Conor McGregor has shockingly called for a fight with Al Iaquinta ahead of his headline bout opposite Dustin Poirier at UFC 257.

‘Raging Al’ is a strange call out considering he has lost three of his last four fights. The 33-year-old hasn’t fought since dropping to consecutive decision defeats against Dan Hooker and Donald Cerrone in 2019. Despite that, he remains in the UFC rankings and currently sits at #10 at lightweight.

McGregor and Poirier have been respectful of each other throughout the build-up to their rematch. It is a big change from when the pair first met at UFC 178 in 2014.

Iaquinta was vocal about not liking the budding friendship between McGregor and Poirier when the UFC 257 main event was booked. The outspoken New Yorker claimed Poirier had already lost the fight due to his attitude towards his opponent.

In a recent interview with Ariel Helwani, McGregor was asked about the differing build-up ahead of the rematch and Iaquinta’s past comments. ‘Notorious’ surprised the veteran reporter when he interrupted to call for a fight with Iaquinta.

“I’d like to fight Al Iaquinta at some stage,” McGregor said. “I’d like to fight Al. I don’t know I’d just like to fight him. I’d like to fight Al. He’s said a few things. I actually like Al. I think he’s a funny guy. He’s a real estate agent and all. I think that’s even funny in itself. He has his little team (Ray) Longo and those guys. I’d like to fight Al.

It may seem a strange call out to many but McGregor insists win and losses do not matter because he wants to fight everyone.

“I’d like to fight them all to be honest. I don’t care,” McGregor said. “This is the thing with me and all these other guys. Wins and losses and all this, it means nothing to me. If you’re scheduled to fight a man and you’ve gone through build-up and there’s history and all of this. A fight is a fight and fights must take place.”

‘Notorious’ later addressed why he and Poirier have been more respectful of each other ahead of UFC 257, he said.

“As far as this one being a lot more respectful. We’re more mature myself and Dustin. We’re both fathers and we have come through a lot. We are both engaged and make much philanthropic efforts. He is doing a great thing with The Good Fight Foundation. How could I not respect Dustin? One for that and two for how he handled the last loss. How he came back and rose up to become a champion. That’s admirable in my book and I’m very excited to get in an compete with him.”

Do you think Conor McGregor will ever fight Al Iaquinta?

Al Iaquinta Rips ‘Cringey’ Poirier For Cordial McGregor Negotiations

Former lightweight title challenger Al Iaquinta has blasted Dustin Poirier for his handling of the ongoing negotiations for an eagerly-anticipated rematch with UFC superstar Conor McGregor.

Poirier and McGregor have verbally agreed to rematch on January 23, 2021. Prior to that both men also agreed to fight for charity, without UFC involvement. ‘Notorious’ even offer to donate $500,000 to Poirier’s charity, The Good Fight Foundation, and to fly ‘The Diamond’ out to Ireland for the exhibition bout.

Iaquinta told ESPN that Poirier has shown weakness ahead of his rematch against McGregor and for that reason says there’s no way the former interim champion will beat McGregor when they finally fight for a second time.

“What is that guy doing?” Iaquinta asked. “What is he, Conor’s fan? He’s like a fan fighting Conor. It’s so cringey. Conor’s like, ‘I’ll fly you over, and I’ll donate my money to your charity.’ I’d be like, ‘Bro, I’ll fly my (expletive) self over and when I beat the (expletive) out of you, I’ll donate my own money. What is this? Kumbaya? Like what the hell. Are you kidding? He’s lost the fight already.

“If the fight happens, there’s not a doubt in my mind Dustin’s losing that fight. He’s already (conceded) in everything. He’s like, ‘Thank you for the fight. We’ll fight in Ireland or wherever, and thank you, we’ll fight for charity, it’ll be great.’ It’s like, dude, get out of here. This is a fight. What? Are you freakin’ kidding me? You’re gonna thank the guy? You think Conor is really gonna – this is for him, this is not for you, Dustin. Relax, bro.” (Transcribed by MMA Junkie)

Iaquinta has been out of the Octagon for more than a year. The straight-talking New Yorker is currently on a two-fight losing skid after suffering decision defeats to Dan Hooker and Donald Cerrone. Prior to that, he eased by Kevin Lee to rebound from his short-notice lightweight title fight loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 223.

Do you agree with Al Iaquinta? Has Dustin Poirier shown weakness during negotiations for a fight with Conor McGregor?

Arman Tsarukyan is now targeting the ranked lightweights.

Tsarukyan is coming off an impressive performance in his unanimous decision win over Davi Ramos at UFC Fight Island 2 last night.

The 23-year-old was certainly pleased with his performance, especially as he notably became the first person to take Ramos down in the UFC.

“This was a great fight for me because Davi Ramos is a very strong opponent,” he said post-fight (via MMA Junkie). “He is one of the stronger grapplers in the world. … I’m a very young fighter, every day I will get better and better. I can destroy my whole division.”

Tsarukyan Wants Iaquinta Next

The win puts him at 2-1 with the UFC with his only setback coming in his debut last year.

On that occasion, he faced the mighty task of defeating Islam Makhachev and although he suffered a unanimous decision loss, it was still a very competitive, grappling affair.

And now, Tsarukyan wants to test his grappling against someone who faced arguably the best grappler in the sport today in Khabib Nurmagomedov. And that is Al Iaquinta.

“Next fight, I want to fight with top 15, top 10 guys – maybe (Al) Iaquinta because he is a very strong guy and he fought with Khabib Nurmagomedov,” Tsarukyan added. “I want to fight with him because it’s a good fight for me.”

Iaquinta stepped in on short notice to face Nurmagomedov for the lightweight title back in April 2018. Although he had a very few moments of success, he was ultimately dominated by the current champion.

The New Yorker is currently on a two-fight losing streak so it would make some sense for him to face an unranked opponent. However, it is still unlikely as he will undoubtedly look to climb back up the rankings as soon as possible by facing another ranked opponent.

Iaquinta Lee

It appears Al Iaquinta and Kevin Lee’s rivalry is still alive and well.

Lee suffered a third-round submission defeat to Charles Oliveira in the UFC Brasilia main event last night. Lee notably held on to Oliveira after tapping and appeared to deny that he tapped as well which drew ridicule from many in the combat sport world, including Jorge Masvidal.

Having suffered his third loss in his last four outings, Lee revealed afterwards that it may be some time before fans get to see him back in action.

Iaquinta took the opportunity to let his thoughts be known on that decision.

“Thank god,” he tweeted.

As fans responded to Iaquinta, he continued to mock Lee, particularly for missing weight:

“Riiiight?! Talks a big game, misses weight then disrespects his own Tap!!! Such a fake person.”

“Miss weight then act like you didn’t tap he should quit forever this ain’t for him… fake as fake gets.”

“He ain’t a fighter he’s a phony.”

Although Iaquinta is currently on a two-fight losing streak, he has defeated Lee twice in the UFC with their most recent outing back in December 2018.

And given these tweets, it seems they still don’t see eye-to-eye.

What do you make of Iaquinta’s response?
