It was a pretty unique weekend for Al Iaquinta of the UFC.

After a protracted negotiation with the promotion over pay he deemed unsatisfactory, one that ended up with him banned from receiving fight night bonuses and sitting on the sidelines for two years in protest, “Raging” Al came back to the cage with a vengeance.

He obliterated grizzled veteran Diego Sanchez with a stylish series of right hands to secure the seventh knockout win of his career, but the fun was really only starting at that point.

In his MMA absence, Iaquinta has taken up real estate sales in his native New York. Still unhappy with his pay from the UFC, the pride of Long Island took the opportunity of his post-fight interview to draw attention to the business that’s providing some real cake for him: selling homes.

The move probably didn’t sit that well with UFC executives, who insist athletes are appropriately remunerated for parting with brain cells in the octagon every weekend and would surely cringe at an athlete pimping his real estate brand on live television during one of their events.

But it gets better. Or worse, depending on your perspective.

Soured that he was still banned from winning a bonus and probably sour with the UFC in general, Iaquinta elected to avoid any semblance of a high road once he left the arena. The lightweight took to Twitter to give the UFC some sass from his hotel as well, firing off some expletives before suggesting he may wreck his hotel room just for something to do (warning: tweets contain NSFW language):

The whole saga was highly entertaining and part of a general theme that seems to be emerging with Iaquinta, who has become one of the more entertaining guys on the roster due to his fighting style and his outspokenness outside the cage.

Here’s hoping the whole thing gets resolved in the near future so the sport can enjoy one of the world’s best 155ers more regularly, both inside the cage and out.

UFC Fight Night 108 in Nashville provided quite a bit of action and quite a few interesting results.

Artem Lobov proved many doubters wrong by hanging with one of the featherweight elite for 25 minutes. It was a losing effort, but Lobov’s stock undoubtedly rose after the performance.

What’s next for Conor McGregor’s training partner? What about Cub Swanson, who failed to put away an unranked fighter in a main event spot?

Al Iaquinta knocked Diego Sanchez out in the first round of their co-main event contest. Iaquinta’s return from a two-year absence thrust him right back into the hunt at 155 pounds. Sanchez now has to come to grips with his inability to compete with the top lightweights in the world.

Twenty-six fighters in total hit the cage Saturday, but what’s next?

Here’s your look at the matches the UFC should book for the winners and losers after UFC Fight Night 108.

Al Iaquinta Unhappy With Contract, Goes Off On UFC

UFC lightweight Al Iaquinta was out of action for two years and was scratching to compete again. He got his wish when he faced Diego Sanchez at Saturday’s UFC Fight Night 108 event. However, it was short-lived returned as he won the fight by first-round knockout. Iaquinta is not sure he wants to pick up where he left off in his career at least at his current rate of pay.

“I really enjoy selling real estate,” Iaquinta told MMAjunkie. “I just wanted to get in there and have fun, and that’s exactly what I did. (UFC on FOX 25) would be awesome, something I’d really love to do, but I’m not going to do for the contract I have now. Probably not. Definitely not for a top opponent.

“These guys are dangerous. I’m not going in there to get paid what I’m getting paid to get hurt. If I’m out for two years, where am I going to make any money?”

Soon after his interview, Iaquinta went off on the UFC on Twitter. It appears that it seemed to stem from is the lack of an official UFC fight-night bonus.

Iaquinta is tempted by the thought of fighting at the upcoming UFC on FOX 25 card at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, N.Y. But he still thinks he’s not getting enough compensation to justify the risk.

“I don’t know if the money’s worth everything I go through to do this,” said Iaquinta, who called for a new contract after his win. It worked out tonight, but it’s not going to be that easy. There’s a lot of years lost that I’m not making any money, and I’m not making sponsorship, and I’m in the video game, and I haven’t gotten a dollar for it.”

For beating Sanchez, Iaquinta indicated he made $26,000 to show, so he’ll presumably take home another $26,000 as a win bonus for the big win. According to Iaquinta, that won’t be enough to keep him around for good.

UFC Fight Night 108 went down tonight (Saturday, April 22, 2017) from the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, TN. In a puzzling main event, #4 ranked Cub Swanson duked it out with unranked Conor McGregor training partner Artem Lobov. It turned out to be much more competitive than anticipated.

Swanson swept the scorecards, but Lobov seemed to take round one (and did on two judges’ cards). His chin, leg and body kicks, and solid counter-punching kept him in the fight from start to finish. Lobov even landed a first-round takedown. But Swanson commanded most of the rest of 25-minute affair. His striking diversity and the occasional trip or hip toss from the clinch paid dividends. Swanson would take Lobov’s back and threaten with chokes on a couple of occasions.

The co-main saw the return of Al Iaquinta after more than two years on the sidelines. He took on the grizzled vet of all grizzled vets, Diego Sanchez. Unfortunately, for Sanchez, his fabled chin seems to finally be failing him.

Iaquinta dropped Sanchez with a blistering right inside the first 90 seconds. Sanchez seemed to recover, baring his teeth in his trademark mean mug. But “Ragin’ Al” countered him with another right hand moments later that sent a slumped over and unconscious Sanchez to the floor, forcing referee “Big” John McCarthy to rush in to save “Lionheart” from further punishment.

Here’s how MMA Twitter reacted to these two action-packed bouts:
