Artem Lobov may have lost to Cub Swanson in the main event of last night’s (Sat., April 22, 2017) UFC Fight Night 108 (watch highlights here) from Nashville, but the unranked “Russian Hammer” gained a ton of fans in the process by meeting the No. 4-ranked featherweight in one of the most entertaining bouts of the year so far.

Lobov’s previous claim to fame was his close friendship with UFC lightweight champ Conor McGregor, but his brawl with Swanson proved the SBG Gym product was a game challenger with a chin of iron and the heart of a lion. After the bout, McGregor, the man many feel is directly responsible for Lobov even being in the UFC. took to his official Instagram account to offer some encouraging words of support and respect for his close friend:

Not surprisingly, McGregor revealed he was proud of his sparring partner, choosing to focus on Lobov’s courage in the face of the many ups and downs in a fighter’s career:

“That was a great fight. Proud of my brother Artem! What a ride it’s been for the Russian Hammer. In a career filled with ups and downs he has never backed down from anything. Nothing but love and respect always my brother.”

Legions of fans were quick to jump all over Lobov for his seemingly undeserving record and his perceived riding of McGregor’s coattails, but he proved he deserved to be in the cage with the best 145-pound talent in the world last night by absorbing an absolutely insane amount of flashy, technical offense from Swanson, including a spinning wheel kick, spinning elbow, head kicks, and an endless barrage of power punches.

The “Russian Hammer” earned every bit of his nickname last night, and it’s hardly a surprise to see the man who got him there show his respect for the all-out brawl fans were treated to last night.

Now, only if “The Notorious” would return to the UFC to hand fans his own brand of mixed martial arts entertainment.

UFC Fight Night 108 emanated tonight (Saturday, April 22, 2017) from the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, TN, and was headlined by a featherweight scrap between Cub Swanson and Artem Lobov.

The fight was much more competitive than anticipated, as it went to a five-round decision, with Lobov winning the first on many scorecards and producing a tight fourth. The two featherweights traded punches, leg kicks, and even a few takedowns. Swanson started to take over with superior volume, kicks, and grappling prowess, taking Lobov’s back on a couple of occasions. Their back and forth war garnered each man an extra $50,000 bonus for Fight of the Night.

In other main card action, Mike Perry came out on top in a slugfest with long-time UFC veteran Jake Ellenberger. A competitive first round gave way to Perry taking over in round two. A left hook knocked Ellenberger down, but he would survive and make his way back to his feet. Perry would meet him in the clinch and moments later, uncork a gnarly standing elbow that sent Ellenberger crashing to his back, unconscious before he hit the mat. Perry walked away without the need for any follow-up blows, and he would walk away $50,000 richer with his Performance of the Night bonus.

Finally, in an undercard former TUF 24 flyweight competitor Brandon Moreno scored another impressive submission victory on the durable and scrappy Dustin Ortiz. After dropping the first round to Ortiz’s continual takedowns, Moreno dropped Ortiz with a scintillating head kick, pounced on his back, and wrapped up the rear-naked choke moments later. Ortiz went to sleep rather than tap out. Moreno left the Octagon 3-0 and $50,000 richer with his Performance of the Night bonus.

In a bout that threw all adherence to the official rankings out the window, No. 4-ranked Cub Swanson met unranked 14-12 Artem Lobov in the main event of tonight’s (Sat., April 22, 2017) UFC Fight Night 108 from the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee after “The Russian Hammer” called the veteran out on social media.

The veteran was justifiably a big favorite, but when the dust settled on the unorthodox fight, Lobov had made legions of new fans and gained a ton of newfound respect in the process by giving Swanson all he could handle.  Lobov took Swanson down in the first round and appeared to wobble him with a big strike in the fifth, absorbing all of ‘Beautiful Destruction’s’ varied arsenal.

For his part, the favored Swanson landed a seemingly nonstop barrage of weapons from all angles, rocking Lobov with a spinning wheel kick, a head kick, a spinning back elbow, and many big shots. He was willing to eat a shot to land one of his own, but also had Lobov’s back to look for a rear-naked in the third round and wore Lobov with a ruthless assault throughout the grueling five-round bout.

It was a thrilling contest that was a lot closer than everyone thought it would be, and also a contest that made you wonder if all these mounting wars will catch up to Swanson.

For now, watch the full fight video highlights of his thrilling fourth straight victory:

UFC Fight Night 108 went down tonight (Saturday, April 22, 2017) from the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, TN. In a puzzling main event, #4 ranked Cub Swanson duked it out with unranked Conor McGregor training partner Artem Lobov. It turned out to be much more competitive than anticipated.

Swanson swept the scorecards, but Lobov seemed to take round one (and did on two judges’ cards). His chin, leg and body kicks, and solid counter-punching kept him in the fight from start to finish. Lobov even landed a first-round takedown. But Swanson commanded most of the rest of 25-minute affair. His striking diversity and the occasional trip or hip toss from the clinch paid dividends. Swanson would take Lobov’s back and threaten with chokes on a couple of occasions.

The co-main saw the return of Al Iaquinta after more than two years on the sidelines. He took on the grizzled vet of all grizzled vets, Diego Sanchez. Unfortunately, for Sanchez, his fabled chin seems to finally be failing him.

Iaquinta dropped Sanchez with a blistering right inside the first 90 seconds. Sanchez seemed to recover, baring his teeth in his trademark mean mug. But “Ragin’ Al” countered him with another right hand moments later that sent a slumped over and unconscious Sanchez to the floor, forcing referee “Big” John McCarthy to rush in to save “Lionheart” from further punishment.

Here’s how MMA Twitter reacted to these two action-packed bouts:
