Jon Jones is not taking Anthony Smith lightly ahead of UFC 235.

Despite the fact that he’s listed as a heavy betting favorite against “Lionheart,” Jones will never make the mistake of underestimating an opponent again the way he did in his first goaround with Alexander Gustafsson.

“Bones” took to Instagram today and posted a photo of himself and his team doing some extensive film study. Here’s what he had to say:

“Take a good long hard look at this picture ladies and gentlemen. I believe with my whole heart you are looking at the most well put together coaching staff ever assembled in MMA history. While the rest of the world is counting Anthony Smith out, we’re up at 11:30 at night studying footage and rehearsing our tactics. “You can’t count the home runs of yesterday.” Meaning we have to go out and prove we’re the best team every time we step out there.

“I keep hearing my opponent mention not fighting the person but fighting the persons body. Just an FYI.,We don’t count on our past achievements to carry us through our next fights. We definitely don’t depend on opponents being afraid of us. That’s just silliness. What we do count on is what we can control, which is our hard work and preparation. We do believe that there is no coincidence to past achievements. There is no luck over here. This team has been built off of prayers and hard work for almost 10 years now.

“We’re finishing this fight Saturday night. Not because I’m Jon Bones Jones but because we’ve earned it! Will you be a witness?”

UFC 235 takes place on pay-per-view (PPV) from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on March 2, 2019. Jones and Smith’s clash will main event the evening. Smith earned his title shot after three-straight wins. He defeated Rashad Evans, Mauricio Rua, and Volkan Oezdemir. In the latter, Smith submitted “No Time” in the third round via rear-naked choke.

Should he be able to do the unthinkable and defeat Jones, it will be, arguably, the biggest upset the sport has ever seen.

Colby Covington fires back at #1 contender Anthony Smith, who is preparing for the biggest fight thus far in his MMA career.

UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones is slated to make his next title defense against Smith in the headliner of the UFC 235 pay-per-view event. Earlier this month, Colby attempted to troll Jones on Twitter. This led to Smith shutting him down.

The former interim UFC welterweight champion fired back at some recent comments made by Smith in an interview.

“Yeah, he’s a total mark. The guy, he hasn’t beat anybody that wasn’t 10 years past their prime coming off the steroids,” Covington told Submission Radio (H/T to MMAMania). “He’s on what, a three-fight win streak and he was just getting knocked out by 185-ers. So, the guy’s a complete joke. Everything he’s saying, ‘oh, we were in the gym’, dude, you never came up to me in the gym, you trained on the opposite side of the gym, who’s the b-tch?

“Like, the guy’s irrelevant, he shouldn’t even be fighting for a title,” he continued. “But hats off to him, he’s getting a title shot. But I’m gonna stick to winning belts. He’s never gonna be winning a belt, so that’s something we ain’t going to have to worry about. I’m gonna stick to winning belts and go to the White House.”

Covington made it clear that he isn’t quite ready to jump on that bandwagon of Smith that many people have done. This is despite the recent success that Smith has had under the UFC banner that led to him to the path of a title shot.

“I could give a f—k less about the guy. He’s a junior, he’s not on my level. He shouldn’t even be talking to a King. He’s never gonna win a belt, he’s never gonna go to the White House,” he said of Smith. “The guy’s an amateur and he shouldn’t even be fighting for a title, but he’s in one of the weakest divisions in the UFC, so hats off to him.

“He gets his show up money to take a loss and that’s the end of him. We’re focusing on me.”

Jon Jones wants to be a lot more active in 2019.

“Bones” spoke to MMAjunkie recently and shed some light on his intentions for his return to the 205-pound division after serving a United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) suspension. He’d like to get anywhere from three to four fights in this year:

“I keep arguing with myself whether I’m going to go once a quarter or just three times this year,” Jones said.

“My goal is to be active. Usually my feet hurt after fights because I’m a heavy kicker. Hopefully I’ll be able to get right back to training and just stay active. That’s my goal.”

Currently, Jones is preparing to make his first title defense since 2015. He’ll be headlining the UFC 235 pay-per-view (PPV) against Anthony “Lionheart” Smith. The show goes down from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on March 2, 2019. Jones reclaimed the light heavyweight title in December by defeating Alexander Gustafsson for the vacant strap.

Now, he’ll defend against Smith, who is on a three-fight win streak at the moment. In his last fight, Smith submitted Volkan Oezdemir in the third round of their bout at UFC Fight Night 138. Now, the former Bellator and Strikeforce competitor hopes to pull off the biggest upset in the sport’s history and become the first man to ever legitimately beat Jon Jones.
