Former two-weight world champion, ‘The Notorious’ Conor McGregor has re-entered the UFC’s official welterweight rankings at #15, following the recent release of former lightweight champion, Anthony ‘Showtime’ Pettis.

Cracking the 170-pound top-fifteen, McGregor also leapfrogged former interim 155-pound titleholder, Tony ‘El Cucuy’ Ferguson into the #4 spot at lightweight following the latter’s recent UFC 256 unanimous decision loss to the #3 rated, Charles ‘Do Bronx’ Oliveira. Canadian outlet, TSN was first to report the updated UFC rankings.

Slated to headline UFC 256 on January 23 from the Flash Forum on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi UAE, McGregor rematches one-time foe, former interim titleholder, Dustin ‘The Diamond’ Poirier with stakes higher than even given the current lie of the lightweight land.

Making his first Octagon appearance in just over a year, the Dubliner last made the walk at UFC 246 in January this year, scoring a forty-second knockout victory over veteran one-time title chaser, Donald ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone in a welterweight main event. The return marked the 32-year-old’s first appearance since a UFC 229 loss to Khabib ‘The Eagle’ Nurmagomedov.

Featuring three-times at 170-pounds during his seven-year Octagon stint, McGregor is 2-1 at the weight class, dropping his divisional debut against Nate Diaz at UFC 196 before avenging his first promotional loss at UFC 202 in August of 2016.

Sitting at #4 in the lightweight ranks, McGregor has only appeared at 155-pounds on two occasions and holds a 1-1 record. Prior to his neck crank loss to the above mentioned, Khabib — the Straight Blast Gym mainstay headlined UFC 205 in November of 2016 against then-champion, Eddie ‘The Underground King’ Alvarez — where he nabbed the lightweight championship to become the promotion’s first two-weight world champion held simultaneously.

After rumblings during the initial stages of the Poirier vs. McGregor II negotiations suggested the pairing had a decent possibility of taking place at 170-pounds, UFC president Dana White maintained the re-run made no sense at that weight, declaring it would take place at lightweight instead, as the pair attempt to make inroads to their second undisputed title challenges.

Earlier today former UFC Lightweight champion Anthony Pettis announced his departure from the UFC after being with the organization for almost 12 years.

While nothing bas been announced on his part regarding a potential new home to continue his career, Bellator president Scott Coker shared that he would be willing to speak to Pettis.

Speaking to MMA Junkie, Coker explained that it would ultimately come down to Pettis’s value to the company.

“I didn’t know he was a free agent, I’m sure my guys are already talking to their camps and we’ll have a conversation,” Coker said to MMA Junkie. “Level is sometimes based on what is the business deal because there has to be a certain value there based on the price, and really that’s what it comes down to is the value worth what we think of the fights we can put together for him, and really it’s like how much does he have left in the gas tank? But we’ll definitely have that conversation, and usually, we have that conversation with every free agent, whether we sign them or not. We’ll probably do the same thing with Pettis if we haven’t already done it.”

Pettis is currently sitting on a two fight win streak in the Welterweight division while he has also fought at both Lightweight and Featherweight.

When MMA Junkie’s Mike Bohn proposed a matchup between him and Bellator star Michael Venom Page, Coker seemed onboard with the idea.

“That would be a lot of fun,” Coker said to MMA Junkie. “That would be amazing. We’ll see. There’s only so many slots on TV for us. We’ll be having 22 to 26 fight’s (Next Year), and it’ll all be mapped out sometime in the next three weeks and we’ll figure it out. We’ll have a conversation and see where it goes.”

Following his most recent victory Pettis hinted at a return to the Lightweight division where he had formerly been a champion, however, a move in organization could provide a reason to remain at Welterweight.

After a victory this past weekend at UFC Vegas 17 to fulfill his contracted fights, former Lightweight champion Anthony “Showtime” Pettis has decided to part ways with the UFC.

The former WEC and UFC champion posted a letter to the UFC from himself thanking them for his time in the organization and what they were able to achieve together.

“Dana- thank you for everything you have done for me. I was just a kid from the south side of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, with a big dream. You helped me turn that dream into a reality. THANKYOU!!!”

With his win, this past Saturday Pettis was currently on a two-fight winning streak following a defeat to Nate Diaz as UFC 241 and a subsequent defeat to Diego Pereira at UFC 246.

As he announced his departure he also announced that he will be exploring free agency, hinting that he is yet to find the right organization to continue his career.

Earlier this year his younger brother Sergio Pettis made the move from the UFC to Bellator to take part in their Bantamweight division. Since then he has gone on to debut and successfully earns his first win in the organization.

Earning the title at lightweight, Pettis also fought at both Featherweight and Welterweight with varying levels of success, however, following his latest victory he shared that he planned to move back down to Lightweight where he had claimed the title before as he felt as though this was the correct weight class for him.

Upon moving up into the Welterweight division Pettis was able to secure a highlight-reel knockout of top contender Stephen Thompson setting up a super fight with Nate Diaz. Following the two losses, Pettis remained at Welterweight taking on Donald Cerrone and Alex Morono emerging victorious both times by decision.
