Alexander Volkanovski claims Islam Makhachev in running from UFC 294 title rematch

Set for a six week recovery period following a recent surgical procedure to address a long-standing elbow injury, undisputed featherweight champion, Alexander Volkanovski has accused rival, Islam Makhachev from “running” from a potential title rematch at UFC 294 in October.

Volkanovski, the recently-minted pound-for-pound number one, managed to retain the featherweight crown for the fifth time at UFC 290 earlier this month, landing a third round ground strikes TKO win over interim gold holder, Yair Rodríguez to successfully unify the featherweight titles.

The victory propelled Volkanovski back to the winner’s enclosure following a close unanimous decision loss to the aforenoted, Makhachev at UFC 284 back in February in Perth, Australia – seeing his promotional-perfect run come to an end.

And weighing up a potential title rematch with the Russian atop a UFC 294 card in October in the Middle East, Volkanovski has accused the former of “running” from a potential title rematch, after Makhachev suggested a welterweight championship clash with Leon Edwards for the event as he searches for an elusive opponent.

“You running brotha, you don’t want this smoke,” Alexander Volkanovski tweeted in response to Islam Makhachev.

Earmarked to headline the promotion’s return to the Etihad Arena in October, Makhachev was expected to fight former lightweight titleholder, Charles Oliveira at the event, however, the Brazilian confirmed that a niggling injury would prevent him from a return at UFC 294.

Yet to be paired for the pay-per-view headliner, Makhachev called for a welterweight title siege against Birmingham native, Edwards in the desert overnight.

Islam Makhachev urges Alexander Volkanovski to fight him at UFC 294

And appearing to deny claims that he is running from the long-awaited title rematch, Makhachev urged New South Wales native to actually pen a deal to meet him in October.

“Take the fight then,” Islam Makhachev tweeted at Alexander Volkanovski.

The Mayor of Alexander Volkanovski’s hometown refuses to show support for the reigning of featherweight champion.

Mixed martial arts has come a long way since the 1990s, both in terms of the development of the sport, and public perceptions. Pioneers fought hard to combat the initial criticism and to even get shows put on in certain places. Now, MMA’s popularity is as popular as it has ever been and continues to grow globally.

However, some people are still uneasy about the sports presence and the potential damage it can cause, harbouring views of the politicians of three decades ago.

Mayor of Alexander Volkanovski’s hometown critical of MMA

Alexander Volkanovski is as good a representation of the sport as anyone. A humble, down-to-earth family man, the 34-year-old handles himself well and has never had any controversies in or out of the cage, all while being one of the best fighters in the world.

Still, though, the Mayor of his hometown, Wollongong, refused to show support to the 145lb champion. Gordon Bradbery sees Volkanovski as a bad influence who is encouraging violence rather than a successful sportsman from the local area.

“I have a responsibility as the lord mayor of the city and as a responsible human being not to endorse those things which are violent,” Bradbery said speaking to ABC News. “It is against everything we stand for in our community in terms of violence and promoting violence.” (H /T MMA Mania)

“It is really important that we put a message out to young people and more specifically now with brain trauma on the agenda,” he continued. “What sort of endorsement is this if I put that nomination forward when his profile is supporting an activity like that?”

What did you think about Gordon Bradbery’s comments on Alexander Volkanovski and MMA?

Alexander Volkanovski offers Aljamain Sterling title fight after UFC 292 he deserves it

Off the back of his impressive title unification win at UFC 290 earlier this month, now-undisputed featherweight champion, Alexander Volkanovski has offered his bantamweight champion counterpart, Aljamain Sterling an immediate featherweight title fight – ahead of his expected division swansong at UFC 292 next month.

Headlining UFC 290 last weekend during International Fight Week, Australian technician, Volkanovski stopped then-interim champion, Yair Rodríguez with a late third round series of strikes, retaining the featherweight crown for the fifth consecutive occasion.

Alexander Volkanovski welcomes Aljamain Sterling to challenge him for gold

Linked with both an October lightweight title rematch with Islam Makhachev at UFC 294 in October, as well as a featherweight title defense against the surging Georgian contender, Ilia Topuria next, New South Wales favorite, Volkanovski has also welcomed a title fight with Uniondale native, Sterling next to boot.

“Aljo’s (Aljamain Sterling) in a position where if he gets – how many defenses that’ll be, that’ll be four or five – four defenses I think – if he was to take out Sean O’Malley – and I think that’d be great for his career, that’s definitely another one,” Alexander Volkanovski said on his YouTube channel

“I think – as I’ve already said, if he does that, he’s paid his dues,” Alexander Volkanovski explained. “He deserves it. So I’ll definitely welcome him to the featherweight [division]. I think he doesn’t need to go through anyone. I think he can go straight to me and let’s see if he takes the loss and stays at 145 (pounds) or takes the loss and tries to go back down to bantamweight.” (Transcribed by MMA News)

Slated to make his own Octagon return at UFC 292 in August, Sterling, the most prolific bantamweight champion in the history of the promotion, holds three consecutive successful title knockbacks.

Headlining the pay-per-view event in Boston, Massachusetts, Sterling takes on the streaking number two ranked challenger, Sean O’Malley.
