Anthony Johnson says UFC light heavyweight champ Daniel Cormier is his own biggest cheerleader.

The dominant No. 1-ranked slugger offered that opinionahead of his main event title bout against ‘DC’ this weekend (Sat. April 8, 2017). The pair will rematch with the coveted 205-pound title on the line once again in the main event of UFC 210 live on pay-per-view (PPV) from the KeyBank Center in Buffalo, New York.

Cormier threw a few verbal shots his challenger’s way during the UFC 210 media conference call last week, calling the knockout artist out for not capitalizing on the opportunity to beat him during their initial meeting at UFC 187 back in May of 2015. The then-vacant title was on the line after division kingpin Jon Jones was forced to drop the strap due to issues out-of-competition, and Cormier would become the new division’s king after securing a third round submission over ‘Rumble.’

During a recent interview with FOX Sports, Johnson got the opportunity to respond to Cormier’s recent trash talk where he said ‘Rumble’ was only dangerous for the first ‘seven minutes,’ calling the former Olympian ‘his own biggest cheerleader’:

“DC will always talk. I just found out he just talks. I kind of figured it out. He talks just to hear himself talk,” Johnson said. “I know he wants to be that guy that’s a big time promoter and all this other stuff, but I think he’s his own biggest cheerleader and his worst promoter for sure.

“People don’t believe half the [expletive] he says.”

Johnson also offered his two cents in regards to Cormier’s latest Octagon performances against Alexander Gustafsson and Anderson Silva. Despite putting on a great performance against Gustafsson in their UFC 192 main event title bout, ‘Rumble’ feels like the Swede should’ve walked out of Houston as champ:

“He fought how DC fights,” Johnson said. “His usual grinding that’s just what he does. He’ll land a couple punches and then try to take you down and try to beat you up on the ground and wear you out. That’s usually how he does it.

“With [Gustafsson], that was an extremely close fight. I thought Gus won honestly. This is the second time I thought Gus won the title so maybe my judgment is kind of off.”

‘Rumble’ also threw shots at Cormier for his performance against Anderson Silva at UFC 200 this past Summer, who didn’t have any training for the bout coming in on just two day’s notice:

“The thing with Anderson [Silva], I thought DC fought safe to a degree. He fought safe but then he came up looking like [expletive],” Johnson said. “It wasn’t his best performance. But like he said, that was the easiest fight of his career so if that was the easiest fight of your career then all right then.

“If that’s what you look like in the easiest fight of your career then you’re definitely going to have a hard time with me.”

Regardless of Cormier’s past performances, Johnson is fully ready to capitalize on his opportunity to sit atop the 205-pound division throne, and he’s prepared to go out on his shield to do so:

“It comes to a point where you get tired of talking. I’m not DC. I don’t want to do all this talking to make myself look like Billy Bad Ass. I go in and I fight and I do my best, win or lose,” Johnson said. “That’s just what it is with me. I don’t go in there half-assing. Either I’m going out on my shield or you’re going out on your shield. That’s just what it is.

“I go out there and fight. I see an opening, I take it. You make a mistake, I take it.”

Jon Jones is set to step back into the spotlight.

Jones once reigned over the 205-pound division after defeating ‘Shogun’ Rua in 2011 for the division’s title. After racking up eight straight successful title defenses Jones was all set to attempt his ninth against knockout artist Anthony ‘Rumble’ Johnson, when a hit-and-run incident forced him out of the bout and needing to handle his newfound legal issues.

Rival Daniel Cormier would go on to step in for Jones and defeat Johnson via submission to win the vacated light heavyweight throne, while Jones made his Octagon return in April of last year against Ovince Saint Preux. ‘Bones’ won the bout via unanimous decision.

He was all set to attempt to reclaim his title from ‘DC’ in the main event of UFC 200 this past July, however, Jones was flagged by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) days out from the bout after testing positive for banned substances. Jones was handed a one-year suspension and is expected to challenge the winner of this weekend’s (Sat. April 8, 2017) UFC 210 pay-per-view (PPV) title bout between Cormier and Johnson.

MMA Junkie’s Mike Bohn reports that Jones is expected to speak to media this weekend in Buffalo ahead of the title bout:

Upon his return, how do you think Jones will fare against Cormier a second time around? Or if ‘Rumble’ continues to lay waste to the 205-pound division, how will ‘Bones’ deal with the former Blackzillian’s ridiculous power?

Henri Hooft’s Florida-based Combat Club MMA has certainly seen its fair share of drama following a highly-publicized split that saw them absorb many of the former Blackzilians, and now it looks like the growing team has potentially added a high-profile name to their roster.

Following his own split from Blackzilians rival American Top Team (ATT), former UFC welterweight champion was recently spotted sparring at Combat Club. The brutalizing fan favorite has been teasing a return from a hiatus he took after Tyron Woodley knocked him out in the first round of their headliner at last July’s UFC 201.

Lawler is from Iowa but has lived in Florida for some time now, making the choice a logical one coupled with Hooft’s extensive kickboxing background and “Ruthless’” all-out style. If it is indeed true that the former champion has joined Combat Club on more than a temporary basis, he’ll train with current light heavyweight title challenger Anthony “Rumble” Johnson, former light heavyweight champion Rashad Evans, and top-ranked lightweight Michael Johnson.

Daniel Cormier: Anthony Johnson’s Fall Will Mimic Mike Tyson’s

Daniel Cormier is prepared to stand-and-bang with Anthony Johnson.

‘DC’ will be defending his light heavyweight title against No. 1-ranked contender ‘Rumble’ Johnson in the main event of UFC 210 from Buffalo, New York on April 8th. The pair initially met at UFC 187 for the then-vacant 205-pound title, in which Cormier ate some heavy shots from Johnson before taking the Blackzillian’s back and submitting him via rear-naked choke.

Despite that Cormier was sent flying across the Octagon at one point in the contest from one of Johnson’s strikes, Cormier has vowed to stand in the pocket and trade with the knockout artist. ‘DC’ joined The MMA Hour earlier today (Mon. February 6, 2017) to discuss the match-up, and claims that come fight night he’ll continue to press forward on the hard-swinging title challenger (quotes via MMA Mania):

“Before we fought he said, ‘I can knock him out when I decide to knock him out.’ He said, ‘Daniel knows what’s coming to him, I’m going to knock him out.’ Well what happens when you don’t knock me out? What happens if you hit me with your best shot and I continue to press forward and I continue to engage you and stay in your face the entire time? What happens then?

“You saw what happened; he rolled over, gave me his neck and let me choke him out so he can get out of the Octagon. People can believe everything they want. I love Mike Tyson, I was a fan just like everyone else, but the moment someone stood up to him, he didn’t do so well. And that’s the same thing with Anthony Johnson, the guy is a bully who wants to intimidate you. Dominate you and knock you out. But what happens, when you don’t knock somebody out? What happens?”

After having their first rematch fall out from UFC 206 last year due to Cormier tearing a adductor tendon, the pair of top 205-pounders will get their opportunity to throw down yet again this April. How do you see the rematch between Cormier and Johnson going?

Anthony Johnson Eying ‘Gangster’ Misha Cirkunov

‘Rumble’ has his eyes on a top prospect at 205 pounds, and their name isn’t Jon Jones or Daniel Cormier.

Anthony Johnson has sat at the No. 1-ranked position in the UFC’s light heavyweight rankings for quite some time now, and will once again challenge for the division’s throne when he takes on champion Daniel Cormier in the main event of UFC 210 on April 8th. The pair previously met for the then-vacated title in the main event of UFC 187 in 2015, where ‘DC’ emerged victorious with a third round rear-naked choke.

The winner of the upcoming title bout in April is expected to welcome former 205-pound kingpin Jon Jones back to the Octagon, who is currently serving a one-year suspension for violating the United States Anti-Doping Agency’s (USADA) anti-doping policy.

Johnson recently joined The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani (quotes via MMA Fighting) and explained that while he believes Jones should be next in line for a crack at the light heavyweight title, he is keeping his eye on a few contenders outside of Jones and Cormier; sounding especially interested in one in particular:

“He should be (next). I think he still should be,” Johnson said.

“A lot of guys in the weight class have been putting in good work,” Johnson said. “Jimi Manuwa, he just came out of a fight with OSP and knocked him out. That was a clean knockout on his part. Who else is out there? Gus is still out there. I wouldn’t be surprised if they tried to make Gus and Jon fight again, just to see if you have a different result. So there’s a couple of guys up there who definitely have my attention.

“I think, besides DC, the one guy that has my attention is, what’s him name, Misha (Cirkunov). That dude is a beast,” Johnson continued. “He’s a beast, man. I like his style, and he’s built like a brick house. I think his ass is gangster. I don’t think he’s close, but he’s definitely somebody you’ve got to watch out for.”

Cirkunov is currently undefeated in his UFC tenure after having won all four of his contests under the promotion’s banner via finish. With one knockout win followed by three submission victories, the 29-year-old Russian contender has been raising eyebrows as of late in addition to gaining the attention of one of the baddest men at 205 pounds.

The light heavyweight prospect is only one of a few who have begun to come out of the woodwork after what used to be considered stale competition at 205 pounds for a period of time. Now that some fresh meat is beginning to make its way to the division Johnson is excited to potentially share the Octagon with the young bucks down the road:

“It did (stall out for awhile), but now the competition is getting thick again,” Johnson said. “And I’m excited about it.”

Since his loss to Cormier, ‘Rumble’ has wreaked havoc on the 205-pound weight class with his frightening striking power, leaving a trail of bodies in his path who have been left unconscious on the Octagon floor after eating one of his monstrous punches. The rejuvenated Blackzillian product is ready to give it a go at UFC gold once again, with high hopes that he can inflict the same fate upon ‘DC’ as his previous three opponents.

How do you see the rematch between Cormier and ‘Rumble’ going down?

Jon Jones will most likely challenge for the 205-pound title upon his return.

We noted that UFC President Dana White was recently a guest on the UFC Unfiltered podcast with Matt Sera and Jim Norton (quotes via FOX Sports), and he had quite a bit to say. One subject White touched on was who former light heavyweight king Jon Jones will take on upon his return from suspension.

Jones was suspended for one year by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) after testing positive for clomiphene and Letrozole (anti-estrogen drugs), and was removed from his scheduled title unification bout with Daniel Cormier just days away from UFC 200. Jones’ suspension is set to be lifted in July, and White says he will most likely be taking on the winner of the upcoming title bout between Cormier and No. 1-ranked Anthony ‘Rumble’ Johnson:

“Jon Jones is supposed to return around July so the timing is perfect. I haven’t talked to him. I haven’t talked to Jon Jones since the whole incident (at UFC 200),” White said.

“Depending on where Jon’s head is and where he thinks he is, I would assume he would come right back and try to get his title back.”

While some may believe Jones is in need of a ‘tune-up fight’ before stepping right back into the Octagon with the likes of ‘DC’ or ‘Rumble’, White has a firm stance against ‘tune-up fights’ for someone that’s a top five competitor in the world:

“If you’re going to go in there and give it, at least go in and try to get your belt back,” White said. “It’s like everyone was saying Ronda (Rousey) should have had a tune up (fight). There are no tune-up fights.

“When you break into the top five in the world, everybody’s nasty. What you don’t want to do is lose to somebody (ranked) 8, 9, 10. It knocks you right out of the top 10 and it doesn’t make sense.”

What are your thoughts? Do you think Jones is in need of a tune-up fight when he returns? Or is ‘Bones’ ready to jump right in against either Cormier or Johnson to reclaim his title?
