UFC Fight Night 109 Analysis: Alexander Gustafsson Battles Glover Teixeira On Home Turf

I’ve been gone for a minute but I’m back now and I’m ready to dig deep into one of the more anticipated fights of the year. Alexander Gustafsson battles Glover Teixeira right in his backyard, Stockholm, Sweden. While both men have been on the cusp of winning UFC gold, both are still very dangerous fighters with interesting tools in their arsenal. Both are strikers with more than enough capability to switch things up and fight in all different phases of the game. But which one has what it takes to get the W this weekend?

I’ve been gone for a minute but I’m back now and I’m ready to dig deep into one of the more anticipated fights of the year. Alexander Gustafsson battles Glover Teixeira right in his backyard, Stockholm, Sweden. While both men have been on the cusp of winning UFC gold, both are still very dangerous fighters with interesting tools in their arsenal. Both are strikers with more than enough capability to switch things up and fight in all different phases of the game. But which one has what it takes to get the W this weekend?

Like his current foe, Alexander Gustafsson has only lost to the best of the best of the division. Two close battles and a poor performance against Anthony Johnson have been the only losses to sully his record in the last few years and while you would think it would deter Swedish mixed martial artist from taking a step back, he has instead ramped things up. Alexander Gustafsson looks like a man on a mission and seems poised to put on the performance of his career against Teixeira. While he may be a striker at heart, in recent years we’ve seen Gustafsson turn into an all around mixed martial artist complete with takedowns.

Gustafsson is tenacious with his wrestling. Once he decides he wants to put you down and he’s in on your hips, you can rest assured that his man is going for a ride. But nonetheless, it’s his striking that’s going to do a great deal of the work in this fight as always. He has slick movement, an educated jab, and a variety of kicking techniques in his arsenal. The front kick and knees will be his best friends in this fight and should be used, to maintain his distance as well as his jab. Once he senses Teixeira wants to rush into the pocket for a left hook or takedown, uppercuts will likely go flying towards his foe’s chin to put the lights out or at least deter a follow up.

Glover Teixeira like Gustafsson before him felt the wrath of Anthony Johnson’s power last August, suffering a devastating knockout in the process. That said, Teixeira has since come back with a victory over tough prospect Jared Cannonier at UFC 208 this past February. While he has been getting the job done with his fists as of late, Teixeira’s last bout once again showcased his underrated grappling attack. He is proficient at securing a single leg and transitioning to a double leg takedown if his first attempt is stuffed. Once on the ground, Teixeira will either land ground and pound or search for a submission, most often a guillotine choke.

But just like his opponent, Glover Teixeira is a striker at heart and as such he plays aggressive counter striker looking for his opportunity to catch an opponent with crushing punches. He gets in his opponent’s faces, forces them to commit, then slips their punches with bobbing and weaving head movement. Once he slips past their strikes Teixeira returns fire with a left or right hook to either the body or the head. If he can pressure Gustafsson against the cage then you can bet that some helacious hooks will be coming his way.

This could decide the next challenger for the UFC light heavyweight title. Will Alexander Gustafsson get another crack? Can Glover Teixeira prove he still has something left kin the tank?

A Jones Rematch Awaits Alexander Gustafsson If He Can Return to Form at FN 109

There was a time when Alexander Gustafsson mauled the greatest to ever do it.

With no one expecting much going into UFC 165, the Swede tore into Toronto and beat Jon Jones from pillar to post in a way no one ever had.

He bloodied and battered the champion, repeatedly smashing him with combinations and even scoring a takedown. It wasn’t enough, with Jones digging deep late in the bout to narrowly come out ahead on the scorecards, but a star was born.

Gustafsson had arrived, doing more for himself in his second career loss than he had in his previous 15 victories.

That was nearly four years ago, and on Sunday, Gustafsson returns to action for only the fifth time since that, the crowning achievement of his MMA career. That such a crown was earned in a memorable loss, and that he has been largely inactive since, is perhaps instructive of his place in the sport.

Because of the shallowness of the light heavyweight class and the incapacity of those lurking on its fringes to move forward, Gustafsson has remained among the top few contenders at the weight since he fought Jones.

This comes despite his being 2-2 since, on the wrong end of Anthony Johnson’s thunder and a memorable decision against Daniel Cormier. Gustafsson has dispatched the foes he should in that time, but the wins have been uninspired, more a matter of “when” than “if” based on the caliber of opposition.

There is a case to be made that, coming out of the near-defeat of Jones, The Mauler squandered his prime.

He was as hot a commodity as the promotion had at 205, with Johnson not even in the UFC and Cormier not even at the weight. He looked like he could be setting up for a run at greatness.

He had size, he was more athletic than most realized and he appeared to be rounding out his arsenal with an eye on capturing gold.

Instead, what followed was a win over Jimi Manuwa and multiple yearlong layoffs and mixed results, interspersed with talk of retirement.

It was a confounding run, one that left people frustrated that someone with so much potential was treading water.

Yet thanks to the noted shallow division and incapacity of others to rise the ranks, Gustafsson has a chance to right the ship on Sunday.

Should he beat Glover Teixeira, another man pressed against the glass ceiling of contendership that separates Jones and Cormier from everyone else, Gustafsson may well springboard himself into a rematch with Jones.

Jones will return at UFC 214 to fight Cormier, and with a win, he’ll regain the title he lost to his own stupidity back in 2015. That win would likely provide a runback of the fight everyone loved so much in 2013, as the UFC would surely fancy a chance to pit Jones against the only man to ever challenge him.

It would represent a roundabout way for Gustafsson to get the fight, but he’d get it nonetheless. The best way to excite people about it would be for him to dispatch Teixeira with precision and viciousness, two things that have been agonizingly absent since he poured his heart and soul into the first dance with Jones.

Should he do that, people may be quick to see it and be inspired about his chances against Jones, particularly in light of their first meeting and his reputation for rising to his level of competition.

It remains a formidable condition, though, this ability of Gustafsson to look as excellent as most would suggest he is. In the face of a stretch of fits and starts that is being measured by years, it is hard to know what to expect on Sunday.

Still, the money, fame and opportunity that comes with a shot at Jones might be just the thing to bring Gustafsson out of his shell for the first time in a while.

That prospect alone makes his upcoming scrap a can’t-miss proposition.

Former UFC light heavyweight title challenger Glover Teixeira is getting ready for his upcoming fight against fellow UFC light heavyweight title challenger Alexander Gustafsson at UFC Fight Night 109. Although the two fighters are known for their knockout power, Teixeira expects this fight to go the distance and has been working hard on his cardio for the upcoming bout.

The reasoning behind Teixeira’s extra push for his condition is due to Gustafson’s history of pushing his opponents to their limits. His fights with Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier are a perfecting example of that. Teixeira put a ton of work into his upcoming fight as he spent three months preparing for it and is expecting to be in the octagon for 25 minutes.

“I think it could go all five rounds,” he told MMA Junkie. “Of course, I always look to finish as quickly as possible, by submission or knockout. But Gustafsson is tough, and he’s difficult put away. So I’m thinking it will probably last all rounds.”

Gustafsson is headlining his third UFC event and hoping to build on his winning streak after coming off a win over Jan B?achowicz after going 1-3 that includes losses to Jones, Cormier, and Anthony Johnson.

Teixeira anticipates using all of his skills in this upcoming fight and is ready for a grueling fight against Gustafsson.

“Gustafsson is extremely tough, and has very good physical conditioning,” Teixeira said. “He’s been a top fighter for several years. I’ve faced other opponents like him, so I know he’s difficult to fight. He walks and sometimes even runs around the octagon. So I have to be patient and make use of my agility. I’ll beat him. I don’t know how, but I’ll beat him. Either I’ll connect with a fist, or I’ll take him down and put my jiu-jitsu to work.”

On paper, the two fighters are similar. The only difference between them is that Gustafsson has had two shots at the light heavyweight title while Teixeira has only had one. Although Teixeira would like to have another fight for the title, his focus is on this upcoming fight, and then he will think about the future.

“My plan right now is to beat Gustafsson,” Teixeira said. “Then I’ll think about the future. Sometimes the UFC can be controversial. I try not to get involved in that. I try to just worry about what’s within my reach. I’ll worry about Gustafsson now, then we’ll decide what’s next.”

UFC Fight Night 109 takes place on Sunday, May 28, 2017, at Ericsson Globe in Stockholm, Sweden. The prelims will air on UFC Fight Pass with two bouts at 10 a.m. ET while four bouts will air on FOX Sports 1 at 11 a.m. ET. The main card will air on FOX Sports 1 at 1 p.m. ET with six bouts.
