Daniel Cormier: There Are 10 Guys Like ‘Rumble’ Johnson

UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier had a rather frustrating 2016.

Cormier was scheduled to fight rival Jon Jones at UFC 197 in April of last year, but pulled out of the fight due to a leg injury. The fight was remade for that July’s UFC 200, but again the fight was cancelled due to Jones testing positive for a PED. Although Cormier fought and beat a smaller Anderson Silva, he could not hide the disappointment that  he could not prove himself against Jones yet again.

Things didn’t get better for the champ when his rematch with Anthony Johnson at UFC 206 fell through due to a groin injury.

It was recently been announced that he and “Rumble” will face off again at UFC 210 in April, speaking on The Luke Thomas Show yesterday, Cormier expressed how excited he is to get back into the Octagon and fight.

“I’m excited. Just last year was a very, very tough year, having to pull out of two fights, only getting to fight once. I usually fight a lot. 2015 I fought three times, I fought three of the best guys in the entire world. And last year, to only get one fight in, a three-round fight at that, it was tough. I feel excited now because I get to go back and do what I love to do, which is fight.”

“DC” also believes that Jones should fight somebody first before he is granted another title shot, but there may not be much of a point to that, as Cormier admits that he’s the only fighter he specifically game plans for.

“It’s very difficult to say that he doesn’t get a title shot because of who he is. For him competitively, he probably should fight somebody first because it’s been so long in between fights but I just don’t know if he’ll be granted that opportunity. I fight in April, July is when he comes back. If he wants to fight right back in July, that would be a pretty quick turn around for me… So he would essentially have to end up waiting for me which would put him more time on the shelf, or he would try to fight before.”

“I’m not really worried about what Anthony Johnson does. I have to worry about what I do to prepare myself. If I can be completely honest with you, the only guy that I actually watch what he does – try to game plan for him specifically – is [Jon] Jones. Because I know that against the rest of those guys my skills will outweigh their skills in the fight.

“I have to be specifically prepared for Jones because his skill set is so diverse and so unique, whereas Anthony is a big puncher, a big kicker. There are ten guys in the division like that. You don’t see many Jon Jones’s. Every heavyweight punches hard like Anthony does. Every 205 pounder’s fast. There are a lot of guys that mimic his type of style whereas there’s only one Jones so I feel like he’s the only guy that I specifically game plan for.”

Cormier is still be chomping at the bit to get his rematch with Jones but first he has to get through a knockout machine in Johnson, who has been on a tear, winning his last three fights all by KO.

Do you think “DC” will break “Rumble” once again, or will that cannon land on Cormier’s chin for possibly looking past one of the UFC’s most powerful strikers?

Let’s try this again.

Earlier today UFC posted on their website that Daniel Cormier is set to fight Anthony Johnson on the UFC 210 card at Key Bank Arena in Buffalo. This will be the second time the heavyweights meet inside the octagon, with cormier winning the first bout via rear naked choke after surviving a first round knockdown. Cormier then went on to defend the title against Alexander Gustafsson in an instant classic, and take out MMA legend Anderson Silva via unanimous decision.

Since their first fight Johnson has gone on to score 3 consecutive knockouts against Jimi Manuwa, Ryan Bader, and Glover Teixeira. He’s hoping the second time will be a charm as a scheduled fight out of the injury prone AKA camp is anything but promised.

Middleweights Chris Weidman and Gegard Mousasi are also set to clash on the same card.

The pay per view airs on April 8th and tickets go on sale Feb 17th.

What do you guys think, will this fight actually come to fruition?

Daniel Cormier vs. Anthony Johnson Rematch Slated For UFC 210

Daniel Cormier finally has his next light heavyweight defense set. Daniel Cormier finally has his next light heavyweight defense set.

The 205-champion, who experienced a whirlwind of unfortunate circumstances in three attempts to defend his belt in 2016, will make his return to the Octagon against expected title challenger Anthony “Rumble” Johnson at April 8’s UFC 210 from Buffalo, New York, Cormier announced this evening on UFC Tonight.

The two were originally set for their rematch at UFC 206 in December 2016 before Cormier suffered a groin injury and was forced to withdraw. Cormier defeated Johnson by third-round submission in their first match-up at 2015’s UFC 187 after getting rocked by a huge punch from “Rumble” early on.

Since then, he beat Alexander Gustafsson in a thrilling five-round affair at October 2015’s UFC 192, his first and only title defense. His long-awaited rematch with troubled MMA great Jon Jones was set for April 2016’s UFC 197, but a prior leg injury forced him out. “Bones” went on to beat replacement Ovince St. Preux at the event, and their rematch – which was going on two years in the making – was set for the main event of July 2016’s UFC 200.

But as we all know, that fight fell apart three days before it was scheduled to happen when Jones failed a USADA drug test for a banned substance, something he later attributed to using sexual performance enhancement drug Cialis. “DC” fought Anderson Silva and beat him in a boring, safe display of his wrestling, and headed for a rematch with “Rumble,” who again picked up his surging freight train form with three dominant first-round finishes.

If he can stay healthy, the 37-year-old Cormier’s return is set. Will he defend his gold once again in upstate New York this April?

Building on a previous report of widespread dissent and drama from former UFC light heavyweight champion Rashad Evans, several top fighters from South Florida’s famed Blackzilians gym are leaving the team.

According to a source obtained by BloodyElbow.com, high-profile Blackzilians Anthony Johnson, Evans, Stefan Struve, Michael Johnson, Gilbert Burns, Kamaru Usman, and Danny Roberts have all begun training at former Blackzilians striking coach Henri Hooft’s Combat Club gym in Boynton Beach, Fla. The report also detailed now-head coach Hooft’s coaching staff, which includes wrestling coach Greg Jones, head performance coach Dr. Corey Peacock, and strength and conditioning coach Jake Bonacci.

The source, who chose to remain unnamed, went into detail about the dramatic split that was focused on Blackzilians owner Glenn Robinson and his management company, Authentic Sports Management:

“A lot of problems trickled down from management. I believe Glenn [Robinson] probably had a lot of issues at the time that were going on and I think it was just for everybody’s best interest to start looking at other options and other opportunities.

“If management could have just managed and stayed out of the gym, and if coaches were allowed to just coach to the best of their ability, without being influenced or told how to do it or what was expected of them, and just allowed fighters to keep doing what they did and let their coaches tell them how to do it, this could have been avoided.”

This reported micro-management, coupled with a lack of a proper chain of command in place, clearly made both the staff and fighters uneasy, leading to the seeds of discord being sowed amongst former teammates.

The source tabbed this breach of communication as the main cause for the split, describing an environment where half of the athletes were on the coaches’ side and half were on management’s:

“That stuff starts at the top, and when lack of communication starts trickling down, miscommunication starts trickling down, behind closed doors, people start to become, maybe a little suspicious, maybe a little insecure, or always feeling like they are fighting for a job, looking over their shoulder, and that kind of thing created a relatively hostile environment.”

“The coaches and the fighters always tried to stay on the same page as much as possible. But there are certain alliances, certain fighters who rely more on management and some who rely more on coaches. Certain coaches would rely more on management, certain coaches would rely more on their relationship with fighters. I think that’s where the drama came into play.”

Ultimately, however, it was Robinson’s well-known financial issues that put an end to one of MMA’s most famous gyms. Things never improved after Robinson reportedly lost their once-prominent Jaco Hybrid Training Center base, and now the remaining Blackzilians not training with Hooft, called ‘up-and-comers’ who are not yet UFC level, have abandoned the name while training at a temporary facility.

That’s something the unnamed fighter said he was happy wouldn’t be going on at Hooft’s Combat Club, where the focus is reportedly more fighter-centric:

“Those maybe spilled over to the team a little bit. Everything needed to change from where it was at. It looks like Combat Club will really not be focusing on this team mentality, but rather a facility that has the best services for any fighter who wants to use them.”
