Anthony Pettis is set for a big fight in the co-main event of UFC 241 when he takes on Nate Diaz.

Yet, that was not always the plan as “Showtime” reveals he was offered Conor McGregor at UFC 244 in Madison Square Garden.

“First it was McGregor and I was like let’s do it in Madison Square Garden,” Pettis said during the UFC 241 open workouts (h/t MMA Fighting). “Something fell off with that and then it popped up Nate and I was just like we’ll see what happens. Then he signed the contract and we’re here.”

But, it was never brought to the contract stage. Instead, it was just verbally discussed but the former lightweight champ didn’t hesitate to accept.

“It was just mentioned,” Pettis said about fighting McGregor. “They’re like at Madison Square Garden. Like f—k yeah.”

Although Anthony Pettis didn’t get the Conor McGregor fight he so wanted, he is glad to be fighting Diaz.

“It doesn’t really matter. I’m fighting the best in the world,” Pettis said when asked if he would still like to face McGregor. “Nate’s one of the guys. He’s definitely a tough dude. Even though me and Nate have our problems, I respect his game.

“He’s a fan favorite fighter. He’s going to come and try to fight me. He’s not going to try holding me down for 15 minutes looking to sneak over a decision so I respect that about him.”

Anthony Pettis Believes Conor McGregor Is True Champion

Anthony Pettis believes Conor McGregor is the true UFC lightweight champion heading into UFC 229.

Pettis is also booked for this event. He’ll take on former interim lightweight champ Tony Ferguson in the co-main event.

Pettis won his last bout in impressive fashion. He was able to score a submission win over Michael Chiesa to get back to his winning ways.

‘Showtime’s’ View At 155 Pounds

Pettis recently stated in an interview that he believes Nurmagomedov is the best fighter in the division.

But just because that is the case, he doesn’t believe Khabib is the true champion. He believes McGregor is and will prove that come fight night due to his striking power.

“Khabib (is the best lightweight),” Pettis said in Las Vegas (H/T to MMAJunkie). “I think Conor wins. Knockout. I don’t know what round, because Khabib gets hit. Conor has the weapon to put him away.”

Holes

Pettis brought up how everyone saw the holes in Nurmagomedov’s game in his most recent fight. “Showtime” believes McGregor will emerge on top because of them:

“We all saw holes in his striking game. We saw his last fight against Al (Iaquinta). We’ve seen how he performs. If he comes like that against Conor, it’s over. I’m sure he’s motivated and I’m sure Conor is motivated.”

The True Champion

Pettis stated that in his eyes, he sees McGregor as the true champion of the weight class. The reason for this is due to him scoring a second-round KO over Eddie Alvarez to win the title at UFC 205 in November 2016:

“I think Conor’s win over Eddie solidifies him as the champion,” Pettis said. “Khabib beat Al Iaquinta. That’s just facts. The belt is where it is. They had to do it for the business – they had to move it forward. But if it was true to the game, Conor would be the champion.”

The UFC 229 pay-per-view event is set to take place on Saturday, October 6, 2018, at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor has made an impact like very few before him, bringing waves of fans from his home nation of Ireland and also the much coveted casual market. Aside from Ronda Rousey, there are very few fighters in modern mixed martial arts whose fights are talked about by people who don’t even follow the sport. But one thing that’s clear about ‘The Notorious’ is that he has a very divided following. There are those that love to watch him talk trash outside the octagon and batter his opponents on fight night, and then there are legions that watch in the hopes he’ll catch a whooping himself.

As is the case with many heroes of the sport, McGregor is no stranger to hate, but his outspoken style, again almost identical to ‘Rowdy’ before UFC 193, has garnered the 145-pound champ an almost unprecedented amount of haters. So what are the reasons, and are they even justified? At the core of all this media frenzy is a man who fights for money, and at the same time provides entertainment, isn’t that the exact reason we follow combat sports?

Real life

So let’s look at this objectively, and we’ll provide evidence for both sides of the argument. So what do we know about Conor McGregor?

Well, first off let’s take a look at some of his activities outside the octagon. Here’s a brief snippet from an interview with ‘The Notorious,’ where he’s clearly choked up by talking about one of his fans who was terminally ill:

The young Irish boy by the name of Brendan Mcglone tragically passed away before being able to meet McGregor, whom he was a huge fan of. This shows a very human and empathetic side to the normally somewhat crude showman we see in the UFC. What’s not to admire about a man who’s charitable and caring side is so obviously more real than his antics on camera?

The truth on McGregor is that he grew up in a poor part of Ireland, and since making fame has bought his entire family new BMW’s and a house for his mother and father. He’s campaigned for numerous human rights groups, shown love to sick children, BUT…

Nate Diaz is still dropping bombs on Conor McGregor…

UFC lightweight and welterweight Nate Diaz stuck himself firmly on the map this past March 5, taking out the highly hyped UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor by submission. The UFC 196 had all the thrills and spills of a classic bout, including a fierce rivalry before hand. It was only 11 days in the making, as Diaz replaced the njured lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos, but the Stockton bad boy capitalized in a big way.

Many people felt the diverse striking attacks of McGregor would have Diaz shooting in for ground attacks and takedowns, but as it turned out, it was quite the opposite. The taller 209 native blasted ‘The Notorious’ with some hard shots, and for the first time in the Irishman’s UFC career, it looked like he may have been in trouble. Then cam, as predicted by Diaz, the takedown attempt from McGregor. It was as good as over from that point.

Diaz catapulted himself in to the limelight, and is currently relishing his well deserved attention and also a much increased disclosed pay check. Chatting with Mike Bohn for Rolling Stone Magazine, the younger of the infamous Diaz bros says he was close to knocking McGregor out, among some other cool topics:

“I lost plenty of decisions and I’ve never got a rematch to this day,” Diaz says. “So that’s crazy. Conor got worked over and now they’re saying rematch, which makes sense, I understand that. I just think it’s funny because it’s like, Jose Aldo didn’t get a rematch.”

“Those are both great fights, big fights, but those are both my brother’s fights. I’m not going to step on his shoes,” he says. “I’m not going to into his weight because everybody wants to see Nick vs. GSP or Nick vs. Lawler. I would like to fight for the Lightweight title. But if I did the [fighting at] 170 thing I would like them to work out the deal with Nick and I’ll take the leftovers.”

UFC 196 provided all the thrills and spills of any instant classic pay-per-view card, and featured a night of underdog victories in the main and co-main event. Miesha Tate stopped the short lived champion Holly Holm in her tracks, decimating the former boxing queen in the fifth round by choking her out cold. ‘Cupcake’ is now heavily linked to a trilogy match with ex-champ Ronda Rousey. But, let’s be honest, the main event was the true fight of the night, and it was born from a pairing only 11 days in the making.

Nate Diaz replaced injured lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos against Conor McGregor, fighting at 170 pounds on less than two weeks notice. After a back-and-forth first round, Diaz put the screws to the plans of ‘The Notorious’ with a stunning second round rear naked choke.

Diaz had put the middle finger up to the doubters and sent McGregor back down to his 145-pound title. In the space of less than ten minutes the Stockton bad boy had unravelled the Irish star, and exposed the glaring holes in his game. Many would claim that weight and cardio played a big role, but on fight night it’s all about pulling your best performance out of the bag, and a gracious McGregor would tip his hat to Diaz for his massive win.

So it turned out to be red panty night for Nate Diaz in every way, he banked big for the win, and took the biggest scalp of his career so far. With the loss for McGregor came a horde of reactions from MMA fans, fighters and media personalities across the world, some of them rather hilarious and crazy. But one particular former UFC champion literally lost his head when asked about the McGregor vs. Diaz fight.

UFC 196 stands to be the biggest event of 2016 so far with it’s star studded line up, and could potentially outshine any further PPV (pay-per-view) shows for the rest of the year. As well as the first title defense of women’s bantamweight champion Holly Holm against Miesha Tate, UFC 196 houses a lightweight title fight for the ages. Rafael dos Anjos will look to take out the visiting featherweight champion Conor McGregor in the main event.

As is typical for any fight featuring McGregor, the trash talk has been frequent and controversial. Kicking the action off at the recent UFC 196 presser, ‘The Notorious’ angered dos Anjos’ team mate Fabricio Werdum with his slanderous comments. Accusing the lightweight champ of betraying his home nation of Brazil, McGregor declared he’d behead RDA come March 5.

There was a bizarre and hilarious reaction by Fabricio Werdum to McGregor’s awards show rant yesterday, and now dos Anjos has been doing some talking for himself. Check out what he told The MMA Hour h/t MMAMania:

“This guy thinks because he dresses in expensive clothes and he drives nice cars that he has class, but he is classless. He has no class, he’s a lowlife. I can’t wait to go there. I’m not taking it personal, he’s an actor who is acting. Once I go there, I’m a straight guy, I don’t talk, I do. I’m going to go there and send him back home and to his division. He is going to have nightmares with the lightweight division for the rest of his life.”

RDA is not really known for his brash attitude, but it seems he has a severe disliking for McGregor. The subject then turned to how the fight will play out, as many believe the Irishman is the ‘superior’ striker:

“I don’t agree. I think I can beat this guy anywhere. If I fight a jiu-jitsu match with him I will beat him. If I fight a karate match with him, I will beat him. If I fight K-1 rules I will beat him. I think I can beat him anywhere. I am going to do my job, I am going to do what I’ve always done. I’m going to break him standing, he’s going to feel very bad after I hit him hard several times. And if I want, I will take him down and smash him a bit on the ground. I am not going into this fight saying I’m not going to stand with Conor because I don’t think he brings anything different to me. I’m a better fighter everywhere than him.”
