Andy Ruiz Jr. vs. Jarrell Miller - Crawford vs. Madrimov Highlights

Former unified heavyweight world champion Andy Ruiz Jr. returned to the squared circle on Saturday night for a clash with 26-1 contender Jarrell Miller.

It’s been nearly two years since Ruiz Jr. last competed, earning a unanimous decision victory over Luis Ortiz via unanimous decision. With an overall record of 35-2 with 22 wins by way of knockout ‘The Destroyer’ was determined to prove that he is still a legitimate threat in the loaded heavyweight division.

Things started relatively slow in the opening round. That was until the final 10 seconds when Ruiz Jr. finally let his hands go, catching ‘Big Baby’ with a stiff combination. Ruiz Jr. threw a bit more in the following round, showing off his hand speed with a nice mixture of strikes.

After eating shots for most of the first two rounds, Miller finally started to land some solid counterstrikes and put ‘The Destroyer’ on his back foot in the third. The momentum really began to switch in the fifth with Miller walking down Ruiz Jr. and landing some nasty shots over the top.

In the closing moments of the round, ‘Big Baby’ appeared to rock Ruiz Jr., sending the fan favorite to his corner on wobbly legs.

By the time we got to the seventh, Ruiz Jr. appeared to have nothing left. Perhaps attempting to preserve his own gas tank, Miller offered little offense in the eighth and ninth, but his activity saw a slight uptick in the tenth. The final two rounds were relatively close with Ruiz Jr. offering up everything he had left in hopes that his early work plus a strong finish would be enough to steal a decision.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to win the contest — but he didn’t lose either.

Official Result: Andy Ruiz Jr. vs. Jarrel Miller is ruled a split draw (116-112, 114-114, 114-114)

The event occurred at the BMO Stadium in Los Angeles, California. In addition to Madrimov defending his title, the vacant WBO interim world super welterweight championship was also up for grabs.

Crawford and Madrimov pushed each other to their limit, with both having great moments in the fight. The champion gave “Bud” a tough matchup with his speed and movement. However, Crawford was able to do just enough to win by unanimous decision to remain undefeated.

Elsewhere on the card, WBA World Super Lightweight Champion Isaac Cruz put his title on the line against Jose Valenzuela. The challenger was able to deal with the pressure of “Pitbull” and outworked him for a split-decision win to become the new champion.

Boxing superstar Terence Crawford will make his long-awaited return to the ring this Saturday. He takes on Israil Madrimov for the WBA Super Welterweight Championship and the vacant WBO Interim World Super Welterweight Championship at the BMO Stadium in Los Angeles, California.

While all eyes will be on the main event, fans are also excited about the matchups on the undercard. One of the anticipated bout will feature Andy Ruiz Jr. facing Jarrell Miller in an interesting heavyweight contest

Andy Ruiz Jr. vs. Jarrell Miller

Ruiz Jr. returns to the boxing ring after nearly two years of absence from competition. His last fight was a unanimous decision win against Luis Ortiz on September 4, 2022. Since then, he’s been looking for a big fight with Deontay Wilder, Tyson Fury, or even his former rival Anthony Joshua. In addition to being unsuccessful in securing a fight with another heavyweight superstar, Ruiz Jr.’s inactivity has removed him from title opportunities.

The comeback fight against Miller will test whether the former champion can still threaten the rest of the division. That said, “Big Baby” isn’t an easy opponent to return against. Although Miller lost his fight against Daniel Dubious by TKO on December 23, 2023, he had moments where he hurt the current IBF World Heavyweight Champion.

DraftKings currently has the “Destroyer” victorious on Saturday. However, it’s unclear if his time away from competition will affect his performance.

Other Key Matchups On The Undercard

Elsewhere on the card, there are more fights that fans will be intrigued to watch. Here are some of the key matchups on the undercard:

  • Vacant WBA Light Heavyweight Championship: David Morrell (10-0) vs. Radivoje Kalajdzic (29-2)

Morrell will try to get his seventh straight knockout win this Saturday. Kalajdzic has more professional experience than his opponent, but Morrell’s punching power can be difficult to handle.

  • IBF International & WBA Continental Latin-American Lightweight Championship: Andy Cruz (3-0) vs. Antonio Moran (30-6-1)

Undefeated with three wins, Cruz will put his title on the line against Moran. Both fighters come into the matchup having won the last fight and try to get a statement win to put the division on notice.

  • USWBC & WBO International Heavyweight Championship: Jared Anderson (17-0) vs. Martin Bakole (20-1)

Anderson will take the next step toward becoming a title contender by taking on Bakole to open the main card. Both heavyweights have a record of 15 knockouts, so it’s possible the bout will not go the distance.

Ruiz hasn’t fought since losing his titles against Anthony Joshua when the pair met in December 2019. The 30-year-old was unable to repeat his monumental upset of the first fight and fell to a dominant decision defeat against the Brit.

“I was 16 years old when I had the honor to spar with UFC
Heavyweight Champion @andreiarlovski . Super tough guy lived up to his name The Pitbull. I

So many great memories at the wildcard boxing club where Freddie Roach
sharpened my skills as a boxer. Sorry for the vid quality it’s throwback.”

Manny Robles, the former trainer of Andy Ruiz Jr., saw their split coming.

Ruiz rose to superstardom when he shocked the world by defeating Anthony Joshua via seventh-round TKO to become the new unified heavyweight champion last summer.

The pair eventually rematched in December in what was a much different fight. Joshua was more technical and composed as he comfortably outpointed Ruiz, who notably came in 15 pounds heavier than the first fight.

In the end, Joshua became a two-time heavyweight champion while Ruiz later admitted that he didn’t train hard enough and was partying too much. Eventually, he split with Robles which didn’t come as a shock to the latter.

“Actually it didn’t come as a shock to me. I seen it coming during our camp for the second [Anthony] Joshua fight,” Robles told Fight Hub TV (via BJ Penn). “Things just weren’t going right, he wasn’t showing up at the gym. He said it himself, it’s nothing the world doesn’t know…he wasn’t disciplined, he failed coming to the gym and he failed putting in his part.

“After the fight obviously, I didn’t have any contact with him for a little while. I sent him a few messages, I replied once if I’m not mistaken, I just lost contact with him. Then all of a sudden I get a phone call from the dad, wanting to meet with me. [He] came to the gym, we sat down, we talked, he broke the news to me but I seen it coming.”

Robles detailed how Ruiz just didn’t listen to anybody — including his father — and needed someone to blame other than himself.

“He doesn’t listen, Andy doesn’t listen,” Robles added. “Andy doesn’t listen to anybody. He doesn’t listen to his dad, he doesn’t listen to no one. So I take it, it’s just easier to remove me from my position. It’s easier to blame me than to obviously take the blame himself.

“Andy’s a great guy man, he’s a great fighter, but he’s got to learn to hold himself accountable. He’s got to learn and stare himself in the mirror and say ‘hey listen I need to change,’ ’cause it’s easy to point fingers. It’s easy to remove people and say ‘it’s his fault, it’s his fault.’ No. It’s your fault. Take the blame yourself and grow up.”

Despite some harsh but necessary words, Robles is still cool with Ruiz and believes he can become a world champion again.

That’s assuming the trilogy is next.

Andy Ruiz Jr. has promised to come back stronger after his latest setback.

Ruiz attempted to defend his unified heavyweight titles against Anthony Joshua in Saudi Arabia last weekend. However, he was unable to replicate his performance from the first fight as he was handily defeated by “AJ” who outpointed him to a unanimous decision victory.

“The Destroyer” was notably 15 pounds heavier for the rematch and received plenty of criticism from fans as well as fellow fighters and boxing legends for his post-fight comments stating that his preparation wasn’t adequate and that he was partying too much.

Ruiz made a note of all of the feedback as he declared that he will become champion again in a recent social media post:

“I’ll be back stronger,” Ruiz tweeted. “I WILL be a champion once again. I appreciate all the love and support from my true fans.

“I appreciate the haters as well and can’t wait to prove the haters wrong once again. Back to the gym. Let’s start this journey to the belts ??? ?

Ruiz called for a trilogy fight with Joshua after his loss. Whether that is what’s next remains to be seen, however.

Do you think Ruiz will come back stronger?
