Amanda Nunes may have fought her last fight at 145 pounds after just winning the title.

Weeks after winning the strap, “The Lioness” took to Twitter today (Mon. January 14, 2019) and said “145 never again.”

In the video, she is struggling to put on a pair of her jeans.

This is likely due to the weight she put on in preparation for her jump up to featherweight:

It’s unclear how serious Nunes is about not fighting at featherweight again.

“The Lioness” made quick work of Cris Cyborg in the first round of their fight at UFC 232 last month. With the win, she is now the first-ever female “champ champ” in UFC history. The Brazilian already had the 135-pound championship heading into the fight. Nunes is now the first woman to defeat Cyborg in over a decade.

There aren’t many challengers left for Nunes at bantamweight. Perhaps a title defense at featherweight against someone like Megan Anderson, or a rematch with Cyborg would make more sense. Nunes was reluctant to give any details about her future at featherweight following her victory.

Perhaps she truly has fought her last bout at featherweight.

Pump the brakes on talk of Cris Cyborg leaving the UFC.

The former UFC women’s 145-pound champion’s UFC deal is set to expire in March. In her last Octagon appearance, Cyborg was defeated for the first time in over a decade. After the fight, many questioned whether or not Cyborg would return to the UFC, especially with her contract expiring.

But Cyborg’s coach, Jason Parillo, shut those rumors down in a recent interview with MMAjunkie:

“We’re not going to leave the UFC,” Parillo said. “We’re going to stay there, plug away and get back the title that Cris had. She has the time and ability to do it.

“If we could get a fight between now and March, that would be wonderful, but I don’t know if that’s going to happen. The negotiations are obviously the manager’s job, and I just want the best for Cris.”

Cyborg was finished in just under a minute by 135-pound champion Amanda Nunes. She lost her featherweight title in the process. With the victory, Nunes became the first-ever female dual-weight champion in UFC history. After the fight, Cyborg called for a rematch with Nunes. That doesn’t seem very likely, as Nunes said she’d like to make her fellow countrywoman wait two years for a rematch.

UFC President Dana White doesn’t believe a rematch makes much sense. If she does, in fact, decide to leave the UFC, there are plenty of options for Cyborg. She could always pursue a career in boxing, which she has said interests her. Also, other promotions like Bellator or ONE Championship would be happy to add her to their roster.

It will be interesting to see how Cyborg’s situation plays out in the coming months.

American Top Team (ATT) coach Conan Silveira was not surprised in the least bit by Amanda Nunes’ dramatic knockout of Cris Cyborg at UFC 232.

Since that historic night, Nunes has been anointed the greatest women’s fighter to ever compete in MMA. Silveira never doubted his pupil. He recently revealed he ‘knew’ she would win the belt:

“I knew that we were leaving that night with the belt,” Silveira said on the latest episode of The MMA Hour.

Silveira’s Take

Silveira opened up about their strategy for the fight. He believed it was a mistake for Cyborg to stand and trade with Nunes. That’s a bold statement, as Cyborg was by far the most feared knockout artist in women’s MMA. But Nunes is too precise for that, Silva said:

“We had the strategy. She was really well-trained for any situation the fight would [bring]. What happened was, Amanda is extremely dangerous when she sees an opening. And I think it was a big mistake from Cyborg to try and exchange with her. [Amanda] is very precise. And she has extremely heavy hands, and that’s the way the fight finished—Amanda knocking her out.”

According to Silveira, some male fighters that train at ATT don’t want to go toe-to toe-with Nunes in sparring sessions. But the “Lioness” doesn’t train with any women either. It’s only a few male fighters that train with, and her coach said she hits like one of them:

“Amanda doesn’t have any girl training partners. She only has male training partners. It’s not every fighter that trains with her, some of the guys don’t like to train with her because she hits hard. I think that’s pretty much a good explanation for her: she hits like a man,” he said.

A Complete Fighter

Nunes is not a one-trick pony, however. As her coach explains, it’s not just her power that makes her the GOAT. She is a complete fighter with all the tools to respond in any situation:

“You have to compare a complete MMA fighter to the best actors. When you’re acting and you can only try to be one type of character, you wanna be the good guy. But being the good guy in every movie isn’t going to win you an Oscar. [Amanda] is an actor or actress that can play anything. It doesn’t matter. You see it in acting. And you see it in fights; she plays a different character for every fight.

“Amanda has all the tools. [It’s not like she only knows] a little bit on the ground and a little bit of striking, she speaks fluently everywhere. Like I said, for every situation that happens, she knows how to answer the question,” he said.
