Michael Chiesa has filed a civil lawsuit against former UFC lightweight and featherweight champion Conor McGregor after the Irish superstar started a melee in Brooklyn, New York, earlier this year.

It was reported by TMZ that the UFC lightweight star has filed a civil lawsuit against McGregor as he allegedly suffered damages due to McGregor’s infamous bus attack. The lawsuit states that Chiesa suffered “serious personal, economic, and other injury,” as well as “severe emotional distress, mental trauma, and/or bodily harm.”

It also accuses McGregor of negligence, assault, battery and infliction of emotional distress. What’s interesting is the fact that Chiesa has listed Barclays Center as a defendant, alleging the facility failed to take “proper security measures to protect the plaintiff and other patrons.” The lawsuit was filed on Monday in Brooklyn.

According to court documents, it doesn’t state exactly how much money Chiesa is looking to get but did note that he wants relief for compensation lost, including “lost opportunities.”

Back in April during fight week of the UFC 223 pay-per-view event, McGregor and several members of his entourage decided to fly from Ireland to Brooklyn, New York to get revenge on current lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov. It all started once the UFC lightweight champion got into an argument with McGregor’s training partner, Artem Lobov, earlier that week.

This led to McGregor attacking the fighter bus that had Nurmagomedov on and he was arrested as a result, then was charged with three counts of assault and one count of criminal mischief.

All felony counts were dismissed as McGregor accepted the deal that is a guilty of disorderly conduct charge, which will see him do five days of community service, anger management classes and three orders of protection against Ray Borg, Jason Ledvetter, and Chiesa.

Chiesa and Anthony Pettis were slated to fight each other at the UFC 223 pay-per-view event in April in Brooklyn, NY. However, the bout got scrapped once Chiesa suffered facial lacerations due to this bus attack. They did the fight at the UFC 226 event where Chiesa lost by submission.

Michael Chiesa Claims He Almost Died From Botched UFC 226 Weight Cut

Michael Chiesa pushed himself to the limit in his UFC 226 weight cut.

The UFC can not institute the 165-pound weight class soon enough.

Michael “Maverick” Chiesa stepped on the scale for the UFC 226 weigh-ins last Friday (July 6, 2018) weighing 157.5-pounds, 1.5-pounds more than the lightweight non-title fight limit. As a result, before his main card bout with Anthony “Showtime” Pettis, Chiesa said he would be moving up to 170 pounds, win or lose.

Chiesa would go on to lose his second straight fight at UFC 226 when Pettis caught the TUF winner in a fight-ending triangle choke. But upon further review, losing the fight was perhaps a secondary concern for Chiesa, who realistically put his health in danger by attempting to cut so much weight.

Speaking with ESPN’s Ariel Helwani earlier today, Chiesa would detail just how difficult this weight cut was for him.

“I can’t emphasize this enough, Ariel: I seriously thought I was going to die,” Chiesa said. “Going through the first part of my weight cut, on Thursday, I really thought I was going to kill myself and I’m not exaggerating in the slightest.”

Chiesa has been dealing with an on again off again type foot injury, but he insisted his nagging injury had nothing to do with his performance, rather, he just pushed his body to the limit.

“Ultimately my body had nothing to give,” he said. “When you can’t do road work for a week-and-a-half, that’s really hard on your weight cut. I came into fight week at 175 pounds, and usually I come into fight week at 169, 168 pounds. It was just too much for my body to handle.”

“We cut weight for eight hours. We cut for four hours on Thursday night and I was up at 5 a.m. cutting weight on the day of weigh-ins [Friday] and my body had nothing more to give. I’m not exaggerating: I thought I was going to die. In the middle of the night before the Friday weigh-ins, I woke up and started having a panic attack. I broke down and started crying and was like, ‘I think I’m going to die.’

A dejected Chiesa would state he is moving up to 170-pounds, after some time to reflect “Maverick” isn’t sure where he will be competing moving forward.

“I was already in talks with people around me. Win or lose, after this fight, I think I want to go up,” he said. “A lot of people are trying to steer me to 170 pounds. I’m a big guy; people don’t realize that. There’s only one guy at 170 that’s bigger than me, and that’s Darren Till. I’m not a small guy. I can get up to 205 pounds and be athletic and be in shape.”

The talk of adding more weight classes continues to be a hot-button topic in the UFC. Chiesa is the latest in a long line of high-level fighters that would welcome the 165-pound class with open arms.

“If [the 165-pound weight class] happens, it happens. If it does, I welcome it with open arms. I’m a big advocate for it. If they add 165 pounds, it would be heaven sent. It would be a blessing to a lot of us guys.”

Michael Chiesa: Conor McGregor Cost Me A Potential Title Shot

UFC lightweight Michael Chiesa was one of several fighters who were injured during Conor McGregor’s wild bus attack just days before UFC 223. “The Notorious” and his band of goons flew to New York City and showed up at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn to confront Khabib Nurmagomedov, but Chiesa got caught in the crossfire.

The cuts to Chiesa’s face were so severe that he was pulled from his fight against former lightweight champion Anthony Pettis, a win over whom would have placed him right at the top of the division. Chiesa vented on Thursday about the opportunities that McGregor’s antics cost him:

“I don’t really got a lot to say to the guy. I lost a title shot. I have proof. I was the highest-ranked guy on the card. I would have stepped in to fight Khabib at the drop of a dime. I’ve always loved the fight with Khabib. Bless his heart, he’s a cool ass guy. But this is a sport and I’ve always liked the way I matched up against him and I got f*cked out of that opportunity. I don’t really have too many kind things to say to [McGregor]. You work your whole life for those kinds of opportunities. Do I want mine on short order? No, I’d love a training camp. Like I said, if they walk in the door now and say, ‘Hey, do you want to fight for the title in the next 10 minutes?’ I’m out the door, I’m warming up, I’m ready to go.

“To lose the opportunity, that’s tough. You know how this sport works, guys. Opportunities like that don’t come along. I could strike along 15 wins in a row and still not get a title shot and I lost my opportunity and my dream. I hope that I’m gonna fight my ass off to earn it back starting on July 7 against Anthony Pettis. But yeah, tough pill to swallow.”

McGregor was arrested shortly thereafter and was charged with assault. The Irishman has been coming back and forth from court ever since.

Meanwhile, Chiesa will get his chance to take on a former champ in Pettis once again at UFC 226 in July.

We now know when the UFC plans to book Anthony Pettis vs. Michael Chiesa again.

If you recall, these fighters were slated to fight each other at the UFC 223 pay-per-view event last month in Brooklyn, NY.

However, the bout got scrapped once Chiesa suffered facial lacerations when former UFC featherweight and lightweight champ Conor McGregor decided to throw a dolly through the window of a van while trying to get to Khabib Nurmagomedov.

According to a report by MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani, the promotion plans to have these lightweight contenders fight at the upcoming UFC 226 pay-per-view event.

Chiesa (14-3) is looking to get back into the win column as he suffered a submission loss to Kevin Lee last June, which ended up snapping a three-fight win streak.

Pettis (20-7) has been on a roller coaster ride over his last few bouts. Since dropping the lightweight title to Rafael Dos Anjos back in March of 2015, he has suffered four losses in six fights.

Part of that lack of success includes a stint in the featherweight division. He picked up a win at featherweight before an interim title bout with Max Holloway at UFC 206.

However, Pettis lost that bout and went back to lightweight. He then picked up a unanimous-decision win over Jim Miller at UFC 213.

Pettis faced Dustin Poirier on November 11, 2017 at UFC Fight Night 120 but lost the fight after tapping out due to a broken rib in the third round, although it was announced as a TKO win.

UFC 226 is set to take place on Saturday, July 6, 2018, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The main card will air on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET while the preliminary card will air on FOX Sports 1 at 8 p.m. ET and the promotion’s streaming service, UFC Fight Pass.

Here is the updated card for the upcoming pay-per-view event:

Champ Stipe Miocic vs. Daniel Cormier – for heavyweight title
Champ Max Holloway vs. Brian Ortega – for featherweight title
Raphael Assuncao vs. Rob Font
Khalil Rountree vs. Gokhan Saki
Yancy Medeiros vs. Mike Perry
Paulo Costa vs. Uriah Hall
Derrick Lewis vs. Francis Ngannou
Anthony Pettis vs. Michael Chiesa
