Today’s UFC 224 early weigh-ins saw a significant amount of drama when touted women’s strawweight Mackenzie Dern missed weight by an astonishing seven pounds for her main card bout against Amanda Bobby Cooper at tomorrow’s pay-per-view event from Rio.

The monster miss caused Dern to be fined 10 percent of her purse by CABMMA (the Brazilian athletic commission presiding over the event) and an additional 20 percent by the UFC themselves, but perhaps more damning was the fact that it was Dern’s third time missing the strawweight non-title fight weight of 116 pounds in only six professional MMA bouts.

As expected, Cooper called her out for her unprofessionalism, and the rest of MMA Twitter, of course, did the same.

The spotlight would expectedly be on the women’s bantamweight championship fight between Amanda Nunes and Raquel Pennington in the UFC 224 main event, but with both fighters making weight effectively, all of the focus is on the hype Dern brings and her inability to make weight consistently.

That could lead to a tense staredown with Cooper at this afternoon’s ceremonial weigh-ins, which you can watch streaming live at 4 p.m EST/1 p.m. PST below:

The MMA world was left scratching its collective head after news broke of Mackenzie Dern’s botched weight cut after coming in at a whopping seven pounds overweight for the strawweight limit prior to her main card bout againstAmanda Bobby Cooper at tomorrow’s UFC 224 from Rio.

While Dern’s UFC 224 opponent  has accepted the fight at catchweight, she as well as many others in the MMA community took to Twitter to offer their two cents over Dern coming in at 123 pounds for a 115-pound fight:

Dern will forfeit a percentage of her show purse to Cooper and the Commission overseeing UFC 224 in Brazil. Friday marks Dern’s third botched weight cut in her professional MMA career.

Amanda Cooper Destroys Mackenzie Dern For Massive Weight Miss

Amanda Cooper slammed Mackenzie Dern for her massive weight miss:

Mackenzie Dern missed weight by a whopping seven pounds for her UFC 224 bout with opponent Amanda Bobby Cooper earlier today.

Not surprisingly, Cooper wasn’t happy and has since called out rising star Dern on social media. Dern came in at 123 pounds for a 115-pound strawweight bout (which she could have made weight at 116 pounds for), but Cooper accepted the catchweight fight regardless.

Cooper took to Twitter immediately following the news of Dern’s botched weight cut, and didn’t hold her tongue while doing so:

This marks the third time in Dern’s professional MMA career that she’s missed the strawweight limit. Dern will now forfeit 10 percent of her show money from the athletic commission and 20 percent from the UFC to Cooper as punishment for missing weight.

Cooper, 23, even predicted Dern would have trouble making weight in the weeks leading into their UFC 224 showdown. Dern and Cooper will fight regardless on the main card of Saturday’s UFC 224.

Will Dern’s botched weight cut affect her performance against Cooper on Saturday?

Do you agree with Cooper that Dern’s extra seven pounds makes her a “disgrace to all professionals”?

UFC Reveals Sizable Fine For Mackenzie Dern

The UFC made Mackenzie Dern pay for missing weight.

Mackenzie Dern will pay for her latest weight miss.

Dern missed weight by an alarming seven pounds earlier today for her scheduled strawweight bout with Amanda Bobby Cooper at tomorrow’s (Sat., May 12, 2018) UFC 224 from the Jeunesse Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Although the fight will go on after Cooper agreed to still fight her in a catchweight bout according to CABMMA (the Brazilian athletic commission for MMA) official Cristiano Sampaio, Dern will be fined the standard 10 percent of her purse, which in turns goes to Cooper.

However, that won’t be the extent of her punishment, as MMAFighting.com has reported that the UFC also handed Dern an additional 20 percent fine for missing weight, which will also go to Cooper. The additional sanction resulted in a total 30 percent of her overall pay going to Cooper.

Dern has had repeated issues with making the strawweight limit of 115 pounds in the past, twice missing weight and even competed at women’s flyweight during her climb up the ranks towards her UFC debut this March, a decision win over Ashley Yoder at UFC 222. There, she made weight, but when she made a quick turnaround to face Cooper in the country of her heritage, the results were the opposite with the massive miss.

Dern has also made headlines in recent weeks for her highly-publicized split from the MMA Lab in Arizona, where reputed head coach John Crouch reportedly asked her to leave the team due to issues with commitment, to which she responded she wasn’t fond of training every day and wanted to live her life on the beach as well.

If she wants to be the star the UFC is building her up as, however, she’ll have to clean up her scale issues sooner rather than later.

Today, she’s just going to be a lot lighter in the pocketbook.

UFC 224 Media Day Staredowns: Did Amanda Cooper Snub Mackenzie Dern?

Did Amanda Bobby Cooper snub Mackenzie Dern at today’s #UFC224 media day?

The post UFC 224 Media Day Staredowns: Did Amanda Cooper Snub Mackenzie Dern? appeared first on LowKickMMA.com.

Earlier today, the media day for this Saturday night’s (May 12, 2018) UFC 224 went down from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and the fighters squared off in the traditional intense moment following the press event.

There was legend Vitor Belfort squaring off with Lyoto Machida for what is supposedly his last MMA fight in what appeared to be a bathrobe, but perhaps the most notable moment of the evening was rising talent Mackenzie Dern’s staredown with her second UFC opponent Amanda Bobby Cooper.

With both women dressed to the nines for the promotion for the buzzing bout, Dern and Cooper squared off in a polite-enough faceoff before Dern attempted to shake Cooper’s hand at the end but was denied. It was maybe a momentary slip, however, as Cooper went back to offer her hand shortly thereafter.
