There was a whole bunch of questions being asked in the lead up to UFC 196, as UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor prepared to take on Rafael dos Anjos, in an attempt to make UFC history. The lightweight belt was on the line, and the Irish superstar was all set to duke it out with his Brazilian rival, until the injury bug struck again. With ‘RDA’ out, Nate Diaz was drafted in and the welterweight main event was made official on just 11 days notice.

The consensus opinion was that Diaz would be out of shape, and essentially feature as the bitter half of a pay-per-view squash match. How wrong the consensus was, as the Stockton native battered and submitted McGregor in the second round of a thrilling affair. We asked the question before UFC 196, what happens if Nate Diaz beats Conor McGregor? The obvious answer was that ‘The Notorious’ would be sent packing back to featherweight, to finally defend his belt, once again we were very wrong.

Less than two weeks after their first fight had transpired was the shocking news that the two fierce rivals had agreed to fight again, this time at the milestone UFC 200 card. Again at 170 pounds, the announcement came as both confusing and frustrating to many hardcore fans of mixed martial arts and the UFC. With the featherweight division put on hold yet again, it was clear that the McGregor effect was still a massively controlling factor for the promotion. And yet again, we ask the question, what happens if Nate Diaz destroys Conor McGregor (again)?

Here’s our highly speculative outcomes:

Back to featherweight

So the first and perhaps most obvious outcome of another loss to Nate Diaz would be that Conor McGregor would head back to the 145-pound division to defend his belt. The championship he won from Jose Aldo at UFC 194 is begging to be once again legitimized, but let’s not overlook how rarely it was defended back when ‘Scarface’ was on top. Of course with Aldo now a contender, and also Frankie Edgar screaming for a crack at the whip, it’s no wonder some fans are in disarray at the current booking of Diaz vs. McGregor 2.

It’s the rematch nobody expected, but UFC 200 is looking like the place it’ll go down…

Well, who expected to see this bombshell dropped this week? Not even two weeks have passed since Nate Diaz dispatched Conor McGregor in the UFC 196 main event, and already the promotion is working to book the rematch at UFC 200. The Stockton bad boy Diaz submitted McGregor after a thrilling slugfest at the March 5 pay-per-view extravaganza, exposing the holes in the Irish boxer’s game both on the feet and on the canvas. McGregor, it seemed, had been temporarily debunked.

With the hype surrounding ‘The Notorious’ remaining steadfast due to the fight being at welterweight, it looked as though he was being sent back to featherweight to defend the title that had been put on hold by his quest for two belts. After Rafael dos Anjos was injured and removed from the UFC 196 card, the reason the fight with Diaz was at welterweight was because Nate refused to cut down to lightweight on just 11 days notice.

So a highly unnecessary yet entertaining bout was born at the floating weight of 170 pounds, and fair play to McGregor for taking the loss on the chin in the post fight stages. But then the news broke just last night that the UFC was looking to book the rematch at their next landmark PPV show, and at welterweight too. The news was met with confusion, anticipation, and outrage from various corners of the MMA community, as many believed and hoped that the featherweight title would once again become active.

We can think of five reasons that the UFC shoud have avoided Conor McGregor vs. Nate Diaz 2.

Nate Diaz is still dropping bombs on Conor McGregor…

UFC lightweight and welterweight Nate Diaz stuck himself firmly on the map this past March 5, taking out the highly hyped UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor by submission. The UFC 196 had all the thrills and spills of a classic bout, including a fierce rivalry before hand. It was only 11 days in the making, as Diaz replaced the njured lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos, but the Stockton bad boy capitalized in a big way.

Many people felt the diverse striking attacks of McGregor would have Diaz shooting in for ground attacks and takedowns, but as it turned out, it was quite the opposite. The taller 209 native blasted ‘The Notorious’ with some hard shots, and for the first time in the Irishman’s UFC career, it looked like he may have been in trouble. Then cam, as predicted by Diaz, the takedown attempt from McGregor. It was as good as over from that point.

Diaz catapulted himself in to the limelight, and is currently relishing his well deserved attention and also a much increased disclosed pay check. Chatting with Mike Bohn for Rolling Stone Magazine, the younger of the infamous Diaz bros says he was close to knocking McGregor out, among some other cool topics:

“I lost plenty of decisions and I’ve never got a rematch to this day,” Diaz says. “So that’s crazy. Conor got worked over and now they’re saying rematch, which makes sense, I understand that. I just think it’s funny because it’s like, Jose Aldo didn’t get a rematch.”

“Those are both great fights, big fights, but those are both my brother’s fights. I’m not going to step on his shoes,” he says. “I’m not going to into his weight because everybody wants to see Nick vs. GSP or Nick vs. Lawler. I would like to fight for the Lightweight title. But if I did the [fighting at] 170 thing I would like them to work out the deal with Nick and I’ll take the leftovers.”

For those of you that thought the heated rivalry between Nate Diaz and Conor McGregor was still burning, this recent interview might change your mind. We are just 11 days removed from the madness of UFC 196, and the blockbuster pay-per-view card from Las Vegas, Nevada is still making front page news. The UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor faced Nate Diaz in the main event of the evening, and it was more spectacular than any of us could’ve imagined.

To the surprise of many of ‘The Notorious” fan base, the Irish boxer was not able to take Diaz out in the first round as he’d predicted. The chin of the Stockton Jiu Jitsu ace proved steadfast, and by round two it was clear who was going home with the victory. For the first time in McGregor’s UFC career, he was in serious trouble, and Diaz’s combinations began clipping the jaw on a regular basis.

As UFC commentator Mike Goldberg might say, Diaz smelled the opening, and he wasn’t going to let McGregor off the hook. All the trash talk and mentions of ‘snitches in Stockton’ had clearly put wind in the sails of Diaz, and it wasn’t long before his own predictions began to come true. Everyone becomes a wrestler once they get hit, and McGregor did just that, shooting in for an ill fated takedown on the superior grappler. This marked the end of the fight before it had even happened.

The subsequent ground and pound from the mount, attempt to escape by McGregor, and Diaz sinking in the rear naked choke from the back was elementary.

For once it was Conor McGregor on the receiving end of the taunts inside the octagon, he was a broken man, and Nate Diaz’s corner were letting him know this throughout the final moments of the fight. As the featherweight champion tapped out, it was clear that welterweight was not the place for him, and that Diaz’s Jiu Jitsu was simply superb. We also saw a huge backlash in the form of hateful memes and a strange scrutiny of McGregor for tapping out rather than going to sleep.

Remember when former UFC light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones and current boss Daniel Cormier shared one of the most heated rivalries in MMA history? The lead up to their eventual UFC 182 fight was filled with crazy brawls and intense face offs, but remember they had six months to fill, and the latest beef between Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz has only had 12 days to brew. In that time, ‘The Notorious’ and the bad boy from Stockton have done a bang up job.

The first UFC 196 presser that happened the day after the fight’s announcement was fun to watch, nothing too extreme, but it got our interest. Then came the second presser, which went down last night (Thursday March 3, 2016). The two squared off and very nearly got in to an all out scrap, then the 209 massive in Jake Shields, Nick Diaz and many others rushed the stage, and for a moment there were flashbacks to the infamous UFC 178 brawl between DC and Jones. All settled, but it was far from over.

After the strange interviews with Diaz earlier this week, it seemed that perhaps the normally outspoken grappler was already feeling the strain of this fight. He even complimented McGregor, stating he felt the Irish boxer could do well at welterweight. A confused Karyn Bryant had to remind Nate that this was his next opponent they were discussing, it was truly bizarre and out of character.

Anyway, the UFC, sensing that perhaps the rivalry was beginning to fall out of context, set up another Jones/Cormier type situation. Separating McGregor and Diaz but giving them a split screen live chat with Jay & Dan of FOX Sports, the promotion intended on getting some serious trash talk across the airwaves and in to our welcoming eyeballs and ears.

Possibly even the UFC could not have foreseen what happened, which was potentially the greatest interview in all combat sports history.

UFC lightweigh/welterweight Nate Diaz has been around the block and has finally come full circle with the biggest fight of his career. It comes at the cost of Rafael dos Anjos vs. Conor McGregor though, as the original UFC 196 main event was snubbed due to the lightweight champion breaking his foot. In stepped Diaz, and the rivalry between the two biggest trash talkers in MMA took centre stage.

As it turns out, the beef between the two is rather entertaining, especially considering Diaz’s explicit post fight rant towards ‘The Notorious’ after the win over Michael Johnson. But there’s a lingering question, or two part quandary if you will, firstly is Nate going to be in shape, and secondly how does he plan on beating the outspoken and talented Irish striker?

Luckily for us, we have an insight in to both questions, courtesy of the Instagram accounts of Sean Cunningham of abc 10 news, and also a random dude.

Now, if you’ve been following the beef between McGregor and Diaz, you’ll know that photos of a rather soft looking Diaz emerged in the recent days. Taking the fight on 12 days notice is risky for any fighter, but to come in out of shape could prove extremely costly.
