Former interim UFC champion Carlos Condit nearly had a much-needed victory in his short notice co-main event bout with Alex “Cowboy” Oliveira at last Saturday night’s UFC on FOX 29.

However, as can happen in mixed martial arts (MMA), “The Natural Born Killer” saw victory slip from his grasp and turn to defeat in the second round when a vicious upkick from the Brazilian ‘Cowboy’ shifted the bout’s momentum and opened the doorway for a fight-ending guillotine choke from Oliveira.

Instead of a rebound win, Condit was left pondering his MMA future following a four-fight skid.

Once arguably the sport’s most dependable finisher, he’s not scored a stoppage since his win over similarly fading Thiago Alves in 2015 and had even contemplated retirement following his submission loss to Demian Maia after a narrowly failed title bout versus then-champ Robbie Lawler that January.

For a fighter like the “Natural Born Killer,” getting choked out was not a usual occurrence, and he recently reacted to the brutal loss in an emotionally honest assessment of the defeat and current status on his official Instagram page:

“Post choke out, where the fuck am I , WTF happened, feeling kinda warm and fuzzy , hope I didn’t just piss my shorts on live TV , thousand yard stare. I’ve posted plenty of pictures looking like a Badass. Triumphant and powerful… But here’s the flip side, crumpled and weak in defeat. Rough day at the office ?

Fuck it though, I had fun. I trained my ass off and I came to fight. This is what leaving it all out there looked like on Saturday. Much respect to my opponent and his team. Thank you for taking the fight on short notice. Congratulations and best of luck in the future.

I don’t know what’s next guys… I still love this game, and most days I still feel that fire, I absolutely love what it do, but maybe my time has passed. I don’t know the answer. this is what I know, this is my passion. I will never stop training, and If that leads me back to the the octagon, you know I’ll try to make it bloody for ya.

Right now I’m looking forward to summer shenanigans with my sons and to expanding @hundredhandscoffee .”

Condit’s head and heart seem to be halfway in the fighting game and halfway out, a tough spot to be in for any pro athlete, especially one whose downfall leads to the massive amount of physical damage as that of an elite MMA fighter.

It simply cannot be denied that he’s one of the most beloved, old-school fighters for his sheer willingness to throw down in some of the best fights the UFC and WEC have ever seen, and his commitment to the fight game also should never go unnoticed.

If that’s waning now after his decorated career and mounting defeats, well, we simply couldn’t blame him for stepping down if he feels the time is right.

Do you believe one of the UFC’s best-ever welterweights should call it a day in MMA?

In the co-main event of last night’s (April 14, 2018) UFC on FOX 29 from Glendale, Arizona, Alex Oliveira made the most of a short-notice opportunity, submitting Carlos Condit in the second round of a bout he accepted just a few weeks ago.

And although Condit tapped, Oliveira claims that “The Natural Born Killer” was unconscious for a few seconds:

“Yeah, he went to sleep, and I changed grips on him, and he woke up, and I had to finish it, so I went and tightened it again,” Oliveira told MMAjunkie. “And then he tapped.”

Condit certainly displayed incredible toughness, however, as he attempted to fight off the choke, bur “Cowboy” knew all he had to do was be patient and take his time:

“Yeah, if I stopped and the judges didn’t give me the victory, I had to put on the pressure,” he said.

This win could quite possibly be the biggest of Oliveira’s career and the Brazilian has now won five of his last seven fights. However, it’s interesting to note that the circumstances surrounding the fight weren’t exactly ideal for Oliveira.

Not only did he accept the fight on short notice, but “Cowboy” was dealing with some personal issues as well:

“One of my aunts died as soon I got here,” he said. “My uncle’s in the hospital. I don’t even know how he is, but you know, I had to come and fight.”

Regardless, he got the job done and he now appears to be focused solely on the next task at hand:

“A week of rest, and then I’ll start training again, and I’ll be … training for the next one,” he said.

In the co-main event of UFC on FOX 29 earlier tonight (Sat. April 14, 2018) from Glendale, Arizona, former interim UFC welterweight champion Carlos Condit returned to the Octagon to take on Alex Oliveira.

Condit came into the bout on a disappointing three-fight losing streak. His last appearance inside the cage saw him drop a unanimous decision to Neil Magny in Las Vegas this past December. If Condit wanted any shot at returning to the 170-pound title picture, he needed to get past his Brazilian counterpart first.

Oliveira’s last Octagon appearance also came this past December. The Brazilian had his four-fight win streak snapped when he was knocked out by Yancy Medeiros in the third round of their Fight Of The Night in Detroit. A win over a former welterweight champion in Condit would do big things for Oliveira’s resume.

Condit and Oliveira had some interesting exchanges on the ground before the Brazilian was able to cut his opposition open with an elbow. Oliveira then locked in a guillotine choke standing up, and after taking it to the ground Condit was forced to tap.

UFC on FOX 29 emanated tonight (Saturday, April 14, 2018) from the Gila River Arena in Glendale, AZ and was headlined by a lightweight slugfest between Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje. As expected, the two engaged in a Fight of the Year contender until Poirier stopped Gaethje on fourth-round punches. “The Highlight” relentlessly pressured Poirier but often found himself on the receiving end of a multi-punch salvo. Poirier followed the blueprint set by Eddie Alvarez, working in copious body shots to the relentless Coloradan. Gaethje seemed to turn the tide in the third, where his relentless leg kicks slowed and staggered Poirier. But a straight left hand wobbled Gaethje in the fourth, and Poirier refused to let him off the hook. Both men left $50,000 richer for their efforts and with the eternal respect of the audience.

For his guillotine-choke finish of Carlos Condit, Alex Oliveira earned one of the two Performance of the Night bonuses. Condit held his own throughout their abbreviated contest, but “Cowboy” ultimately proved too physical. After Condit secured a takedown in the second – the pair went takedown-for-takedown all fight – Oliveira landed a gnarly upkick that seemed to change the complexion of the fight. Oliveira was able to scramble to his feet, and as Condit sought to reestablish top position, Oliveira snagged the guillotine. It took nearly 30 seconds of squeezing and adjusting, but he eventually forced the “Natural Born Killer” to tap out. Oliveira will leave Glendale $50,000 richer for his performance.

The other Performance of the Night went to undercard heavyweight Adam Wieczorek, who became just the second person ever to finish a fight by omaplata submission. Taken down several times by the grappling-minded Arjan Bhullar, Wieczorek never stopped trying to climb his guard up. In the second, he was able to gain the angle he needed, trapped Bhullar’s left arm, and sat up into the omaplata. He secured Bhullar’s hips with a seatbelt grip and forced his head to the mat. The tap came moments later. With that, Wieczorek joined Ben Saunders as the only fighters to stop a fight via omaplata in the UFC.

UFC on FOX 29 went down tonight (Saturday, April 14, 2018) from the Gila River Arena in Glendale, AZ. The main event was a hotly anticipated barnburner between Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje. Unsurprisingly, the two engaged in a high-paced, hyper-violent Fight of the Year contender. Poirier surged out to an early lead behind relentless volume in the first two rounds, but Gaethje made his case for a comeback in third. His leg kicks and pace seemed to be getting to the Louisianan. But Poirier landed a huge straight left early in round four that put Gaethje on wobbly legs, and follow-up punches compromised him. Poirier emerged from the brawl with a hard-earned fourth-round TKO victory.

The co-headliner saw fan favorite Carlos Condit return against late replacement Alex “Cowboy” Oliveira. Oliveira proved to be too much physically for Condit. The “Natural Born Killer” had his moments both standing and on the ground through the first round and a half. But an upkick from a downed Oliveira hurt Condit, allowing the Brazilian to once again establish dominant position. This time, he latched onto Condit’s neck, forced him to the mat, and after an extended struggle, forced him to tap.
