UFC President Dana White has dealt with Anderson Silva for over a decade, including Silva’s first failed PED test after his UFC 183 bout against Nick Diaz.

White was asked about Silva’s situation after a now second failed test leading into his canceled headliner against Kelvin Gastelum at UFC Shanghai and did not give much uplifting news regarding the disgraced former champion.

During a media luncheon in Las Vegas last week, White had this to say about Silva:

“Obviously (I was) bummed out. I was bummed out. I don’t know. They’ve been pretty radio silent. I talked to Ed Soares a couple times and he hadn’t even really talked to Anderson.”

Silva attributed his first failed PED test to some kind of erectile dysfunction medication he was given to by a friend. USADA and the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) didn’t believe him, and he was suspended a full year for his indiscretion.

His team recently gave a similar explanation this time around, claiming the ever-popular tainted supplement defense, but if the outcome of his first excuse didn’t work, it could be extremely unlikely that

The 42-year-old legend is likely facing a longer suspension this time around being that this is his second offense, and even though his team suggests that “The Spider” will fight on, he’s running out of time – and excuses – as PED-related issues cloud the end of his otherwise great career.

What do you think about Silva’s legacy? Will it be cast aside due to two failed drug tests, or will the fact that he was not caught during his nearly seven-year run as middleweight champion still lend him a spot amongst the best mixed martial arts combatants of all-time?

Anderson Silva’s Team Blames Tainted Supplement For Failed Drug Test

Former middleweight champion and UFC legend Anderson Silva was flagged for the second time in his career for a positive drug test leading into his main event with Kelvin Gastelum in Shanghai last month.

Silva was unceremoniously pulled from the fight and is now facing a lengthy suspension given this was his second failed USADA test, but his coach has come to his defense using the ever-popular ‘tainted supplement’ excuse.

Silva’s conditioning coach Rogerio Camoes discussed his star pupil’s newest failed drug test on Brazilian television show “Revista Combate” on Tuesday:

“I’m with Anderson for many years and the first thing he said was, ‘Master, I didn’t take anything. I trust his word because Anderson is very mature and experienced, he has the conscience not to take anything that would compromise being suspended or taint his image.

“We believe in some contamination in some supplement. Every product he used, supplements, will be analyzed so we can prove there was a contamination. It’s a slow process, it’s not overnight, and it requires time and money. It’s very expensive.”

Many high profile fighters have used the same excuse when caught using performance-enhancing drugs, but Silva may not receive the benefit of the doubt this time around. Silva attributed his first failed test to some kind of over-the-counter, generic erectile dysfunction pills.

He was punished and suspended for a year regardless, and his team appears to be using a similar defense this time around, despite the fact that it didn’t grant him an appeal after the first failed test following UFC 183.

Camoes admitted to using testosterone replacement therapy himself, but stressed that ‘he never encourage anyone else to do so’.

The former champion, who ruled over the middleweight division for six years, has started looking more and more like an aged fighter in the waning part of his career, however, his conditioning coach believes we haven’t seen the last of “The Spider” in the Octagon:

“I believe he will (come back). In life, when someone is taken away from you, that’s when you want it the most. The thing he wants the most is fighting. I believe he will come back to fighting.

“Before all that happened, I remember saying to (boxing coach Luiz Carlos) Dorea, ‘This guy will fight for more three or four years. This guy will fight until he’s 45, 46 years old.’ He was like a young kid, so happy. Everything will be cleared.

“There will be a penalty, or course, we know the USADA rules, and even with a contamination, it’s the athlete’s responsibility what he takes and you have to be careful with that. We’re waiting for something to know which path we will go after all this.”

Do you believe Camoes tainted supplement defense? Will Anderson Silva ever fight again?

It looks as if Anderson Silva and Kelvin Gastelum will end up fighting after all.

According to FloCombat’s Damon Martin, the UFC is targeting a middleweight bout between Silva and Gastelum to headline UFC Fight Night: Shanghai on Nov. 25, 2017 in Shanghai, China.

The duo was originally scheduled to square off last June at UFC 212 in Brazil, but Gastelum was forced to withdraw from the bout after testing positive for Marijuana metabolites.

Silva has been out of action since scoring a closely fought decision victory over Derek Brunson last February at UFC 208 in Brooklyn, New York. Prior to that, he had lost four of his previous five bouts, including losses to Chris Weidman, Michael Bisping and Daniel Cormier. The fifth fight in that stretch came against Nick Diaz, and while Silva technically won the bout, it was changed to a no-contest after both men failed drug tests.

Gastelum, on the other hand, is coming off of a submission loss to Weidman last month on Long Island. Prior to that, he had scored back-to-back stoppage victories over Tim Kennedy and Vitor Belfort, although the win over Belfort was changed to a no-contest due to Gastelum’s failed drug test.

Anderson Silva’s fighting future is currently quite unclear.

The 41-year-old former longtime middleweight kingpin, who’s coming off of a decision victory over Derek Brunson at UFC 208 this past February in Brooklyn, was scheduled to take on rising contender Kelvin Gastelum at UFC 212 on June 3, 2017 in Brazil, but Gastelum was forced to withdraw from the bout after being flagged by USADA (United States Anti-Doping Agency) for an anti-doping violation.

Silva recently announced that he had ended his training camp and that he would not fighting at UFC 212, while hinting at a possible retirement in the process.

Today (May 9, 2017), however, Silva was called out by No. 12-ranked Uriah Hall on Twitter:

Silva and Hall were scheduled to do battle at UFC 198 in Brazil last year, but “The Spider” was forced out of the bout after suffering a gall bladder injury.

Hall has hit some rough times as of late, losing three straight bouts to the likes of Robert Whittaker, Brunson and Gegard Mousasi, but he remains an exciting fighter and a known name. He may represent the perfect challenge for Silva at this stage of the Brazilian’s career.

Is this a fight you’d like to see?

Former longtime UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva was set to take on rising contender Kelvin Gastelum at UFC 212 on June 3 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, but Gastelum was forced out of the fight after being flagged by USADA (United States Anti-Doping Agency) for a potential anti-doping violation.

Multiple fighters were rumored to be replacing Gastelum including former champions Luke Rockhold and Vitor Belfort, but Silva was essentially left without an opponent for weeks, as neither of those possibilities came to fruition. Eventually, he demanded an interim title fight with No. 1-ranked Yoel Romero, but that request was quickly denied by UFC President Dana White.

During a live Instagram stream yesterday (May 7, 2017), Silva had confirmed that he officially won’t be fighting at UFC 212 in his home country (Via MMAJunkie.com):

“I really wanted to fight in Brazil, my country, but it’s not going to happen,” Silva said. “I want to apologize for this. I really wanted to fight here, but it didn’t happen. I think I was hurt in this, but that’s it.”

In recent weeks, Silva, who is coming off of a decision victory over Derek Brunson in the co-main event of UFC 208 this past February in Brooklyn, has made headlines voicing his displeasure towards the way he has been treated by the UFC. He has even went as far to say that he’d be willing to retire, which led White to say that he ‘probably’ should.

As of now, “The Spider” claims that he’s done, although it’s unclear what his next move will be:

“I’m very disappointed,” Silva said at the occasion. “The guys don’t respect my legacy, don’t respect my story in the sport. I don’t know. I’m done.”

Gastelum, who had his latest win over Belfort overturned due to his failed drug test, recently accepted a three month suspension from the Brazilian Superior Justice Court of MMA. Prior to his fight with Belfort, Gastelum had won back-to-back fights over the likes of Johny Hendricks and Tim Kennedy, while appearing to be settling into his new home a 185 pounds.

He has, however, expressed interest in fighting Silva at UFC on FOX 25 on July 22, 2017 at Nassau Coliseum on Long Island when his suspension is up. Would you like to see the UFC re-book a bout between “The Spider” and Gastelum, or do you expect the Brazilian legend to hang up his gloves for good?
