Former longtime UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva was scheduled to take on rising contender Kelvin Gastelum at UFC 212 on June 3, 2017 in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, but it was reported last week that Gastelum had been flagged by USADA (United States Anti-Doping Agency) for a potential anti-doping violation, which subsequently forced him out of the bout with Silva.

The UFC quickly made it clear that “The Spider” would likely remain on the card, and names like Luke Rockhold and Vitor Belfort emerged as potential replacement opponents. Silva, however, doesn’t appear to be interested in fighting either man:

“I’m coming off a win (over Derek Brunson), right, after a long time without wins, so it doesn’t make sense to fight any of them because they are both coming off losses,” Silva said at a UFC 212 press conference in Rio de Janeiro (Via MMAFighting.com). “It’s not something that will add anything for me. It doesn’t make sense.

“I’m ready to fight whoever the UFC puts there. It doesn’t matter who that is, be someone who’s coming off wins and adds something to my legacy, otherwise it doesn’t make sense.”

Instead, Silva expressed interest in a rematch with former Strikeforce welterweight champion Nick Diaz:

“It’s something that was on the table ,too, it’s possible that it happens this fight with Nick,” said Silva.

“I respect him, he’s an excellent fighter,” Silva said. “It would be an interesting fight. It would be cool because this fight makes sense. The (first) fight was a no contest, so we’ll see. Anything can happen.”

The first fight was indeed declared a no-contest. Silva technically won the bout via unanimous decision, but the result was overturned after both men failed drug tests.

Diaz, like Silva, was handed a suspension for his failed drug test, but he was deemed eligible to fight again this past August, although he has yet to return to the Octagon.

Last week, it was reported that rising middleweight contender Kelvin Gastelum had been flagged by USADA (United States Anti-Doping Agency) for a potential anti-doping violation, forcing him to be pulled from his scheduled fight with Anderson Silva at June 3’s UFC 212 in Brazil.

Now, UFC President Dana White has been dealt with the task of finding Silva a new opponent, which may not be so easy:

“Obviously Anderson was willing to take on Kelvin Gastelum, who is a very tough and dangerous guy,” White told MMAjunkie at UFC 210’s post-event news conference. “I got to talk to Anderson. You all know, everybody in this room knows what it’s like dealing with Anderson. Not that it’s a bad thing; it’s just a process. It’s a process that I’m going to have to go through now.”

While White admitted that dealing with the former middleweight champion is a ‘process’, he also added in the fact that Silva has always stepped up and fought whoever was put in front of him.

Luckily, White may have a logical replacement, as ex-champion Luke Rockhold recently offered to take on “The Spider” in Brazil. Rockhold hasn’t competed since last June when he was shockingly knocked out by current titleholder Michael Bisping.

As far as the potential fight goes, White said that he looks forward to ‘walking through’ the process in order to make it happen:

“One of the things that I’ve always respected about Anderson – he didn’t want to fight Chael Sonnen again,” White said. “He said, ‘The guy is disrespectful, he’s a punk, and he doesn’t deserve to fight me.’ He fought him. There’s always been times where – Anderson steps up, and Anderson fights. Anderson and fought (Daniel) Cormier at (UFC) 200. He’s a stud, man. He’s the (greatest of all time), and I’m looking forward to walking through this process for the Luke Rockhold fight. We’ll see what happens.”

Kelvin Gastelum Flagged By USADA, Pulled From Bout With Anderson Silva

Rising middleweight contender Kelvin Gastelum has been notified by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) of a potential anti-doping violation in the aftermath of his first round TKO victory over Vitor Belfort last month in Brazil.

Gastelum was quickly booked to fight Anderson Silva at UFC 212 on June 3, 2012 after his win over Belfort, but he has now been pulled from that bout due to the fact that he has been provisionally suspended by USADA.

Check out the official statement from the UFC below:

The UFC organization was notified today that the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) informed Kelvin Gastelum of a potential Anti-Doping Policy violation involving Carboxy-Tetrahydrocannabinol (“Carboxy-THC”) which is a metabolite of marijuana and/or hashish, above the decision limit of 180 ng/mL, stemming from an in-competition sample collected in conjunction with his recent bout in Fortaleza, Brazil on March 11, 2017.

USADA, the independent administrator of the UFC Anti-Doping Policy, will handle the results management and appropriate adjudication of this case involving Gastelum, as it relates to the UFC Anti-Doping Policy and future UFC participation. Because the Brazilian MMA Athletic Commission (CABMMA) was the regulatory body overseeing the fight in Fortaleza and has licensing jurisdiction over Gastelum, USADA will work to ensure that the Commission has the necessary information to determine its proper judgment of Gastelum’s potential anti-doping violation. Additional information will be provided at the appropriate time as the process moves forward.

As a result of the potential anti-doping violation against Gastelum, USADA has placed him under a provisional suspension. While the UFC Anti-Doping Policy affords Gastelum full and fair due process rights before any possible adjudication of his case, because of the proximity to Gastelum’s scheduled June 3rd bout against Anderson Silva, Gastelum is being removed from the card and a replacement is currently being sought.

The promotion officially announced the fight earlier today (March 14, 2017):

Silva last competed at Feb. 11’s UFC 208 from Brooklyn, New York where he scored a decision victory over Derek Brunson. Prior to that, the 41-year-old had lost four out of his last five bouts including losses to Chris Weidman, Michael Bisping and Daniel Cormier.

Gastelum, on the other hand, is currently ranked as the No. 10 middleweight, as he has scored back-to-back stoppage victories since moving back up to 185-pounds. The former The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) winner finished Tim Kennedy this past December before scoring a brutal TKO victory over Vitor Belfort in the main event of last weekend’s UFC Fight Night 106.

UFC 212 is set to be headlined by a featherweight title unification bout between Jose Aldo and Max Holloway.
