Yesterday (June 14, 2017), it was finally announced that Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor would square off in a boxing match on August 26, 2017 in Las Vegas, Nevada. The announcement has thrown the combat sports world into a frenzy, and the event is certainly set to be amongst the biggest in the history of combat sports.

Because of that, many fighters have expressed interest in competing on the undercard, which will be put together by Mayweather promotions.

One fighter that falls into this category is UFC heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic, who took to his official Twitter account to call out IBF, WBA and IBO heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua:

Miocic, who has a background in boxing, has spoke on fighting Joshua before, and Joshua has expressed interest in competing on the undercard of Mayweather vs. McGregor, but it just doesn’t seem likely that the bout will be made.

Miocic is coming off of a brutal first round knockout victory over Junior Dos Santos in their rematch last month in Texas, and he’s currently awaiting his next opponent.

Joshua, on the other hand, is coming off of a thrilling stoppage victory over the legendary Wladimir Klitschko, and many expect the two to rematch at some point later this year.

What do you make of this situation?

With a potential boxing mega fight between UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor and former pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather seemingly closer than ever towards becoming a reality, the talk of cross over bouts between the two sports continues to soar.

Most recently, UFC heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic, who happens to be a 2009 Cleveland Golden Gloves boxing champion as well as a National quarterfinalist, gave his thoughts on how he’d match up in a boxing match against reigning IBF, IBO and WBA (Super) heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua:

“If the fight happens, me against Joshua would be a great fight,” Miocic said appearance on “The MMA Hour.” “I think I’d surprise a lot of people, I think it’d be an amazing fight … let’s do it! He’s a great guy. He’s tough, he’s a champion for a reason. I think I’d give him a run for his money.”

Miocic has indeed used his hands to achieve much of his recent success, as he’s scored five consecutive T/KO victories, with four of them being in the first round over the heavyweight division’s elite. Joshua, however, is a former Olympian and is coming off of a thrilling knockout victory over legendary former champion Wladimir Klitschko.

The Telegraph

It’d be safe to assume that many in the combat sports community would hold Joshua as a serious favorite over Miocic in a boxing match, similar to how many are holding Mayweather as a massive favorite over McGregor. Miocic, however, while admitting that Joshua is the ‘best in the world’, feels as if he’d be ‘fine’ against the British knockout artist:

“I do a lot of boxing and I’ve boxed before, working on my boxing I think I’d be fine. “He’s a tough guy, he’s the best in the world. But, I’m pretty tough, too,” added Miocic.

Would you give Miocic any chance in a boxing match against Joshua?

With the boxing superfight between UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather Jr. possibly being on the horizon, many mixed martial arts (MMA) fighters are finding themselves curious as to how they’d fare in boxing.

Fighters such as Nate Diaz and UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo have followed suit and applied for their boxing licenses as well.

A fight between McGregor and Mayweather will be a fight between a man who has never competed in a professional boxing fight in his life (McGregor), and possibly the greatest to ever lace up a pair of gloves (Mayweather). While some combat sports fans are expecting a complete wipeout of McGregor, some are actually giving him a puncher’s chance.

UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier was recently asked by a fan how he believes he’d do in a boxing match against the likes of Anthony Joshua. Cormier responded by saying that in a boxing match he would be knocked out ‘so fast’ by Joshua:

Cormier doesn’t have to worry about stepping into a boxing ring anytime soon, as the 205-pound champ most likely will defend his title against longtime rival Jon Jones next. Jones’ United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) suspension is nearly up, and a bout between the two could be on the horizon.

How do you think Cormier would fare in the boxing ring against the elite such as Anthony Joshua?
