Amanda Lemos scores decision victory over Mackenzie Dern in epic three-round war – UFC 298 Highlights

Mackenzie Dern

Mackenzie Dern and Amanda Lemos closed out the UFC 298 prelims with a bang on Saturday night.

Stepping in for a short-notice showdown with the one-time UFC title challenger, Dern showed her heart and determination throughout the three-round affair, never backing down even when she was battered and bloody in the second round.

Dern’s lead leg was compromised in the early going due to a series of vicious calf kicks courtesy of Lemos, but that didn’t stop Dern from marching forward and letting her hands go. However, Lemos nearly scored a finish in the second when Dern came rushing in and caught a counter that immediately busted up the Brazilian-American beauty’s nose.

Still, Dern never let up and narrowly escaped with a victory in the third after controlling a majority of the round with her world-class BJJ.

But despite her best efforts, it was Lemos who would have her hand raised after 15 grueling minutes.

Official Result: Amanda Lemos def. Mackenzie Dern via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)

Tatiana Suarez

Undefeated strawweight standout Tatiana Suarez will return to the Octagon on February 17.

Emanating from the Honda Center in Anaheim, UFC 298 will be headlined by a featherweight title tilt pitting reigning world champion Alexander Volkanovski against streaking contender Ilia Topuria. The event will also feature the return of former champ-champ Henry Cejudo as he meets Merab Dvalishvili.

Per a report from Aaron Bronsteter, Suarez will look to solidify herself as a future title challenger when she meets Amanda Lemos as part of the promotion’s return to The Golden State.

Tatiana Suarez (7-0 UFC, 10-0 MMA) made her promotional debut on The Ultimate Fighter season 23 and ran through the competition, scoring wins over Chelsea Bailey, JJ Aldrich, and Kate Jackson en route to the strawweight tournament final against Amanda Cooper. Suarez would go on to win the bout via a first-round darce choke.

She would earn four more wins before a devastating neck injury put her on the sidelines for almost four years.

Since then, she has returned to the Octagon, picking up right where she left off by earning back-to-back second-round guillotine choke submission victories over Montana De La Rosa and Jessica Andrade.

Amanda Lemos Looks to Bounce Back against Tatiana Suarez

Amanda Lemos (7-3 UFC, 13-3-1 MMA) will look to bounce back after coming up short in her first UFC title bid in August. Reigning strawweight world champion Zhang Weili handled Lemos with ease. Despite the setback, Lemos has proven herself to be a formidable foe in the division by earning wins over Marina Rodrigues, ‘The Karate Hottie’ Michelle Waterson-Gomez, and Angela Hill.

Lemos only has two losses dating back to 2019, both coming against current or former UFC champions. ‘Amandinha’ will be determined to get herself back into the title picture at UFC 298, and there is no bigger fight to do that than once against Tatiana Suarez.

Bouts currently announced for UFC 298 include:

  • Alexander Volkanovski(c) vs. Ilia Topuria (UFC featherweight title)
  • Merab Dvalishvili vs. Henry Cejudo
  • Tatiana Suarez vs. Amanda Lemos
  • Tai Tuivasa vs. Marcin Tybura
  • Anthony Hernandez vs. Ikram Aliskerov
  • Andrea Lee vs. Miranda Maverick
  • Marcos Rogerio de Lima vs. Justin Tafa
  • Zhang Mingyang vs. Brendson Ribeiro
  • Yusaku Kinoshita vs. Danny Barlow

Card is subject to change.

Zhang Weili Amanda Lemos UFC 292

Zhang Weili made quite the impact at UFC 292 with her dominant performance over Amanda Lemos. The media, fans, and even fellow fighters didn’t hesitate to give her props, which led to an extreme amount of tweets on Saturday night praising Zhang’s fantastic efforts.

Despite the smothering offense of Zhang, Lemos would not give up and was fully prepared to give Zhang five rounds of war. While Lemos had her moments, it was pretty apparent that the Chinese superstar Zhang was taking every round. Her grappling prowess would shine against the Brazillian and Lemos was hard-pressed to keep things standing. Even on the feet though, Zhang would prove to be more advanced. The Chinese superstar outstruck Lemos 50-23 at a distance, and in total: 296-24.

It was truly a standout performance by Zhang Weili, and the world didn’t hesitate a second before singing her praises on social media platforms like Twitter.

Twitter reacts to Zhang Weili’s impressive performance at UFC 292

“Weili completely dominated every round,” fellow fighter Tracy Cortez would say.

“Amazing fight by the champion Zhang Weili,” Casey Oneill tweeted.

“50-45 Weili for me. Some of those coulda been 10-8’s, I just didn’t go there myself,” Jillian DeCoursey would state. She was speaking on the fact that one of the judges ultimately chose to give Amanda Lemos a round. This was a fact that was met with pure mockery by the MMA world, as virtually everybody is of the opinion that Zhang Weili won every round.

In fact, Ben Askren was of the same opinion. After the judges’ decision was read, Askren would take to Twitter and demand answers for what he viewed as atrocious judging.

“Which one of these idiot judges gave Lemos a round???” Askren demanded. In the comments, many fans declared Zhang should’ve won 5-0, but there was a slight percentage of people that believed it was at least debatable that Zhang lost the fourth round to Lemos. Regardless, it was still a clean-cut victory for the Chinese champion, and one she can be proud of for a long time.

Zhang Weili

Zhang Weili delivered one of the most dominant performances of her career, dispatching Amanda Lemos in the UFC 292 co-main event on Saturday night.

Zhang Weili established her dominance from the get-go, taking Lemos to the ground and smothering her with superior strength and grappling. However, Lemos nearly caught the strawweight champ in a darce choke from the bottom. Unfortunately, Lemos was unable to gain control of Zhang’s lower half, allowing the champ to slide into side control as a way to defend against the maneuver. Before long, Lemos relinquished the hold and Zhang unleashed a flurry of ground-and-pound strikes as the first five minutes came to a close.

The second and third rounds saw Zhang in complete control, taking Lemos down at will and stifling the challenger’s offense.

The tide slowly began to turn in the fourth round as Zhang opted to stay on her feet and strike with Lemos. After eating a couple of solid shots from Lemos, Zhang opted to shoot for a takedown but nearly found herself in another darce choke attempt. Whilst fighting her way out of the hold, Lemos was able to scramble back to her feet, but she couldn’t muster enough offense to steal the round.

Coming out for the fifth and final round, Zhang Weili was determined to put an exclamation point on her performance and nearly did just that, sitting Lemos down with a massive right hand in the early moments of the round. Zhang unleashed a flurry of strikes in an attempt to earn the finish, but Lemos never once gave up, surviving the onslaught until the final horn sounded.

Official Result: Zhang Weili def. Amanda Lemos via unanimous decision (50-43, 50-44, 49-45)
