UFC 157 Fight-Picking Contest: Win ‘Ronda Knows’ and ‘Keep Calm and Break Arms’ Shirts From Fight Chix!

This Saturday marks the UFC’s first-ever women’s title fight between Ronda Rousey and Liz Carmouche, which headlines UFC 157 in Anaheim. In honor of this historic occasion, our friends at Fight Chix have hooked us up with a Rouseyriffic prize-package, featuring their Ronda Knows and Keep Calm and Break Arms t-shirts. Both are available in men’s and women’s styles, so whatever gender you claim to be, Fight Chix has you covered.

If you’d like to win these shirts, here’s what to do: Submit your prediction for the Rousey vs. Carmouche fight — as well as the Dan Henderson vs. Lyoto Machida co-main event — in the comments section. Your entry should look something like this:

Henderson def. Machida via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 30-27) 

Please include the judges’ scores if you think one or both of the fights will go the distance, as we might need them for a tie-breaker. Entries must be submitted by this Saturday at noon ET; only one entry per person will be accepted.

The most accurate guess will win the Ronda Knows/Keep Calm t-shirt package; if the winner happens to be a lady, she will also receive a pair of “Love the Mount” booty shorts, as a token of our respect. The second-place winner will earn one t-shirt of their choice. We’ll announce the results on Monday. Good luck.

Ryan Couture Reportedly Gets First UFC Fight Scheduled

It didn’t take long for new UFC lightweight Ryan Couture to get his first bout with the organization booked, and it won’t be an easy one. According to Sherdog.com, the former Strikeforce fighter will put his four-fight win streak on the line against Ultimate Fighter Season 9 winner Ross Pearson on the UFC on FUEL 9 card, taking place in Sweden on April 6th.

Pearson is coming off of a TKO win against fellow TUF Australia vs. the U.K. coach George Sotiropoulos last December. Couture last fought and won last month in Strikeforce’s final event against KJ Noons.

Fans have wondered what type of opponent Couture would get since his signing with the UFC was announced last week around the same time his father, retired champion Randy Couture, and the organization acrimoniously split when he signed with competitors Spike and Bellator.

As is usually the case with UFC matchmaking, Couture is certainly getting a stiff challenge in the much more experienced Pearson, but he’s also getting a huge opportunity. With his experience and quality of opponents Pearson may be the favorite in this fight, but it is certainly a winnable contest for the younger Couture.

Should Ryan beat Pearson, he’d immediately make himself known as a major player in the UFC’s lightweight division. How do you see the fight, nation? And is this a reasonable first UFC bout for Couture?

And though the days of absurd weight-differentials and wrestling masks have gone out of fashion in modern MMA, this weekend’s UFC 156 main card fight between Alistair Overeem and Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva at least provides the kind of thrilling immensity that qualifies it for the freak-fight category.

In honor of this must-see matchup, MANTO USA has given us a pair of their charming “Freak Fight of the Night” t-shirts, which we’re going to award to the two CagePotato readers who can most closely predict the result of Overeem vs. Silva. Bellator Officially Puts an End to Non-Title Super Fights [REJOICE!]

Those of you who watched Bellator’s debut on Spike TV – which drew in almost one million viewers, by the way – probably noticed a lack of upcoming advertised squash fights. No, I’m not just typing that as a way of reminding everyone that Renato “Babalu” Sobral and Seth Petruzelli were both eliminated from the light-heavyweight tournament. Rather, you may have noticed that Bellator didn’t announce any non-title super fights for the promotion’s champions.

That’s because Bellator CEO Bjorn has officially put an end to non-title super fights, according to a recent interview with MMAFrenzy. No more pointless bookings for the sake of keeping champions active (more on that in a second), no more risking that the champion will actually lose what was supposed to be a squash match. Also of note, champions will no longer be allowed to fight outside of the promotion – for obvious reasons.

While we never really supported non-title super fights to begin with, light-heavyweight champion Christian M’Pumbu’s loss to Travis Wiuff at Bellator 55 was enough for us to call for an official ban on the practice. And although it wasn’t a non-title super fight, the promotion didn’t exactly look great when its bantamweight champion, Eduardo Dantas, lost to Tyson Nam under the Shooto Brasil banner.

The only benefit that such fights offered was that the promotion didn’t have to worry about keeping its champions inactive. Fighters need to earn paychecks just like everyone else, and fighting only once per year severely hinders their ability to do that. Don’t worry though, Bjorn Rebney is assuring viewers that champions will now be fighting more often to compensate for the bans. As MMAFrenzy reported:

“Our champions will be defending very regularly, on a consistent basis, because we have all the tournaments we need now. There are a lot of incredible world title fights that we’ll get to see,” added Rebney when asked about the title picture. 

“It’s the format I had in my head many years ago, and this is the way it was supposed to work.”

So, instead of watching Bellator’s champions take on journeymen and gatekeepers, we’ll get to watch them consistently defend their titles against the winners of their division’s tournaments. It’s a welcome improvement.
