UFC lightweight Michael Johnson hadn’t won a fight in nearly four years, and he snapped the skid in an incredible fashion at UFC Vegas 54.

Johnson and Alan Patrick traded blows on the feet in the opening round, with both fighters getting hurt by big strikes. Johnson closed the show in Round 2 with a blitz on the feet combined with violent ground-and-pound combinations.

Check out Johnson’s emphatic return below.

Johnson had struggled mightily over his last few performances, losing finishes to Josh Emmett and Thiago Moisés during stints at featherweight and lightweight. Johnson’s knockout of Patrick was his first since finishing former lightweight title challenger Dustin Poirier in Sept. 2016.

MMA Twitter was ecstatic to watch the veteran Johnson get back in the win column.

Johnson has competed against some of the top lightweights in UFC history, including Khabib Nurmagomedov and Justin Gaethje. He’s also picked up wins over the likes of Edson Barboza, Tony Ferguson, and Gleison Tibau during his UFC tenure.

At 35 years old, Johnson has plenty of time to get back on track in his MMA career and potentially move closer to the lightweight rankings.

Do you think Michael Johnson can return to being a top lightweight contender?

Back with a proverbial bang on the preliminary card of UFC Vegas 54, lightweight division veteran, Michael Johnson managed to return to the winning track with a slick second round combination to stop and drop Brazil’s, Alan Patrick.

Johnson, who had been without a victory since a 2018 decision win over Artem Lobov, snapped his four-fight losing skid with a second round knockout win over Patrick — who was cornered by former undisputed lightweight champion, Charles Oliveira.

Landing a series of strikes during a second round exchange, Johnson, who was once revealed as one of the slicker strikers at 155lb limit, dropped Patrick and followed up with a couple of ground strikes to stop the Brazilian.

Johnson, a native of St. Louis, holds other prior eye-catching wins over the likes of Tony Ferguson, Joe Lauzon, Gleison Tibau, Melvin Guillard, Edson Barboza, and Dustin Poirier to name a few.

EXCLUSIVE | Mason Jones ‘Irritated’ By Alan Patrick No-Contest, Vows To KO Him In Rematch

Mason Jones made his UFC debut in January against Mike Davis. ‘The Dragon’ gave as good as he got over the three-round fight but ultimately walked away with a unanimous decision loss which was his first taste of defeat in MMA.

The former dual-weight Cage Warriors was itching to get back in the win column and establish himself as a potential lightweight contender when he squared off against Alan Patrick back in June. Jones appeared to be on the verge of doing just that before an accidental eye-poke brought an inconclusive end to the fight.

Ahead of his rematch with Patrick next month, Jones vented to LowKickMMA about his frustrating first year in MMA’s premier promotion.

“Irritated,” Jones replied when asked to reflect on his fight with Patrick on Tuesday. “I hit my flow really quick. I felt amazing warming up and I felt amazing when we settled in (to the fight).”

The Welshman is of the belief that he “broke” his opponent in the first round and he was on the verge of a clean stoppage victory before the fight came to an unfortunate end.

“I was really gonna start unloading my combos and really start putting the pressure on,” Jones explained. “And then, obviously, the accidental eye-poke ended the fight. It irritated me because he had no intention of continuing on.”

Jones believes Patrick milked the eye-poke because he “didn’t want to be in the fight.”

“I just don’t think it was as bad as he made it out to be,” Jones said. “He was instantly (saying) ‘Oh, it’s blurry. I can’t see. I can’t continue.’ He just didn’t want to be in the fight. I controlled it all the way through. Whether he felt terrible, or I just felt really good, he just sort of decided to cut his losses and leave. For me, that’s completely alien, like, you just fight through to the last.

On October 23, Mason Jones is ready to get his long-overdue win against Patrick.

“The second or third (round),” Jones said when asked to predict how he’ll get the win against Patrick. ”Last time, I said the second round. It was more than available for me to stop him. Like I said, we were 18 seconds from the midway point (of the fight) and he was already broken. So, I could’ve stopped that in the second.”

“I’m not going to come out and just start swinging for the rafters and treating Alan like he’s a bum because Alan is a very good, high-level opponent,” Jones added. “Like, I’m not underestimating him. I’m looking at this fight as him underestimating me the last time so this fight he’s going to be stronger, he’s going to be fitter, and this fight he’s going to be a lot more dangerous. That’s the best way to look at it. I’m going to prepare for a stronger and faster Alan Patrick and it’s going to go the same way. I’m going to pick him up with my shots coming in. I’m going to hit him with some stiffs shots and I’m going to rock him and then I’m going to knock him out with a nice combo.”

Do you think Mason Jones will get his first UFC win when he rematches Alan Patrick on October 23?

Gross Injury of the Day: Alan Patrick Pulls Out of UFC 179 Due to Horrifying Fractured Jaw

Undefeated Brazilian lightweight Alan Patrick has withdrawn from his UFC 179 matchup with Beneil Dariush due to a fractured jaw suffered in training. Patrick sustained the injury last Thursday while sparring at X-Gym in Rio de Janeiro. As he told Sherdog:

I was training and was hit by a knee. I was using a mouthguard, but it hit the bottom of my mouth. I have never been hit by such a knee before. It went right into my chin. Now, I will have to put a titanium plate on my chin. If I wasn’t going to be hit anymore, I wouldn’t have to do it, but as a fighter, I have to be cautious…In about a month, I’ll be able to resume doing cardio, and after another month, I’ll resume with the soft-contact training. I expect to fight in December.”

We have placed a photo of Patrick’s injury after the jump, because honestly, it’s too gross to leave on the homepage. Brace yourself…

Yep, that’s horrible. According to Patrick’s dentist, Dr. Mariana Barros:

It was an incomplete fracture of the jaw, which means only the inside bone, which holds the teeth, has broken,” Barros said. “Immediately, we were able to put it back and contain it, but the next step is to undergo surgery so we can put in a plate and make his bone stronger, so he won’t have any future problems.”

Get well soon, Alan.
