Former UFC light heavyweight champion Rashad Evans is returning to the light heavyweight class that made him a household name.

The UFC confirmed to Brett Okamoto of ESPN.com that Evans is slated to return to the light heavyweight division after having a brief run at middleweight to take on Anthony Smith at the upcoming UFC 225 pay-per-view event.

It was also noted that Smith has also signed a new contract with the promotion. Just like Evans, Smith is also moving up to light heavyweight.

He is 4-2 under the UFC banner and holds a win over Hector Lombard. In his most recent bout, he suffered a TKO loss to Thiago Santos at a UFC Fight Night event in Belem, Brazil.

On the flip side, despite his lack of performance inside the Octagon, Evans continues to push forward with his pro-MMA career. He has dropped four consecutive contests with two of those bouts taking place at 185 pounds.

The UFC 225 pay-per-view event is scheduled to go down on Saturday, June 9, 2018, at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois. The main card will air on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET while the preliminary card will air on FOX Sports 1 at 8 p.m. ET and the promotion’s streaming service, UFC Fight Pass.

Claudia Gadelha taking on Carla Esparza, and Joseph Benavidez meeting Sergio Pettis have already been confirmed for the upcoming event.

The show doesn’t have the main event yet, but there’s a chance that the UFC will add UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker defending his title against Yoel Romero at this upcoming pay-per-view event, which could serve as the main event.

The promotion will announce more bouts for the event in the coming weeks. Here is the updated card:

Carla Esparza vs. Claudia Gadelha

Joseph Benavidez vs. Sergio Pettis

Rashad Coulter vs. Allen Crowder

Curtis Blaydes vs. Alistair Overeem

Rashad Evans vs. Anthony Smith

UFC Fight Night 125 emanated from Arena Guilherme Paraense in Belem, Brazil tonight (Saturday, February 3, 2018). The headliner saw undefeated rising star Eryk Anders look for the biggest win of his career against the legend Lyoto Machida. Machida got the decision win, but the bonuses went elsewhere.

Co-headliner Valentina Shevchenko took care of business in ruthless and destructive fashion against overmatched newcomer Priscila Cachoeira. “Bullet” tagged the Brazilian with punches on the feet but quickly went for takedowns in each of the first two rounds. In top position, she sliced up Cachoeira with elbows and punches from the top. The fight should have been stopped much sooner, but Shevchenko took care of that herself too, getting the rear-naked choke in the second. She banks an extra $50,000 for her Performance of the Night.

The other Performance of the Night went to 37-year-old Iuri Alcantara, who continued to defy Father Time. The inconsistent Brazilian had a signature performance against Joe Soto, hurting the American with a body kick before pouncing with punches in the first round. With the win, Alcantara snapped a two-fight losing streak and breathed new life into his career. And he also took home an extra $50,000.

Fight of the Night honors went to middleweight sluggers Thiago Santos and Anthony Smith. Santos won by second-round TKO after hurting Smith with a body shot early in the frame. But the first round was a back-and-forth battle that saw Santos mounted at one point. The two later exchanged simultaneous standing elbows, but Smith got the worst of it. Rocked and knocked down, he had to cling to a takedown attempt to survive the first. He did not find much of a reprieve in the second. But both he and Santos will wake up tomorrow $50,000 richer for their entertaining scrap.
