Anthony Smith vs. Aleksandar Rakic will serve as the new main event for the UFC’s upcoming August 29 card.

The card was initially expected to be headlined by a highly-anticipated featherweight matchup between Zabit Magomedsharipiv and Yair Rodriguez.

However, an injury to Rodriguez ruled him out with Magomedsharipov later returning home to Russia after failing to land a replacement opponent.

Instead, the light heavyweight encounter between Smith and Rakic will now be promoted to main event status. The news was announced during the UFC 252 broadcast last night and later confirmed on social media.

Given the short notice, Smith and Rakic’s fight will remain a three-rounder rather than the traditional five rounds a main event usually consists of.

Smith is coming off a fourth-round TKO defeat to Glover Teixeira in May and will be eager to return to the win column.

Rakic, meanwhile, is also coming off a defeat after losing a split verdict to Volkan Oezdemir in December. It was his first defeat in the UFC as well as his second overall in his professional career since his debut loss back in 2011.

Also featuring on the August 29 card is a welterweight matchup between Robbie Lawler and Neil Magny while Ryan Hall meets Ricardo Lamas in a featherweight tilt.

Former UFC Light Heavyweight Championship contender Anthony Smith had almost one full year off from fighting in the octagon before stepping back in in May to fight Glover Teixeira.

Smith was the presumptuous favorite heading into the bout, but Teixeira had his way with lionheart and battered him before securing a TKO in the 4th round. Smith is going to get back in the octagon following this brutal loss and face Alexander Rakic in a couple of weeks on August 29th. Smith recently explained why he thought it was too much time off,

“Too much, I would’ve gotten in there sooner. I think historically, I do better when I’m running out there a bunch and I’m super active. I was off for like 13 months going into that Glover fight and I don’t do well with long breaks, I don’t like long breaks,” Anthony Smith said to Line Movement. “My life falls apart, my mind falls apart. I just don’t do well when I don’t have a goal. I wanted to get right back in there and I would’ve fought sooner had I been given the opportunity.”

While Smith of course know Rakic will be a dangerous and tough test, he believes this training camp and quick turnaround can only help him, “I’m healthy man and I feel good, nothing is banged up and I’m in a good place mentally. I tend to perform better coming off a loss,” Smith added. “So, unfortunately for Aleksandar Rakic that is his duty.”

Anthony Smith believes that Max Rohskopf isn’t a quitter after retiring on the stool at the end of the second round against Austin Hubbard last Saturday.

The UFC light-heavyweight spoke to his Twitter followers after interviewing Max, he said. ” One of the realest interviews I’ve ever done with someone. Say what you want, the man i talked to today isn’t a quitter. He learned a valuable lesson the hard way and in front of the world. He has character traits that will take him far. Head up, kid. You’re gonna be just fine.”

After taking the fight on five days notice, Rohskopf had some success in round one with his wrestling. However he ultimately faded in the second round as he gassed out in what was scored a 10-8 round. The fighter then urged his corner to call the fight at the end of the round which Max eventually did himself despite his coaches trying to persuade him to continue.

Anthony Smith has joined Dana White in supporting Max’s decision. The UFC boss was speaking at the press conference after the Blaydes v Volkov card where he told reporters “In this sport, if you’re done; you’re done. You should absolutely be able to quit.”

Anthony Smith’s name was recently in the ‘quitting’ debate after he suffered a 5th round TKO to Glover Teixeira. Smith’s corner came under scrutiny for not pulling Anthony out of his main event against Teixeira. The US fighter was damaged and told his corner at the end of the fourth round that his teeth had fallen out. However, Smith spoke after the fight and said he would’ve fired his corner if they would have thrown the towel in.
