Longtime UFC commentator Joe Rogan believes featherweight champ Alexander Volkanovski belongs at the top of the promotion’s P4P rankings.
Since making his UFC debut in 2016, few fighters have been as dominant as Volkanovski. Despite that, ‘The Great’ finds himself firmly posited in the No. 2 spot in the UFC’s pound-for-pound rankings following a contentious loss to reigning lightweight champion Islam Makhachev at UFC 284 in February. Volkanovski suffered a unanimous decision defeat in his bid to become a two-division titleholder, but many fighters and fans believe he did more than enough to dethrone the ‘Dagestani Destroyer’ in The Land Down Under.
That includes popular podcaster Joe Rogan who firmly believes that Alexander Volkanovski deserved to have his hand raised and as a result, belongs at the time of the coveted P4P list.
“He’s No. 1 pound-for-pound,” Rogan said on his podcast. “They have him as not pound-for-pound [No. 1 in the UFC] because he lost that fight [to Islam Makhachev]. I think you could make a real argument that he won that fight. I think he won the fight. In my mind, he won the fight” (h/t MMA Fighting).
The way Rogan sees it, ‘The Great’ did a better job of imposing his will and delivering damage throughout the five-round affair.
“He did more damage,” Rogan said of Volkanovski. “I think he imposed his skill set. It’s also insanely impressive that he goes up from [featherweight] to fight a massive [lightweight]. That guy is as big at [155 pounds] as anybody is, and at the end of the fight, [Volkanovski] is on top beating him up. He drops him, gets on top of him and had massive moments throughout the fight.”
Joe Rogan Believes Charles Oliveira Will Benefit From Volkanovski’s Performance Against Islam Makhachev
On October 21, Makhachev will return to defend his title against Charles Oliveira in a long-awaited rematch between the pair. ‘Do Bronx’ came up short in their 2022 meeting, suffering a second-round submission, but after seeing Volkanovski take Makhachev to the limit, a blueprint for success against the ‘Dagestani Destroyer’ could give Oliveira an advantage when it comes to reclaiming the 155-pound title.
“You kind of see vulnerability in Islam after that fight with Volkanovski,” Rogan explained. “First of all, you see how good Volkanovski really is. F*cking animal. [But] it sort of gives an air of vulnerability with Islam where before people were like, ‘This guy’s unstoppable.’”
Following Oliveira’s incredibly impressive bounce-back victory against Beneil Dariush in June, Rogan expects a much different ‘Do Bronx’ come UFC 294 in Abu Dhabi.
“Looking at Charles versus Beneil Dariush, it’s like he’s back,” Rogan said.

Who had a budding friendship between UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski and NBA star Jamal Murray on their 2023 bingo card?
Volkanovski and Murray hooked up last year when the latter visited Australia and gave the MMA star some tips on how to improve his jump shot on the basketball court. In exchange, ‘The Great’ offered to show Murray a thing our two in the world of kickboxing. Since then, Volkanovski and Murray have been spotted together on multiple occasions. The 6’4″ NBA star even arrived with Volkanovski at UFC 290 for his featherweight title unification clash against Yair Rodriguez earlier this year.
Recently, Volkanovski and Murray created another viral moment together when the 145-pound king attempted to submit Murray in under 60 seconds during a training session.
Jamal Murray may have no formal martial arts training, but his size, strength, and agility helped him survive a minute-long onslaught from one of the greatest mixed martial arts in the world today. You can’t help, but be a bit impressed.
What’s Next for Alexander Volkanovski?
After securing a big win over Yair Rodriguez in his last outing, Volkanovski has a few options as to what will come next inside the Octagon. The likeliest scenario will see him once again putting his featherweight title on the line against streaking standout Ilia Topuria as early as January, but a rematch with current lightweight champion Islam Makhachev continues to loom large over the No. 1 ranked pound-for-pound fighter in the world.
In February, ‘The Great’ came up short in his bid to become a two-division world champion, but gave Islam Makhachev the fight of his life and in many opinions, did more than enough to secure a decision victory. Given the close and critically acclaimed nature of their scrap, everyone, including Volkanovski and the ‘Dagestani Destroyer’ seem intent on making their rematch a reality.
As for Jamal Murray, the 26 year old will begin his seventh year as a player for the Denver Nuggets when the NBA’s regular season gets underway in October.

Volkanovski, the current pound-for-pound number one fighter under the banner of the promotion, most recently headlined UFC 290 back in July during International Fight Week, successfully unifying the featherweight crowns with a TKO win over then-interim champion, Yair Rodríguez.
And in the time since, the New South Wales native has been tied to another title defense against the streaking finisher, Topuria – whom himself has earned his shot at featherweight spoils with a unanimous decision shutout win over former interim title challenger, Josh Emmett in a UFC Fight Night Jacksonville earlier this summer

“January sounds good to me,” Alexander Volkanovski posted on his official X account this morning.”
A dominant featherweight champion during his so-far perfect promotional run at the weight limit, Volkanovski has landed five successful title defenses in triumphs over Max Holloway twice, Brian Ortega, Chan Sung Jung, and the above-mentioned, Rodríguez. During his tenure with the promotion, Volkanovski has also laid waste to former title challenger, Chad Mendes, and inaugural featherweight best, Jose Aldo.

Sean O’Malley addresses potential Alexander Volkanovski title clash
“I would love to [move to featherweight] when Alexander Volkanovski is not the champion,” Sean O’Malley told ThatWasEpic during a recent interview. “That motherf*cker is pound-for-pound best in the world right now.”
“I’m confident I can knock anyone out,” Sean O’Malley explained. “I feel like I can definitely knock Alexander Volkanovski out. It’d be freaking very, very difficult, but I mean, maybe in a year or two if he’s still there, I would do it but I think he’s gonna move up to 155 (pounds). So, it depends who’s champ.”
As for Volkanovski, the New South Wales native has been pegged to defend his featherweight crown against incoming Georgian challenger, Ilia Topuria next, after announcing plans to potentially headline UFC 300 next year in a title fight rematch at lightweight against the incumbent, Islam Makhachev.

Reigning featherweight champion, Alexander Volkanovski responds to Conor McGregor’s most recent performance.
While McGregor has not fought actively for some time now, it has not stopped him from calling out countless fighters. This time it was the shot of Alexander Volkanovski, who would be on the receiving end of one of the Irishman’s classic social media message.
“Ask my bollox that little sausage volkonovski is no way p4p 1,” McGregor wrote. “Silly. That’s quick work for me. 100% accuracy work. Readable. Hittable. Hurtable. I like he has this title tho we should fight at some stage so the FW goats will have all faced off and let there be no debate.”
Volkanovski would quickly respond to the 35-year-old, calling for the showdown to take place on the upcoming UFC 300 card.
Alexander Volkanovski talks Conor McGregor fight
Talking on The MMA Fan Podcast, Volkanovski spoke about the matchup against McGregor and how he compares to him in terms of featherweight status.
It’s pretty easy for me in saying Conor McGregor because he was in featherweight,” Volkanovski said. “He was a featherweight. We’ve got to remember the champions I’ve beat. I’ve beaten every other champion in the featherweight division.
“The only champ I haven’t fought in the featherweight division is Conor McGregor. Conor McGregor in his prime in featherweight division would obviously be the all-time – I’m sure everyone would want to see that right now. If we could make that happen right now, somehow get prime Conor vs. prime Volk, it would be pretty special.” (H/T MMA Mania)
Volkanovski is set to take on Ilia Topuria as his next defence of the 145lb crown, while McGregor is ‘supposed’ to be taking on Michael Chandler next but the entire situation is very unclear.
