Valentina Shevchenko warns Alexa Grasso ahead of Noche UFC mistake won't happen ever again

Former undisputed flyweight champion, Valentina Shevchenko is firmly gearing up for her Octagon return later this month in the main event of Noche UFC – and claims Alexa Grasso is not destined to echo history and land a submission win, claiming such a stoppage “will not happen ever again” against her.

Shevchenko, the current number one ranked flyweight contender, is scheduled to make her Octagon return at Noche UFC later this month – headlining a ‘Fight Night’ billed card at T-Mobile Arena in an immediate championship rematch with Mexican gold holder, Grasso.

Rematching the pound-for-pound number one, Shevchenko suffered her first loss at the flyweight limit in a huge-upset loss in the co-main event at UFC 285 back in March, dropping a rear-naked choke loss to the Guadalajara title chaser.

Valentina Shevchenko issues stark warning to Alexa Grasso ahead of Noche UFC

However, ahead of her return to the Octagon in a bid to land the flyweight crown for the second time in her UFC tenure, Shevchenko insists that while Grasso managed to capitalize on a slip-up back in March en route to a submission win, the Mexico native has no chance of repeating history.

“Everything was by the plan,” Valentina Shevchenko told Red Corner MMA during a recent interview. “Until the moment in the fourth round, yes. I kind of expected from her (Alexa Grasso) – because she was in the position when she has to bring everything, do something crazy, or something like that. It’s obvious because the contenders, they do these things and I studied her previous fights.”

“I watched her previous fights, I expected what she did and it just happened,” Valentina Shevchenko explained. “It’s not gonna happen every again.”

With her title fight loss to Grasso, fan-favorite Krygsztan native, Shevchenko had suffered her first loss at the flyweight limit in nine fights, having successfully defended the crown on seven separate occasions during her impressive reign.

And outside the Octagon, Shevchenko has been earmarked to reportedly serve as a cover athlete alongside undisputed featherweight champion, Alexander Volkanovski – for the new EA Sports UFC 5 video game.

Alexa Grasso vows to submit Valentina Shevchenko at UFC Noche to end fluke talk

Ahead of her return to the Octagon at UFC Noche next month in Las Vegas, recently-minted undisputed flyweight champion, Alexa Grasso has claimed she hopes to either KO, or once again submit former titleholder, Valentina Shevchenko in the pair’s title re-run – in a bid to end suggestions of a prior fluke victory.

Grasso, the current flyweight champion and pound-for-pound number one, has been sidelined since turning in a spectacular upset win at UFC 285 back in March, submitting decorated champion, Shevchenko with a shocking rallying win, submitting the Kyrgyzstan native with a neck crank triumph

And booked to make her first attempted title defense in an immediate title re-run atop a UFC Noche event in September at the T-Mobile Arena, Grasso has vowed to finish Shevchenko again – in order to prevent talk of another fluke.

Alexa Grasso vows to rack up submission win over Valentina Shevchenko again

“I would love to knock her (Valentina Shevchenko) out, but I would also like to submit her again with a rear-naked choke so people don’t think it was a fluke, a mistake or anything like that,” Alexa Grasso told MMA Fighting. “I had my plan really clear. I knew she was going to turn, and that was it. It could end by submission, it could be a knockout, but I will win.”

In the midst of a five-fight winning run since making a move up to the flyweight division back in 2020, Mexican fan-favorite, Grasso debuted in the division with a unanimous decision win over Yi Jeon Kim, before beating recent winner, Maycee Barber, as well as Viviane Araujo in decision wins, after a submission success against Joanne Wood.

For Shevchenko, the decorated Muay Thai ace saw her stunning run of title fight wins come to a crashing halt with her upset loss to Grasso in March, having previously turned in a whopping seventh consecutive successful title defense in a close decision win over Taila Santos back in June of last year in Singapore at UFC 275.

Joanna Jedrzejczyk backs Ronda Rousey receiving immediate title fight in rumored return: ‘It’s her belt’

JedrzejczykFuture UFC Hall of Famer Joanna Jedrzejczyk believes women’s MMA pioneer Ronda Rousey is more than entitled to walk into a bantamweight title fight should she make her fabled return to the Octagon. Future UFC Hall of Famer Joanna Jedrzejczyk believes women’s MMA pioneer Ronda Rousey is more than entitled to walk into a bantamweight title fight should she make her fabled return to the Octagon.

Following an impressive unanimous decision victory over Irene Aldana at UFC 289 last month, two-division champ Amanda Nunes announced her retirement from mixed martial arts, vacating the bantamweight title in the process. With the division now wide open, fighters have been coming out of the woodwork in hopes of becoming the next 135-pound queen.

While the likeliest scenario has the division’s top two ranked contenders, Julianna Pena, and Raquel Pennington, vying for the title later this year, one rumor has already turned the division on its head. Recent reports have suggested that the first-ever UFC women’s world champion, Ronda Rousey, may be prepping a return to the UFC now that ‘The Lioness’ is no longer in the picture. Some fuel was added to the fire when rumors started flying that ‘Rowdy’ could be walking away from the WWE where she has been a top draw for the last several years.

Of course, not everyone is thrilled by the idea of Ronda Rousey walking straight into a UFC title after walking away from the sport seven years ago, but for former strawweight champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk, the bantamweight title has and will always belong to Rousey.

“She can fight for the vacant title. It’s her belt,” Jedrejczyk told The Schmo during International Fight Week.

As for who ‘Rowdy’ could face in a potential title tilt, Jedrzejczyk believes both Julianna Pena and Raquel Pennington would make fine opponents, but specifically noted ‘Rocky’ who has seen a bit of a career resurgence, winning five straight fights in the division.

“It can be Julianna or Raquel,” Jedrejczyk said. “Raquel deserves a title shot. She has a few win streaks so, yeah.”

Joanna Jedrzejczyk Offers Her Thoughts on the Rematch Alexa Grasso and Valentina Shevchenko

On September 16, newly crowned UFC flyweight champion Alexa Grasso will return to defend her title for the first time against the same woman she took the title from, Valentina Shevchenko. The two will headline a king-sized Fight Night card inside the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Asked for her thoughts on the highly anticipated rematch, Jedrzejczyk was unable to offer up a prediction, but she believes Grasso will go into the sequel significantly stronger and more confident than she did the first time around.

“I don’t know. I don’t like to predict the fights,” Jedrzejczyk said. “I know how tough, physically and mentally, Valentina is, but I know how strong you get after winning the UFC belt. It’s a totally different motivation. A different power you get in your head and in your muscles, so I really don’t know.”

Of course, JJ is speaking from experience, capturing the strawweight title with an impressive second-round TKO against two-time titleholder Carla Esparza at UFC 185. ‘Joanna Violence’ went on to defend the title an incredible five times.

“It feels like this extra power you can see,” Jedrzejczyk said of winning a UFC championship. “You feel like the whole universe is in you, with you, and behind your back. A perfect example is Leon Edwards and Kamaru Usman. That’s a perfect example of how challengers are becoming the champions and how dominant they are becoming” (h/t MiddleEasy).

Michael Bisping doubts Alexa Grasso landed a “fluke” title win in March

Relentlessly drilling her eventual back-take and submission success against Shevchenko during a pre-fight warm-up routine, Grasso, who plys her trade at Lobo Gym – has been backed as the better overal fighter when compared to Shevchenko by Bisping.

“It might sound crazy, but I think Alexa (Grasso) is the better fighter,” Michael Bisping said on his YouTube channel. “That doesn’t sound crazy to me at all. I thought Alexa looked really good. I think that Valentina Shevchenko has been a dominant force for so long, but everyone has their time. Everyone has their end. Everyone has their beginning of the end.”

“Is this the beginning of the end of Shevchenko?” Bisping pondered. “Are her best days behind her? I don’t know – maybe. Maybe she had an off night. Maybe Alexa Grasso is just a better fight. I thought she looked very well. It certainly wasn’t a fluke.”

And ahead of her first defense as a champion under the banner of the UFC, Grasso, 29, currently sits atop the women’s pound-for-pound rankings pile, following the retirement of Brazilian veteran Amanda Nunes back in June.

Maycee Barber

Maycee Barber is determined to run it back with the last woman to beat her inside the Octagon. That just happens to be reigning flyweight world champion, Alexa Grasso.

‘The Future’ lived up to her moniker on Saturday, scoring an impressive second-round TKO against Amanda Ribas in the UFC Jacksonville co-main event. The win will likely get her into the division’s top ten come Monday, but she admittedly has some work to do before snagging herself a title opportunity. Following her impressive performance inside the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena, Barber expressed her interest in a rematch with reigning flyweight queen Alexa Grasso, whether UFC gold is on the line or not.

“I’ve been saying it time and time again, you know, whether Alexa wins against Valentina [Shevchenko] or not, I do want that rematch,” Barber told media members during the UFC Jacksonville post-fight press conference. “So, we’ll see. You know, that would be ideal. But, we’ll see. I’m gonna go back and talk to Hunter [Campbell] and Mick [Maynard] and the team to figure it out” (h/t MMA Mania).

Maycee Barber Has Some More Work to Do Before Securing a Rematch with Alexa Grasso

Alexa Grasso has won five straight inside the Octagon, including a 2021 unanimous decision win over Maycee Barber. In March, Grasso shocked the world when she submitted Valentina Shevchenko to capture the flyweight crown in a stunning upset. Grasso is currently scheduled to defend her title against ‘Bullet’ on September 16 when the UFC returns to Sin City’s T-Mobile Arena.

Like Grasso, Maycee Barber finds herself on a five-fight win streak but knows that she will need to keep marching forward and adding names to her hit list before earning another crack at Grasso.

“I’ve evolved so much since that fight, and that’s why I want to get the rematch. Whether she’s the champ or not, I definitely want that rematch because I have evolved as a fighter, and I love the spot that I’m in,” Barber stated. The only way I get to a rematch is by continuing to progress and continuing to put on performances and go out and show the world what I’m capable of.”
