaborate on why he’d like to fight Sterling, Moraes made it clear that there are no personal issues between the two.

“No, I don’t have nothing against him, you know. I like, I think it would be a good match, you know. I like to challenge myself. I don’t, like, worry about what they think. But, um, I think it would be a good one. You know like, he has a good reach also he’s heavy for the Bantamweight division. He’s tough,he has many good wins against my teammates. I think it would be a good one.”
