Amanda Nunes plans to not be in a hurry to give former UFC women’s featherweight champion Cris Cyborg a rematch. Instead, she’ll make her wait in order to get what she wants.

Nunes knocked out Cyborg in the first round in the co-headliner of UFC 232 to win the UFC women’s featherweight title. This contest went down on December 29, 2018 at The Forum in Inglewood, California. Now, she’s the champ of the women’s bantamweight and featherweight divisions.

The newly crowned double champion was speaking with the UFC Unfiltered podcast recently when she revealed something interesting. That was the fact that she doesn’t think Cyborg wanted to fight her. Thus, the reason it took so long for the first fight to take place. As a result, Nunes will make her wait two years for the rematch.

“Cyborg doesn’t want to fight me if it takes more than a year to prepare, and right now, I don’t think she’s gonna want it because I’m gonna ask for two years to be ready for her again,” Nunes said. “She said I wanted one year to be ready for her and she didn’t want to wait that much, she don’t wanna stay without fighting but right now I’m asking for two years for the rematch.”

In the eyes of Nunes, she will defend both belts after taking some time off. Anytime a fighter is able to accomplish this, they have this mindset. Whether the promotion steps in and strips her of one title remains to be seen. The UFC women’s bantamweight champion plans to defend the 135 pound title next.

“Yeah I’m gonna defend my belt, my original belt,” Nunes concluded (H/T to MMAFighting). “Yeah, for sure I’m gonna go down, defend my belt. My division is waiting for me and we will see what happens after but I don’t think Cyborg wants to wait for two years.”

For 28-year-old mixed martial artist Kayla Harrison (3-0), the conclusion of UFC 232’s co-main event brought forth a rollercoaster of emotions.

Harrison, a two-time Olympic gold medalist in judo, has made quite a name for herself in 2018. In her first year of fighting professionally, she has started her career undefeated at 3-0. All of her victories have come by way of finish. However, her goal has always been to fight and defeat the once-invincible knockout artist known as Cris Cyborg.

Unfortunately, her American Top Team (ATT) teammate Amanda Nunes beat her to the punch. With Cyborg’s UFC deal expiring in March, Harrison hopes the Brazilian can ink a deal with the Professional Fighters League (PFL), where she herself currently competes. Despite the dream match losing a bit of its shine, Harrison told ESPN she’s still down to fight Cyborg:

“I still think it would be awesome to fight her. One loss in 10 years doesn’t make her a dud. She’s still a complete wrecking machine. That was the greatest women’s fight of all time, and it kind of pisses me off it was overshadowed by so much stupidity and drama last week.

“I think the only thing that makes sense for her right now is a rematch with Amanda, but of course I would still fight her. No matter what, I would fight her.”

The Future Is Bright

While it’s unfortunate Harrison didn’t get her opportunity to become the first to defeat Cyborg since 2005, it’s hard to not be happy for Nunes. “The Lioness” made history at UFC 232 with her victory. She became the first-ever female dual-weight champion in the history of the promotion. Not to mention, she did it by knocking out the most dominant female fighter of all-time in under a minute.

With a young and dominant champion in Nunes leading the way, and impressive prospects like Harrison on the rise, the future of women’s MMA is looking very bright.

Amanda Nunes is the first-ever women’s double champ in UFC history.

Nunes pulled off the historic achievement when she knocked out Cris Cyborg at UFC 232 last weekend (Sat. December 29, 2018). The two women co-headlined the pay-per-view (PPV) from Inglewood, California. It took “The Lioness” under a minute to knock out her fellow countrywoman, something no other fighter has ever been able to do.

Now, holding both the UFC women’s bantamweight and featherweight titles, there are a lot of questions about what’s next for Nunes. Her coach and American Top Team (ATT) frontman Dan Lambert believes Nunes can actually defend both titles (via MMA Junkie):

“I know in some of the deeper divisions they have, it’s impossible to be a champ-champ. How’s ‘DC’ going to defend it against the best in the world at heavyweight and the best in the world at light heavyweight at the same time? It’s kind of impossible.

“But there’s not quite as many – I mean, obviously, the featherweight division, they don’t even have rankings out there. How many people do they even have there? So it may be possible for her to keep both.”

Should Nunes be able to pull that off, there will be absolutely no doubt she’s the greatest female fighter of all time. With wins over Ronda Rousey, Miesha Tate, and now Cyborg, Nunes has had the most legendary career of any female fighter who has ever stepped into the cage.

Proving able to defend two titles consecutively, something no fighter has ever done in the UFC as a man or woman, would only solidify her as the greatest to ever do it.
