Despite the fact that Jon Jones’ fighting future is currently unclear due to his situation with the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA), UFC President Dana White had shown interest in booking top contender Anthony “Rumble” Johnson against “Bones”, the interim champion, rather than giving him a shot at reigning titleholder Daniel Cormier.

Ultimately Johnson received his wish, as he’s set to rematch Cormier in the main event of December 10’s UFC 206 from Toronto Canada. In fact, “Rumble” recently told MMAJunkie that he wasn’t going to accept any other bout aside from a title fight:

“It just came kind of out of the blue, and I said Dana’s crazy,” Johnson said. “I worked my ass off to get this title shot. I’m not about to let him or anybody else get in my way to get it. I wasn’t going to fight unless it was for the title, period. Because I deserved it.”

Johnson and Jones were actually scheduled to fight at April 2015’s UFC 187, but “Bones” was forced to withdraw from the bout due to legal issues. Cormier stepped up to replace him and ended up submitting Johnson to become the undisputed titleholder. Since losing to “DC”, “Rumble” has gone on a tear, scoring three straight knockout victories over the likes of Jimi Manuwa, Ryan Bader and Glover Teixeira.

With momentum behind him, Johnson is expecting a different outcome against Cormier this time around:

“I’m hungry,” Johnson said. “I wasn’t as hungry the first time because the opponent got changed up at the last minute, so it kind of threw me for a loop. This time I just plan on going out there and fighting. Why worry about who it is? Why worry about the crowd? Why worry about all the hype? I just want to fight.”

Who do you expect to walk away with 205-pound gold in December?

UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor is one of the most controversial sports figures in the world today. ‘The Notorious One’ dresses to impress, spends his money heavily, and can always be counted on to show up on fight night when he signs on the dotted line.

Throughout all this, however, the brash Irishman isn’t afraid to throw a few verbal jabs at his opponent in the midst of the lead-up to their bouts. ‘Mystic Mac’ is also credited for making some rather accurate predictions when it comes to throwing down in the Octagon, predicting multiple times the exact method, time, and round in which he would down his opponent.

All of these qualities make McGregor into the man you love, or the man you love to hate when it comes to combat sports. One man who doesn’t have a problem with the 145-pound champ’s witty antics is UFC light heavyweight champ Daniel Cormier, who recently compared McGregor to WWE Hall Of Famer Stone Cold Steve Austin in a recent interview with The Sun:

“He brings more eyes. I think he is the anti-hero,” said Cormier. “He is Stone Cold Steve Austin from 2000. The guy that you’re supposed to kinda root against, but you want to root for. Everything that he does before would have gotten people to boo you. But it’s like they’ve taken to it. It’s something so different that what they’re used to seeing the people love it. I think it’s fine.”

While MMA fans’ stance on the Irish champ is mixed throughout the community, he is still a heavy draw that persuades fans to hit the ‘order’ button on their remotes to tune in and cheer McGregor on or pray for his demise:

“Like I used to tell people when they used to ask about Tito Ortiz,” added Cormier. “I’m like you’re gonna pay to see the man fight because you want to see him either win, or you want to see him lose. He talks it and he backs it up. And Conor does the same thing. He’s working magic for the UFC.”

McGregor will be competing against Eddie Alvarez in the main event of UFC 205 for the lightweight title live on pay-per-view (PPV), from the Madison Square Garden arena in New York City on November 12, 2016.

Cormier will clash with Anthony ‘Rumble’ Johnson for the light heavyweight title at UFC 206 live on pay-per-view (PPV), from the Air Canada Centre from Toronto, Ontario, Canada on December 10, 2016.

Jon Jones went off on a Twitter-tirade late Wednesday night, calling out Anthony Johnson and the rest of the UFC’s light heavyweight division.

Johnson is set to face Daniel Cormier for the title later this year and the two began media work for the December card recently. “Rumble” angered Jones with comments he made about the currently-sidelined former titleholder.

“AJ you calling my out of the cage problems amazing is almost hysterical,” Jones said. “Trying to shit on me doesn’t make you look anymore like a saint.”

In an interview with TSN, Johnson said that Jones’ outside-the-Octagon legal troubles are “amazing.”

Jones also said that he will “always be that ‘normal guy’ who worked your ass,” in response to Cormier calling him a “normal guy that did a lot of things in the past.”

Currently, Jones is scheduled to appear before the Nevada Athletic Commission later this month to discuss his suspension for a failed drug test in July.

Can’t wait to get back and slap one of these light heavyweights, even on the sidelines I’m more relevant than anyone in that division.

Anthony Johnson On Cormier Rematch: “I Wasn’t Hungry The First Time”

When Daniel Cormier and Anthony ‘Rumble’ Johnson collide for the second time in their mixed martial arts (MMA) careers in the main event of UFC 206 this December, the former Olympian will be defending his title against a rejuvenated Johnson who has yet to take a loss since he and Cormier’s initial meeting.

Cormier and Johnson last met in the main event of UFC 187 for the then vacant light heavyweight title after Jon Jones was stripped of the belt, to which Johnson submitted to a rear-naked choke in the third round. In the first round, however, Johnson came as close as anyone to becoming the first man to finish Cormier in his MMA career, sending ‘DC’ flying across the Octagon with a single strike.

Now Johnson has a shot at redemption to avenge his only loss since making the jump up to 205 pounds, recently speaking to MMA Junkie about his second shot at 205-pound gold:

“I’m hungry,” Johnson said. “I wasn’t as hungry the first time because the opponent got changed up at the last minute, so it kind of threw me for a loop. This time I just plan on going out there and fighting. Why worry about who it is? Why worry about the crowd? Why worry about all the hype? I just want to fight.”

‘Rumble’ initially pushed for the throw-down between he and Cormier to be on the massive UFC 205 card from New York, but with no such help from Cormier, he settled for his date this December in Toronto:

“Daniel wasn’t pushing for the New York card either, so I kind of knew it wasn’t going to happen,” Johnson said. “He kept talking about Dec. 30, so I was down for fighting whenever after New York. It really didn’t matter. At this point, I just want to fight for the title – it doesn’t matter if it’s in somebody’s backyard.”

Despite the fact that the two elite light heavyweights have to punch each other in the face come fight night in Toronto, Johnson says it’s ‘all love and respect’ when interacting with Cormier outside the Octagon:RUmbleMad

“We talk a lot,” Johnson said. “He’s a talker. I’m not much of a talker, but I can talk it. It was fun. It’s all love and respect, but Dec. 10 I have to hate him. I have to beat him up. I have to take what he has.”

Upon the bout’s announcement Cormier has promised to stand and bang with the heavy handed ‘Rumble’ in the center of the Octagon, after having submitted Johnson the first time around last year:

“I believe he is a man of his word; I believe he’s going to try and trade with me, but at the end of the day he is a wrestler,” Johnson said. “I’m going to make him have to wrestle me. Because if I hit him with a better shot than I hit him with last time, he’s in for a long night.

“I look forward to seeing what Daniel can do. I look forward to seeing what I can do against Daniel. It’ll be very interesting. We’ll see what happens,” Johnson said. “Daniel’s smart. If he stays out of the way of my fists and my feet, he might live.”

Cormier and Johnson will collide in the main event of UFC 206 for the light heavyweight title live on pay-per-view (PPV), from the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on December 10, 2016.

Rumble Learns of Daniel Cormier’s Knee Injury During a Morning Show Interview

Anthony “Rumble” Johnson picked up a bit of intel while doing the morning television show circuit alongside his UFC 206 counterpart Daniel Cormier.

Breakfast Television, a Canadian morning show, was the venue for the joint interview. Host Dina Pugliese brought up Cormier‘s knee injury and asked Rumble if he sees that as Kryptonite for the reigning UFC light heavyweight champion.

Rumble responded quickly, “I didn’t know, but thank you for telling me.”

Whoops.

Cormier played it off jovially with the host as the interview continued. Pugliese tried to even the score by asking Johnson what his Kryptonite is, to which Johnson replied it would be his grandmother. It’s unlikely Cormier can use that to the same advantage as knowing about an opponent’s knee injury. Cormier said, “Grandmothers are off limits.”

Although, if he does try, we may see Grandma Rumble taking flight in several weeks at UFC 206.

After many contentious light-heavyweight rivalries from Tito Ortiz-Chuck Liddell to Cormier-Johnson, it is nice to see two combatants sit down cordially for interviews and even have a little fun, too.

Cormier and Johnson headline UFC 206 on December 10 at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto. Their previous meeting was for the vacant UFC light heavyweight championship, which Cormier won. The bout in Toronto will be Cormier‘s second title defense of the undisputed crown.

The waiting game is on, and Pugliese‘s additional info may result in UFC announcer Bruce Buffer shouting, “And new,” as Johnson gets his hand raised. It would certainly please Grandma Rumble.

Daniel Cormier: Rumble Can’t Win If He Doesn’t Knock Me Out

Last week it was reported on UFC Tonight that reigning light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier would next be defending his title in a rematch against top contender Anthony “Rumble” Johnson at December 10’s UFC 206 from Toronto, Canada.

The two first met at April 2015’s UFC 187 in a bout that saw Johnson nearly finish Cormier in the opening round after landing a huge right hand. “DC”, however, would battle back and ultimately score a submission victory. As far as the rematch goes, Cormier said “Rumble” only has one way to win, which won’t be enough:

cormier-joe-camporeale-usa-today-sports

“I respect Anthony, I like Anthony a lot, I’ll be honest with you,” Cormier explained to Ariel Helwani on yesterday’s edition of The MMA Hour. “I think he’s a phenomenal fighter. I think he’s tough as nails, he hits hard as can be, but the truth is if he doesn’t knock me out, he can’t win the fight, and that’s really not enough. You can’t have one avenue to victory. He has to knock me out because I know Anthony Johnson can’t out-hustle me over 25 minutes. I know Anthony Johnson’s not gonna submit me. I know the only way he’s going to beat me is to knock me out, and one avenue to victory is not enough.”

Cormier was supposed to finally settle the score with bitter rival and former longtime champion Jon Jones at last July’s UFC 200, but Jones was forced to withdraw just days prior after being notified of a potential anti-doping violation. Despite not receiving the fight he’s been waiting so long for, and once again having to fight Johnson after doing battle with him just last year, Cormier claims that his motivation is higher than ever:

Daniel Cormier

“I’m extremely motivated to fight him,” the light heavyweight champ explained. “I like how Anthony looks so phenomenal in his fights that people kinda make him into King Kong. It’s like he’s 10 feet tall, and I like that. I like people viewing him in that way, cause then I get to go out and smash on him and show them that it doesn’t matter what you build these people into. Whenever [two guys] go into the Octagon and they fight, the guy that’s more skilled and more well-rounded is going to beat him, so I like that they build him into this superman.”

Do you expect Cormier to once again topple Johnson in December?
