Former UFC featherweight contender, Artem Lobov is reportedly set to sue his Straight Blast Gym teammate and former undisputed UFC lightweight and featherweight champion, Conor McGregor, over the idea conception for the Dubliner’s whiskey, Proper No. Twelve.

As per an initial report from The Irish Independent, Artem Lobov has initiated proceedings in the High Court as he attempts to secure 5% of the proceeds teammate, McGregor had earned from his sale of Proper No. Twelve back in April of last year – reportedly in the region of $600 million.

Artem Lobov is set to bring proceedings against teammate, Conor McGregor

“My client is a retired professional fighter with a master’s degree from DCU in Finance and Capital Markets,” Lobov’s lawyer told The Irish Independent. “We have issued High Court proceedings on his behalf to enforce an agreement with Mr. McGregor regarding the Proper No. Twelve whiskey brand.”

“My client was an initial creator and co-founder of the concept to launch an Irish whiskey brand associated with Mr. McGregor,” Lobov’s lawyer said. “As these matters are now before the court, we will not be making any further comment.”

Earlier this year, Lobov claimed that he had come up with the idea for McGregor to pursue a venture into the whiskey market with his brand, Proper No. Twelve.

“I went on and met all different whisket distilleries, I called some and met some in person,” Artem Lobov told TalkSport. “I did my research and put a beautiful deal together. Once the deal was ready, I went to Conor and I said, ‘Conor, I have the deal ready for you. This is going to be a billion-dollar deal, no messing here.’ I’m not sure if he took me seriously or not at the time with the billon dollars.”

Denying Lobov’s claims, McGregor’s spokesperson, Karen J. Kessler told The Irish Independent that the Russian-born fighter was “incorrect”.

“Proper No. Twelve Irish whiskey was created, developed, branded and tirelessly promoted by Conor McGregor,” Kessler said in a statement released.

Artem Lobov has hit out at the people criticizing the Nate Diaz vs. Khamzat Chimaev fight.

Former mixed martial artist Lobov does not get why the UFC has received backlash for booking a fight that Diaz wanted. The fan favorite had been rallying to complete the last outing on his current deal. After months of being in a public dispute with the company over being shelved, the news of his next bout came as a surprise.

Artem Lobov defends UFC for Nate Diaz vs. Khamzat Chimaev booking

When the UFC announced Diaz vs. Chimaev, reactions from the MMA community were plenty. British legend Dan Hardy labeled it an ‘assassination attempt’ on Diaz, while others called it disrespectful to the legendary fighter. The pairing feels a bit odd due to the fact that Diaz is in the final stages of his competitive career whereas Chimaev is the hungry wolf on the way up.

In an interview with talkSPORT, Artem Lobov shared his thoughts on the matchup. He doesn’t understand why people are outraged over the booking and argued against the idea of him being given an easy last fight in the promotion.

“I don’t understand people saying that, that’s f****** crazy,” Lobov said (h/t Jordan Ellis/talkSPORT). “If you’re in the UFC and you still want to compete then you have to compete.

“Imagine you had a 100-metre race and you tell the rest of the guys, ‘don’t go 100 percent, go a bit slower, make it easier for the other guys.’

“What the f*** are you talking about? Are you a fighter? Are you ready to fight? Then retire. I have always been against padding records and this to me would feel like you’re trying to get an easy fight.”

Lobov respects Diaz but doesn’t like easy fights

‘The Russian Hammer’ was respectful of Diaz and made sure to clear it out in the light of his defense for the UFC.

“All respect to Nate Diaz for taking such a tough fight. Khamzat is a killer,” Lobov added.

“This is a massive fight and I respect Nate for accepting such a tough fight. That to me shows he is still in a great mindset, and anything can happen in a fight.”

“I will never, ever accept that they should give him an easier fight. If you’re ready 100 percent and you’re fighting, then fight. If you’re not there anymore or whatever, just stop fighting, don’t make a mockery of the sport.”

The former bare-knuckle boxer reflected on his own career, satisfied with the losses on his record because there wasn’t an easy bout.

“What they gonna do give you an easy fight? No. That is just not me at all. I would never do that in my life and I don’t like seeing that,” he concluded.

“My record is messed up. I’ve had all the losses but I hold my head high. I’ve never padded my record, never turned down a challenge, and never been tapped. This is something that I’ll carry with me proudly for the rest of my life.”

Artem Lobov

UFC featherweight alum and The Ultimate Fighter 22 finalist, Artem Lobov has revealed that he played a pivotal role in helping Straight Blast Gym teammate, Conor McGregor forge out an idea to create his now blockbuster spirit, Proper 12 Irish whiskey.

Lobov, an alum of the UFC, as well as Cage Warriors and BKFC (Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship) – most recently featured professionally back in July of last year under the Mahatch FC banner in Ukraine, suffering a fourth round TKO loss against boxer, Denys Berinchyk.

Retiring from professional combat sports soon thereafter, Lobov, 35, revealed during a recent interview with TalkSport reporter, Jordan Ellis – how he had come up with the idea for his teammate, McGregor to enter the whiskey business, as well as revealing that Blanchardstown reporter, Peter Carroll would also be penning a biography of his career this year.

“The selling point of my book will be the Proper 12 whiskey story,” Artem Lobov said. “A few people know, but this was actually my idea. I was the person who came up with the idea to do a whiskey for Conor (McGregor).”

Lobov revealed that Game of Thrones actor and powerlifter, Hafþór Björnsson had approached McGregor about the possibility of releasing a vodka in his native Iceland, however, Lobov steered the Dubliner to consider entering the whiskey market instead.

“After the second (Nate) Diaz fight, me and Conor were in the gym and we were talking one day, and he says to me, ‘Artem, Thor (Bjornsson) – ‘The Mountain’ out of Game of Thrones – I was chatting to him, and he’s offered me to do my own vodka,” Lobov explained.

“‘He said, he was doing one in Iceland and now he’s offering me the chance to do one as well, it looks like a pretty good deal what do you think about that?’”

Artem Lobov, who previously studied finance in college, consulted a former colleague at a Radisson Blu hotel, urging McGregor to explore the possibility of releasing a whiskey.

“I said to him before you look any further, ‘Here’s what I know about Irish whiskey,’ I told him about my presentation in college. I told him about the dominance of Irish whiskey and all of that,” Artem Lobov said. “He (McGregor) said, ‘You go off and see what deal you can put together’ and I went on my way.”

“Lucky for me, when I was studying in college, I used to work in the bar at the Radisson Hotel and I had a friend who worked in the bar with me. We were just two 18-year-old kids. I obviously left and did my own thing but Ivan stayed working in hospitality and worked his way up to be general manager of a hotel.”

“He put me in touch with a man called Niall, of Classic Drinks, a top drink distribution company in Ireland,” Artem Lobov explained. “Niall was kind enough to meet me – at the Radisson actually, and he was very generous with his information. Once I got that information, I went on and met all different whiskey distilleries. I called some and met some in person. I did my research and put a beautiful deal together.”

Artem Lobov revealed he turned down a $1,000,000 cash gift from Conor McGregor for brokering the deal

After approaching McGregor and his representatives regarding the deal he had drawn up and brokered, Lobov revealed the former two-weight champion and UFC superstar had offered him $1,000,000 – which he in turn, turned down.

“Conor offered me $1,000,000 but I turned it down, I didn’t accept it,” Artem Lobov revealed. “You know, throughout my career whenever I have helped Conor with camps, he offered to pay me for them camps, but I never accepted money from him. I said, ‘We’ve always been friends and helped each other. I never paid you for my camps, so I’m not gonna accept money from you for my camps either.’”

Set to release a book before the end of this year or at the beginning of 2023 – penned by the aforenoted, Carroll, Lobov remained coy on divulging too much information on his part in the establishing of Proper 12.

“With the whiskey, there was a bit more to the story about how that went about and what happened, but I don’t want to share that yet,” Artem Lobov said. “I’m hoping my book does well and I will tell the story in the book.”

Former UFC featherweight and Bare Knuckle FC star Artem Lobov has admitted there are two scenarios that could draw him out of retirement.

Over the course of his 11-year career in professional combat sports, Lobov became one of the most popular and recognizable names. Whether through his fighting style, appearance on The Ultimate Fighter, or connection to Conor McGregor and the SBC Ireland team, every fan knows “The Russian Hammer.”

After leaving mixed martial arts with a 13-15-1 record, a résumé that includes two UFC victories, following his defeat to Michael Johnson in 2018, Lobov turned his attention to bare-knuckle boxing.

After signing a lucrative deal with BKFC, the Russian star won his opening two bouts with the promotion, first against Jason Knight and then against legendary former boxing champion Pauli Malignaggi just two months later.

But after back-to-back losses to Knight and Denys Berinchyk, the latter of which took place under the promotional banner of Mahatch FC, Lobov took a realistic look at his career, aspirations, and responsibilities. He decided to call time on his career last July, a week after his final appearance in combat sports.

Lobov Admits Path Back To Action Exists

After the announcement, many in the community reflected on Lobov’s memorable career as they bid farewell to a combat sports mainstay. While the 35-year-old doesn’t see himself breaking his promise to himself and darting in and out of retirement, he has provided some hope for fans who wish to see him back in action.

During a recent appearance on Ariel Helwani’s The MMA Hour, Lobov laid out two scenarios that would clench his fists and bring him back to the cage or ring. As unlikely as they seem, the answer will certainly instil some hope into the hearts of his loyal fanbase.

“I gave myself a promise, ‘Artem, you will not go back in there, no matter what. Fucking make it elsewhere now, it doesn’t matter what happens, it doesn’t matter how much you want to go back in there. Do not go back in there.’

“There’s only two ways that I go back to fighting; the (Zubaira) Tukhugov fight, that goes without retirement, I don’t care If I am retired or not, I always want that fight, no matter what,” Lobov continued. “And, if somebody wants to make my dreams come true and offer me seven figures, well then it’s going to change things up… seven figures could allow you to set up your financial future for the family, and that’s a big thing for me, of course. And open up a lot of doors as well. I would consider coming back for those reasons.”

Lobov and Tukhugov were set to collide back at UFC Fight Night 138 in October 2018. The clash would have extended the fiery rivalry between Khabib Nurmagoemdov’s camp and that of Conor McGregor.

However, two weeks prior at UFC 229, the groups were engaged in a post-fight brawl following Khabib’s submission victory over “The Notorious” Irishman. Heavily involved, and even throwing punches at McGregor, was Tukhugov. The Dagestani was removed from his fight with Lobov, who went on to face Johnson instead.

Given the feud the two sides shared a number of years ago, it’s unsurprising Lobov would still be willing to exact some revenge for his former teammate by entering the cage with Tukhugov.

As for the other return scenario, money is money, who could blame him?
