If Henry Cejudo does end up retiring, Aljamain Sterling is pretty confident he will be fighting for the bantamweight title next.
Following his TKO win over Dominick Cruz at UFC 249 earlier this month, Cejudo shocked many by announcing that he was going to retire. Although some remain skeptical, it does appear that Cejudo is serious about it.
And as far as Sterling knows, he believes the UFC will have one final conversation with the current champion before moving on to crown a new one.
“As far as what I can probably reveal, I believe the UFC is gonna have one last conversation with Cejudo just to make sure he’s definitive on retiring and then move on from there,” Sterling told MMA Fighting. “I don’t know what’s gonna happen with Petr Yan, because I think he’s in Thailand right now. So I don’t know how the whole thing with the visa issues.
“Obviously, Dana White said he would like to crown a new champion relatively soon. That could be UFC 250, [or] UFC 251. We don’t know yet. But it all depends on how everything opens up with the economy in the world again, and from there, the UFC will better assess the landscape and make their decisions based on that.”
Although Sterling has been slated for a fight with another top contender in Cory Sandhagen, he remains confident he will get the call. After all, he believes he has a better claim than anyone given his current four-fight winning streak.
“I’m at a 7.5 [or] 8 right now on a scale from 1-10,” Sterling said when asked to rate his chances. “I feel pretty good about it. If not, I fight Cory Sandhagen, beat him up, hopefully get the finish, and I can’t be denied after that. He beat Assuncao, John Lineker, and arguably, I think he has a better resume than Petr Yan.
“… I’m still focused on Cory Sandhagen. He’s the guy I’m still studying. If we have to make some slight adjustments, if it’s for Petr Yan, we’ll see what happens. Hopefully they can get him into the country and see if we can make this thing go down. If not, we’ll just wait and see what the UFC wants to do.”
Sterling’s recent win streak includes victories over Brett Johns, Cody Stamann, Jimmie Rivera and Pedro Munhoz.
Do you think Sterling should fight Yan for the vacant title?

It looks like a pivotal bantamweight bout between Aljamain Sterling and Cory Sandhagen is in the works for next month.
As the UFC resumes its fight schedule this weekend, plans are in motion for future events as well. One of those events is on June 6 and according to ESPN’s Ariel Helwani, the promotion is hoping for it to take place at the UFC Apex Center in Las Vegas though nothing is finalized as of yet.
With the event being a month away, not much has been finalized about the card in general other than reports stating that Amanda Nunes would defend her women’s featherweight title against Felicia Spencer.
However, it appears a fight between Sterling and Sandhagen is also slated for that show according to Helwani. He adds that it is currently being discussed with nothing signed right now.
“I reported Tuesday that the UFC is hoping the June 6 card will be able to take place at the Apex in Las Vegas, but it hasn’t been finalized yet because the Nevada State Athletic Commission isn’t up and running,” Helwani wrote on ESPN. “Nevada opening up would be a gift from above for the UFC because it would be easier running all the events there, and I suspect whenever Nevada opens for business many events will take place.
“Amazingly, that card is a month away and we still don’t know what the main event will be. Will it be Amanda Nunes vs. Felicia Spencer, or something bigger? One fight that has been discussed for that card is Aljamain Sterling vs. Cory Sandhagen, which is a potential No. 1 contender fight at 135, but it hasn’t been signed yet.”
Sterling is on a four-fight winning streak and has also won six of his last seven outings. He last outpointed Pedro Munhoz. Sandhagen, meanwhile, is 5-0 with the UFC and is coming off a huge win over Raphael Assuncao.
With both fighters having a claim for the next title shot, it is entirely possible that the winner of this fight faces the winner of this weekend’s UFC 249 co-headliner between Henry Cejudo and Dominick Cruz.
Then again, nothing is guaranteed when it comes to the bantamweight division.

Former lightweight champion Edgar has been competing at featherweight for the several years now. ‘The Answer’ has earned three title shots but never done quite enough to become a two-weight UFC champion.
Edgar was supposed to make his 135lb debut against Cory Sandhagen at UFC Raleigh in January. But, the New Jersey native Edgar decided to withdraw from the fight and instead face Chan Sung Jung on late notice at UFC Busan, where he suffered a quick KO loss. Despite originally claiming he could fight at both events, Edgar’s maiden fight at bantamweight was cancelled and as of right now it is unclear exactly when he’ll officially drop down to 135lbs.
Speaking to MMA Junkie Edgar expressed an interested in fighting #2 ranked bantamweight Sterling. The pair were supposed to face off last November but injury issues got in the way, Edgar explained.
“Aljamain’s been saying nobody wants to fight him or this and that. That’s the guy we were supposed to fight on this past card in November. That was a possibility, and it never came about. I believe he had to get surgery. So, that would make sense for me – come back and fight Aljamain in June. I don’t know what his plans are or what he has lined up, but someone along that line I think would be ideal.”
Edgar missed out on an immediate shot at 135lb champion Henry Cejudo despite being called out by ‘Triple C’ who’ll instead face Dominick Cruz on May 9. ‘The Answer’ says he’ll be more than happy to step in if someone gets injured but will need a little time to ensure he makes weight.
“If an opportunity comes up and it’s right, I’ll make some sacrifices to do so, but yeah, I do definitely need some time,” Edgar said. “I would like to do it the right way. Last fight, I kind of did it on two-weeks’ notice, went across to someone’s different country. I stacked the cards against myself. I don’t want to stack the cards against myself too much.
“It’s tough enough to fight these guys as it is, so I would like to prepare the right way, have a good weight cut and all that stuff, ideally. But again, I don’t say no very often, so we’ll see.”
