Todd Duffee met Alistair Overeem at Dynamite!! 2010 for the Dream interim heavyweight championship. Let’s give you some context—for those of you who don’t follow the sport heavily—about Duffee.

Duffee is a former UFC heavyweight and holds the UFC record for quickest knockout inside the Octagon with a seven-second knockout of Tim Hague at UFC 102.

Now Duffee was cut from the UFC following a third-round knockout loss at UFC 114 to Mike Russow and was cut due to attitude problems. So all of this makes the knockout better in my opinion.

The bout between Overeem and Duffee begins with Duffee coming out and quickly throwing a right punch and getting tangled up with Overeem. That short burst was the best of Duffee’s performance, as after that Overeem took over the bout with devastating knees and punches.

Looking at Overeem you know those punches and knees definitely don’t feel like a nice massage somewhere on one of the islands of Hawaii.

The beginning of the end happens when Duffee ends up along the ropes with Overeem pressing and firing on all cylinders. One left knee, a right punch and a left punch, then Duffee drops like a ton of bricks onto the ground.

With that knockout win, Overeem earned the Dream heavyweight title and is now his second heavyweight belt in MMA. (He also holds the Strikeforce heavyweight belt.) Overeem is set to face Fabricio Werdum this weekend in the first round of the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix.

Duffee has yet to fight since this bout on New Year’s Eve but is set to face Nick Gaston at Dream 17 on July 16th.

Strikeforce Dallas: Power Ranking Alistair Overeem’s 10 First-Round Beatdowns

Alistair Overeem has heard the talk. He knows you think he’s overrated. He knows you think he’s just a musclebound bully. He knows you don’t think his knockouts, while spectacular, ever come against anyone of consequence. And he knows you don’t think he’d stand a chance in the UFC.

Overeem understands all that. But if it’s all so true, why am I a little afraid for Fabricio Werdum at Strikeforce Dallas this Saturday?

It’s probably because Overeem seems more than a little motivated to use Werdum as a proxy for all those Internet critics, then as a springboard to the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix title and, ultimately, the Octagon.

Whether any of it actually happens (and whether the doubts over his UFC readiness are justified) is anyone’s guess. But it’s all possible when you’re capable of finishing fights as quickly as Overeem.

Whether he is overrated or not, I can count on one hand the number of fighters with as much demonstrated stopping power.

To get you prepared (or perhaps desensitized) for the violence you might witness this Saturday at Strikeforce Dallas, we proudly present a power ranking of Overeem’s 10 career first-round knockouts. Please enjoy.

Prior to his upcoming bout with Fabricio Werdum this weekend, Alistair Overeem took some out of his schedule to speak to the media and discuss his strategy and his thoughts on his opponent.

Overeem told Ariel Helwani of MMAFighting.com that he expects a tough bout against Werdum, a man who defeated the Dutch kickboxer via submission five years ago in Pride FC.

Since then, both fighters have drastically changed and have improved their overall game to compete against one another in a second encounter.

Overeem has captured multiple titles, competing in K-1 Grand Prix tournaments as well as other promotions including DREAM.

Werdum is also one of the most experienced fighters in mixed martial arts, who previously competed in the UFC where he earned a 5-2 record inside the Octagon.

In addition to Overeem and Werdum, Josh Barnett and Brett Rogers will also square off against each other in the second bracket of the tournament.

Strikeforce: Overeem vs. Werdum is live this weekend from the American Airlines Arena in Dallas, Texas.

Strikeforce: Overeem vs Werdum: Werdum Looking for the Knockout

Bleacher Report’s Nick Caron:

The hype continues to grow as we inch closer to the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix tournament fight between Fabricio Werdum and Alistair Overeem on June 18. As if a fight between two top-10 heavyweights wasn’t big enough, Werdum and his camp have bolstered the feud even further with a video released Wednesday afternoon in which the Brazilian takes a few shots at the Strikeforce Heavyweight champ.

“Overeem, be careful because I am going to break you once again,” he states while pointing at the camera. “If you stand up with me, I’m going to knock you out, and if you go to the ground, I’m going to submit you.”

This bout will be featured as the main event titled Strikeforce: Overeem vs. Werdum, but the fight has an even deeper meaning for these men as they attempt to prove their dominance. Overeem, the Strikeforce champion, has not lost an MMA fight since winning his title back in November 2007. His three-and-a-half year reign in Strikeforce and Dream has earned him the right to call himself one of the elite fighters on the planet.

But Werdum isn’t convinced. In his opinion, he has already proven that he is the superior fighter when he defeated Overeem in their previous fight. Of course, that fight was over five years ago and things have changed since then, but that tidbit of information hasn’t kept Werdum from confidently taunting the champion.

“You know that you’re my son, and you’ll always be my son,” he ends the video.

Expect fireworks next Saturday night when these heavyweight warriors go to battle for pride and the right to call the other his offspring.

Strikeforce: Overeem vs Werdum: Werdum to Overeem  “June Is My Month”

Bleacher Report’s Dale De Souza:

If there was ever a great day to be named Fabricio Werdum, this is that day, without question.

He’s facing off against the Strikeforce Heavyweight Champion Alistair Overeem in a rematch of their 2006 bout in PRIDE, he has the momentum of a decisive win against Fedor Emelienenko on his shoulders, and he’s got a chance to cement his status as one of the top two pound-for-pound best Heavyweights in the world in front of a packed madhouse in Dallas, Texas—my stomping grounds.

He also likes the idea of what the purchase of Strikeforce means for his future, as well as the potential behind his rematch with one Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva and rings being used instead of cages, but when it comes to his rematch with the champ next weekend in the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix quarterfinals as part of Strikeforce’s inaugural outing in Dallas, the rest of the discussions are obsolete.

The only thing on Fabricio Werdum’s mind other than his fight with Alistair Overeem is finishing his fight with Alistair Overeem.
