Featherweight contender Alexander Volkanovski is ready to step in should he need to save the main event of UFC 240.

Max Holloway will defend his 145-pound title against Frankie Edgar in the event’s headliner which takes place July 27 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Many expected Volkanovski to get the next crack at the title, especially after he outpointed Jose Aldo at UFC 237 last month. However, he will now have to wait for the winner of Holloway vs. Edgar.

Despite initially being unhappy that he was skipped over, Volkanovski has seemingly moved on. However, he is still remaining fit so that he can step in on short notice should either competitor get injured or pull out.

“Staying fit, staying on weight and staying ready!!” Volkanovski wrote on Twitter. “I wish @BlessedMMA and @FrankieEdgar good health but I’ll be on standby to save the #UFC240 headliner if need be.”

It is not known if Volkanovski is staying on weight on his own volition, or whether the UFC have agreed to compensate him to do so.

However, the Las Vegas-based promotion would be smart to do the latter, especially given the history of the main event competitors. Holloway and Edgar were originally supposed to fight at UFC 218 in December 2017 until the latter had to pull out through injury.

They were slated to fight again a couple of months later at UFC 222, only, this time Holloway would pull out through injury. Hopefully, the third time is the charm.

UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway recently theorized why the promotion booked him against Frankie Edgar instead of rising star Alexander Volkanovski.

Holloway is scheduled to defend his title against Edgar in the main event of UFC 240, which takes place July 27 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. It will be the third time they are scheduled to face each other after injuries to both fighters canceled their previous two title fights. Holloway is hoping it’s a case of “third time’s the charm”:

“Third time’s the charm, I think,” Holloway said (via Hawaii News Now). “Why not do it, go back to the 10th island? They got great things going on right now with the (Toronto) Raptors and stuff. Gonna use that flow and use that energy. I can’t wait. I’m grateful. I’m finally happy that we get this Frankie fight. He’s a legend.”

Holloway’s Theory On Volkanovski

Many were surprised that Edgar was scheduled to face Holloway over Volkanovski. After all, “The Great” is undefeated in the UFC and is coming off wins over Chad Mendes and Jose Aldo.

Edgar, meanwhile, is 1-1 in his last two fights, having last competed in April of last year. However, “Blessed” believes the UFC might have wanted to see more from Volkanovski against Aldo:

“The UFC was holding off for that Alex and Jose fight and I think they wanted to see something more, I don’t know,” Holloway explained. “Maybe they put him in the oven to let him bake a little more for me. Look at what I had to do [to get a title shot], you know?

“I had to bake in the oven for a bit. I think they had the temperature on at about 200 (degrees) or something. It is what it is. I can’t wait. If that’s the guy and that’s the date, that’s the date. But first things first: We got “The Answer” and I got a bunch of questions so I can’t wait.

“He’s [Edgar] one of those guys at the end of my career, I wanna be like ‘hey, I got to fight him; I got to face him. I got to look at him across the Octagon.’ I’m excited for the challenge.”

UFC featherweight contender Alexander Volkanovski’s blood infection was so severe, he could have lost his leg.

After the high of defeating Jose Aldo at UFC 237 in Brazil earlier this month, the Aussie started feeling unwell and soon complained of a swollen foot.

He later stopped in Chile where he was hospitalized in Santiago for about a week with a blood infection until he was discharged recently.

Speaking to ESPN, “The Great” explained how things went down as well as the severity of the situation.

“I guess it was too hard to tell because I was injured because of the trauma from the kicks, and that sort of threw me off,” Volkanovski told ESPN. “But once I went on the plane it went crazy and obviously I just started feeling really crook [sick]. Then I went on the next flight and that’s when it really hit me; I had 40+ degree temperatures, it was nasty stuff. I was delirious by then and didn’t really know what was going on, but I was like ‘get me a doctor, I need a doctor’. So they did that and, yeah, it was pretty serious, the antibiotics didn’t work straight away; we were really worried about it hitting my tendons and bones because it was very close, once it does that you can have problems.

“So we were pretty lucky the plane stopped in Chile rather than if I’d got on the next flight. Within a couple of hours I would have had to tell them we’ve got to turn this flight around, and by then the damage would have been done and I could have lost the leg, lose your life. That stuff’s very, very serious, but it didn’t get to that stage. We got it just at the right time; we left it too long where it rocked me so much, but we got in just in time for it not to do serious damage.”

What’s Next For Volkanovski

Volkanovski is fortunately all better now, however, he recently revealed he was p*ssed off at being passed over for Frankie Edgar in getting the next featherweight title shot at UFC 240 in July.

However, he has been guaranteed by the UFC to face the winner. There is also the consolation of still being able to potentially fight on the same card as the highly-awaited Robert Whittaker vs. Israel Adesanya card.

That card is still in the works but is expected to take place in Sydney later this year.

“Yeah, definitely,” Volkanovski replied when asked about the possibility. “Israel Adesanya, a training partner of mine, he’s actually pushing for that to happen as well. Obviously to have Max and myself on that card, as well as Izzy and Rob Whittaker, you can imagine how big [that would be] for pay-per-views, we’re talking serious money for them, so that’s something they want. I think the UFC want that, too. It’s going to be massive this side of the world.

“We were talking to the match-makers and that’s their plans, they said ‘look obviously we need to see what happens with Max and Frankie, but we still would love to have Alex fight Max or whoever the winner is later this year on that card in Australia. So that’s what we’re looking for. And obviously Alex is the No. 1 contender, he’s next in line’.”

Alexander Volkanovski has returned home to his native Australia.

Volkanovski battled a bacterial infection shortly after his UFC 237 pay-per-view (PPV) victory over Jose Aldo in Brazil. He was taken to a hospital in Chile shortly after to treat his leg for the infection. Now, in a recent post on Instagram, Volkanovski has announced he has returned home to his family:

“Finally back!! Joe and I were so happy to be welcomed home by our families on arrival. Thank you to @doshlimousines for making this possible, coming home was a breeze. 1st class service every time”

Many believed Volkanovski would receive the next 145-pound title opportunity after besting Aldo in Brazil. However, former 155-pound champion Frankie Edgar received the nod, and will now challenge defending champion Max Holloway at UFC 240 in late July.

Volkanovski hasn’t lost a professional mixed martial arts (MMA) bout since 2013 and is currently on a 17-fight win streak. He is undefeated in his UFC tenure as well, owning wins over the likes of Aldo, Chad Mendes, Darren Elkins, Jeremy Stephens, and more.
