With a court appeal recently shortening his California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) suspension from a jaw-dropping three years to only one, former Bellator middleweight champion Alexander Shlemenko will be returning to the cage soon.

News arrived from ESPN’s Brett Okamoto that Shlemenko will face former title contender Kendall Grove at Bellator 162 on October 21 from the FedEx Forum in Memphis, Tennessee. The former 185-pound champ has been out of action since Bellator 133 in February 2015, where he knocked out Melvin Manhoef with a highlight reel spinning backfist.

After the fight, Shlemenko was found to have testosterone to epitestosterone levels as high as 50:1 that of a normal man, and was issued a suspension by the CSAC. When that suspension ended up being for the aforementioned three years, Shlemenko appealed on a variety of tenants, one being that he did not receive a B-sample test that night. But the one that ultimately got his suspension reduced from three years to one was an appeal to the California Superior Court, who reduced the ban last month on the basis of an original letter from the CSAC stating Shlemenko was only suspended for a year.

That didn’t stop him from fighting in his native Russia in the meantime, however, as Shlemenko fought and beat Vyacheslav Vasilevsky twice this year. Prior to his win over Manhoef in Bellator, Shlemenko had lost two straight by submission to Tito Ortiz and Brandon Halsey, snapping an impressive 13-fight win streak where he defended the Bellator belt three times.

He’ll square off with Grove, the former UFC mainstay who has won two straight fights after also losing to Halsey at Bellator 137. Former WWE champ Bobby Lashley is also set to face a yet-to-be-named opponent at the Tennessee-based card.

Alexander Shlemenko’s CSAC Suspension Lifted

Former Bellator MMA middleweight champion Alexander Shlemenko could fight stateside much sooner than anticipated. Former Bellator MMA middleweight champion Alexander Shlemenko could fight stateside much sooner than anticipated.

According to a report from MMAFighting.com, the California Superior Court ruled that the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) was able to suspend “Storm” only until his license to fight in the state expired back on February 28.

Shlemenko received a three-year suspension after testing positive for the anabolic steroid oxandrolone. The failed test occurred following his knockout of Melvin Manhoef at Bellator 133 on February 13, 2015. The Russian fighter also had a 50:1 testosterone-to-epitestosterone ratio. The threshold for a failed test in California is 4:1.

Shlemenko’s attorney Howard Jacobs petitioned the court to reduce the suspension, arguing that the initial letter of notification Shlemenko received levied only a one-year suspension. The court agreed that CSAC could not increase the length of the suspension following the appeal process.

Additionally, Shlemenko’s $10,000 fine was reduced by half. CSAC handed down that portion of the fine because Shlemenko allegedly made false statements on drug-testing documents. However, Jacobs argued that commission rules state that a fine can only be given if false statements are made on a license application. The court agreed.

However, the court did not agree with Jacobs’ assertion that the commission was biased in its proceedings and needed to make Shlemenko’s “B” sample available as part of the testing protocol. But the decision to discipline the Russian fighter was upheld.

Shlemenko is still under contract with Bellator, but it is unclear if he will fight for the California-based promotion again. Since being hit with the suspension, he has fought twice in his native Russia under the M-1 banner, beating Vyacheslav Vasilevsky twice. Prior to his fight with Manhoef and another victory at a Fight Nights: Battle of Russia event, Shlemenko suffered back-to-back submission defeats. First he tapped to a Tito Ortiz arm-triangle in a light heavyweight affair, and then he relinquished the Bellator middleweight title to Brandon Halsey. He had defended the strap three times.

Alexander Shlemenko Suspended Three Years by CSAC After INSANE T/E Ratio Revealed

(via Bellator)

So not too long ago, it was revealed that former Bellator middleweight champion Alexander Shlemenko had tested positive for elevated testosterone following his win over Melvin Manhoef at Bellator 133. While our initial shock appeared to stem from the fact that the man above, not his cut from steel counterpart was the one juicing, yesterday’s CSAC hearing regarding Shlemenko’s punishment unveiled some rather mind-blowing information to say the very least.

Despite Shlemenko’s vehement deinal that he had taken any illegal substances, the results of his drug test revealed an absolutely bonkers 50/1 T/E ratio, as well as Oxandrolone and synthetic testosterone in his system.

That’s right. 50. To 1. If our steroid bust timeline is to be believed, that places Shlemenko second only to NFL receiver-cum-one-and-done MMA fighter Johnnie Morton’s 68.9 ratio on the list of highest T/E ratios ever. It should be reiterated that the average ratio for an athlete is 6/1.

So yeah, Shlemenko dun effed up, and he picked quite possibly the worst time to do it. As a result of NSAC’s newly-implemented guidelines regarding steroid infractions, Shlemenko was hammered with a three year suspension and a $10,000 fine. Additionally, Shlemenko’s win over Manhoef will be changed to a No Contest, which he can try to redeem when he is eligible to return to competition on February 13, 2018.

“Our job here is to protect the fighters, period,” said CSAC commissioner John Frierson. “The guy that he knocked out, he could have killed him.”

Honestly, this is probably a fitting end for Shlemenko’s MMA career…knocking out Manhoef with his patented spinning sh*t, I mean, not the lethal concoction of drugs running through his system while he did it. But so the saying goes: If you can’t do the time, don’t inject yourself with enough testosterone to give a rhinoceros cardiac arrest.
