Former undisputed light heavyweight championship challenger, Anthony Smith has responded to claims from former two-time bantamweight best, T.J. Dillashaw that he will never clinch an Octagon crown, labelling the latter a “juicehead”.

Smith, the current number eleven ranked light heavyweight contender, has been sidelined since he featured at UFC 303 just last month, dropping a short-notice unanimous decision loss against Roman Dolidze.

Seeing his record drop to 38-20 as a result, Nebraska veteran, Smith admitted the loss likely put the final nail in the proverbial coffin of his search for a UFC crown, something the above-mentioned, Dillashaw echoed – describing him as a “quitter”.

And replying to Dillashaw’s comments, Smith claimed he had no idea why the Angels Camp veteran had chose to make personal remarks about him, before pointing to his prior two-year suspension for EPO use, calling him a “juicehead”.

“If he (T.J. Dillashaw) doesn’t believe I’ll ever be champion, that’s totally fine, that’s 100% fine, this’s his opinion,” Anthony Smith told Believe You Me. “It was the talking about, ‘He must’ve given himself that nickname’ and that I’m a ‘quitter’ and I ‘give up’, the very personal disrespect part of it… Long story short, I don’t know what his problem with me is.”

“Like anybody who has been accused of cheating their entire career and then caught taking performance-enhancing drugs and been a juicehead his entire career and is not in the testing pool so we all know exactly what he’s doing,” Anthony Smith continued. “I don’t know why I would take the opinion of him to heart.”

Confirming he would not be making good on a rumored return to action, Dillashaw revealed he still cannot lift his arm over his head following a slew of major surgical procedures in order to address shoulder injuries.

Former two-time bantamweight champion, T.J. Dillashaw has ripped into the title aspirations of veteran light heavyweight contender, Anthony Smith, claiming the Nebraska veteran will never land himself a championship under the banner of the UFC.

Dillashaw, a former two-time undisputed bantamweight titleholder, himself called time on his storied mixed martial arts career back in 2022, dropping a second round TKO loss to fellow former divisional champion, Aljamain Sterling in a dominant defeat in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

As for Smith, the former title challenger at 205lbs failed to mount the challenge of Georgian contender, Roman Dolidze in their short-notice clash at UFC 303 at the end of last month, rebounding to the losing enclosure in a unanimous decision loss.

T.J. Dillashaw doubts Anthony Smith ever lands UFC gold

Sharing his thoughts on the much-scrutinized championship aspirations of veteran perennial contender, Smith, Angels Camp veteran, Dillashaw claimed the former would never touch UFC gold, before speculating he always “gives up” on himself.

“No, never,” T.J. Dillashaw replied on the JAXXON Podcast when asked if Anthony Smith could become champion. “Dude, he’s just not good enough. Okay, so, he gives up. Did he give himself that nickname [Lionheart] or what? He gives up in there.”

“The second round [at UFC 303], he doesn’t even try to f*cking stand up,” T.J. Dillashaw explained. “Roman’s (Dolidze) on his back, he doesn’t even try to stand up. I don’t give a sh*t, I’m fighting until I die, dog. I’m fighting with one arm, I’m doing whatever I can.”

And providing an update on his own fighting future amid links to a potential return from injury to make one final title siege, Dillashaw confirmed he would not be making a comeback to the UFC, amid complications from multiple shoulder surgeries.

“I can’t even raise my arm up in the air yet,” T.J. Dillashaw explained. “I don’t ever know if my shoulder is ever going to be the same again. It’s f*cking depressing. As a competitor, you have to be delusionally optimistic, but that’s also what got me in this position, too. It’s just gotten worse and worse from each surgery.”

Anthony Smith cultivates 'Cool Relationship' with Alex Pereira during UFC 303 fight week: 'We have no problem'

Everything is all good between Anthony Smith and Alex Pereira.

Over the last year, ‘Lionheart’ found himself in an unexpected feud with the light heavyweight champion. It all seemingly began when ‘Poatan’ took exception to Smith’s commentary during his fights, claiming the one-time title challenger never gave him credit for his success from the moment he first stepped inside the Octagon.

“The issue is, he has his job with the UFC commentating,” Pereira said on The MMA Hour in 2023. “He’s got to do what he’s got to do, but we feel that since the beginning, he gives me no credit.”

Despite Pereira’s comments generating a slew of headlines, Smith insisted that there was no beef between himself and the two-division titleholder.

“It’s weird,” Smith told Helwani during his own MMA Hour appearance. “I don’t come at him. I’ve never come for him like that. Of course, you have the title belt in my division, so when people say, ‘What’s your goal?’ I want to fight the champion. I want to fight Alex Pereira. But he goes out of his way to pick at me, which is fine. It doesn’t bother me, I think it’s awesome actually, it’s kind of a lot of fun because he has a sense of humor.”

Anthony Smith

‘Lionheart’ echoed a similar sentiment during a recent episode of the Believe You Me podcast with Michael Bisping, revealing that the two fighters were nothing but cordial with one another after sharing the stage at UFC 303 in Las Vegas.

“Alex and I have this very cool relationship,” Smith said. “I think it’s very, very cool what we have going on. … We’re very, I think just competitive in general, but when we’re in person, I thought it was so cool how we have this like—we have a lot of respect for each other. Because it’s not awkward in person. It’s a head nod acknowledgment. We don’t talk or shake hands or anything like that, but we have no problem standing right next to each other in a room.

“I think it’s cool how we have this competitive thing. His team has always been so cool to me before—Glover [Teixeira] and his wife have always been super cool to me. It’s always been an embrace when we see each other. A respectful little chit-chat. Everyone acknowledges me. They’re still super kind to me. I think it would be unfair of me to not say on the flip side how in social situations or when we’re in person, how super respectful he is—even his kids.”

‘Pereira’ scores second-straight title defense while Anthony smith drops 4 of his last 6

Stepping in on short notice, Anthony Smith squared off with No. 10 ranked middleweight contender Roman Dolidze after his originally scheduled opponent, Carlos Ulberg, withdrew due to an injury. ‘Lionheart’ came up on the scorecards, surrendering a unanimous decision to ‘The Caucasian.’ He has now dropped four of his last six fights.

Meanwhile, ‘Poatan’ secured his second light heavyweight title defense in three months, KO’ing Jiri Prochazka seconds into the second round with a perfectly executed head kick followed by a few ground-and-pound shots.

With Alex Pereira sitting atop the light heavyweight division and Smith sitting firmly outside the top 10, it’s unlikely we’ll ever see the two compete against one another on MMA’s biggest stage. Still, it’s nice to see that the pair have put their rivalry to rest, no matter how big or small it ever actually was.
