Thanks to the power of social media, fighters have been able to get their side of the story out rather quickly.
Case in point, Anthony “Rumble” Johnson recently took to Instagram with a series of video messages to explain why he isn’t facing Jon Jones later this month for the interim UFC light heavyweight title at UFC 197. Instead, the main event role will go to Ovince Saint Preux.
Johnson confirmed that he recently underwent surgery on his mouth, as he had to have “four screws put into my jaw.”
Jones has questioned why Johnson wouldn’t fight him, but the contender isn’t sure if “Bones” was told the truth or not.
“I never said ‘OK’ to the fight,” Johnson stated. “I never said ‘Yeah.’ I just want to let you guys know what the deal was and hopefully we get to the bottom of it because something’s not right.
“Him being told that I accepted the fight and I never said it. I heard something totally different as far as coming from his camp. I heard other things. It is what it is.”
Unfortunate news broke yesterday (April 1, 2016) when it was announced that reigning UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier had suffered an injury that would force him out of his scheduled rematch with archrival Jon Jones at April 23’s UFC 197. Unfortunate news broke yesterday (April 1, 2016) when it was announced that reigning UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier had suffered an injury that would force him out of his scheduled rematch with archrival Jon Jones at April 23’s UFC 197.
After a bad blood infused lead up, the two first met at January 2015’s UFC 182, with Jones successfully defending his title in a clear cut unanimous decision win.
However, “Bones” then ran into some legal issues last April, forcing the UFC to strip him of his long held strap in which Cormier would win with a submission victory over Anthony “Rumble” Johnson at UFC 187.
Jones has since been reinstated, and was gearing up to fight for the belt he had never technically lost against his most bitter rival.
With that being said, one would think that the ex-champ would take this opportunity to jab at Cormier when he’s down, but Jones actually took to twitterto wish “DC” a speedy recovery:
I don’t wish injuries on anyone, I hope you have a healthy recovery Daniel. Enjoy that belt
As far as UFC 197 goes, the UFC has yet to comment on whether or not Jones will remain on the card, and who could possibly replace Cormier.
“Bones”, however, who has been criticized in the past for declining short notice fights, took to his Instagram to make it clear that he’s willing to accept any and all challenges:
Although it appears that Jon Jones will still be able to fight Daniel Cormier in the scheduled UFC 197 main event, another UFC Light Heavyweight contender is making sure he’s ready to go just in case “Bones” is unable to make the walk to the Octagon on April 23rd.
Blackzilian fighter Kamaru Usman told MMAFighting.com this week that his teammate, Anthony “Rumble” Johnson, is making sure to be in shape in case another 205’er is needed on 4/23.
“Anthony has been ready,” said Usman. “He stays in the gym. He comes in and gets a session here and there. But he’s one of those guys that you can just throw in and say, ‘hey, we need to go fight,’ and he’s ready to go. So Anthony is ready just in case. Ultimately he’s going to be the guy who steps in there. But I can tell you this: he’ll be ready.”
Usman continued, “You don’t want to wish something negative on guys, because he’s a very respectful guy. But, this is the fight business. Things happen all the time. And so Anthony is one of those guys, he is going to be ready. Whether something happens or not, he is going to be ready for that. He would love that Daniel Cormier fight back.”
Headlined by Jon Jones vs. Daniel Cormier II for the UFC Light Heavyweight title and featuring Demetrious Johnson vs. Henry Cejudo for the UFC Flyweight title, UFC 197 takes place on Saturday, April 23, 2016 from Las Vegas, Nevada.

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones has some big plans for his future and those plans involve a change of weight classes. Jones recently did a Q&A session on Twitter with fans and in that Q&A, Jones revealed his plans.
When asked how many more times he would fight in the light heavyweight division, Jones responded by saying three more times.
Jones has a point to his plans as he has a history with all of the fighters he listed.
With Cormier, Jones beat him at UFC 182 to retain his title. Jones was then scheduled to fight Johnson at UFC 187, but Jones was stripped of the belt and indefinitely suspended by the UFC in conjunction with a hit-and-run accident that he was involved in on April 28th. The UFC then booked Johnson vs. Cormier at UFC 187, which saw Cormier beat Johnson.
Jones and Gustafsson have history as the two fight at UFC 165, which saw Jones beat Gustafsson. The fight was a close one as it went all five rounds and some people thought Gustafsson won the fight.
The UFC is expected to announce a date for the Cormier vs. Jones fight soon.
