Conor McGregor pushing to fight Michael Chandler at UFC 300 if it was up to him he'd be fighting Saturday

Former two-weight champion, Conor McGregor is still keen on fighting at a monumental UFC 300 card in April of next year according to his manager, Paradigm Sports ace, Audie Attar – with the Dubliner still earmarked to fight long-time rival, Michael Chandler in a 2024 return to the sport.

McGregor, a former undisputed lightweight and featherweight champion under the banner of the promotion, has been sidelined since he headlined UFC 264 back in July 2021, fracturing his left tibia and fibula in an opening round doctor’s stoppage TKO loss to Dustin Poirier in the pair’s trilogy rubber match at the lightweight limit.

And serving as an opposing head coach on The Ultimate Fighter 31 earlier this year, McGregor squared off with former lightweight title challenger, Chandler, with the Missouri native lined up to fight the ex-two-division gold holder in his return to active competition.

Linked with a potential headlining bout atop a massive UFC 300 card on April 13. next – McGregor has also been teased as a fighter apart of the Dana White-led organization’s summer schedule next year.

Audie Attar talks Conor McGregor’s fighting future

However, according to the Dubliner’s manager, Attar, the team and the UFC star are still pushing hard to see him feature at UFC 300.

“If it was up to him (Conor McGregor), he’d be fighting Saturday, so ultimately, we’re just trying to make sure we’re doing everything right and following all the standard operating procedures to get him back in the Octagon as soon as possible,” Audie Attar told MMA Junkie at the MMA Awards. “UFC 300 would be amazing, and obviously, we’re pushing as hard as we can to make that happen. Ultimately, it’s going to be an exciting 2024 for his return.”

“Look, I think that’s the likeliest opponent,” Attar told of a fight with Michael Chandler. “They just did The Ultimate Fighter together, and I think the fans want to see that fight, but there are other opponents as well. At the end of the day, the UFC is still keen on Michael Chandler and unless something changes there, I certainly think that’s who’s going to be.”

Conor McGregor

Audie Attar, the manager and representative of former two-weight UFC champion, Conor McGregor has claimed the appeal of fighting the Dubliner still remains as high as ever for his roster compatriots, maintaining the “color of the panties” have not changed despite the former’s recent run of form.

Tasked with snapping a run of two consecutive losses for the first time in his professional mixed martial arts career in his impending Octagon return, Conor McGregor, the current #12 ranked lightweight contender, has been out of action since July of last year.

Sidelined for the 14 months since, the 34-year-old striker dropped a first round doctor’s stoppage TKO loss against three-time opponent, Dustin Poirier, fracturing his left tibia in the final stages of the opening frame.

Conor McGregor suffered his first-ever KO loss in MMA last year

The defeat came as the Crumlin native’s second on the trot against former interim 155lbs champion, Poirier, who stopped McGregor with a slew of second round strikes in January of last year. The defeat came as the first time McGregor had been stopped with strikes professionally to boot.

Linked with a scores of potential opponents in his return – both at lightweight and welterweight, McGregor is not expected to feature inside the Octagon in 2022, with a return at the beginning of 2023 regarded as the likelier outcome for the Straight Blast Gym mainstay.

According to Attar, the manager of the counter striker, his client is still chomping at the bit to land a return to the Octagon and to the pinnacle of the sport once more.

“First and foremost, he (Conor McGregor) loves this sport,” Audie Attar told MMA Junkie. “I think that’s the one thing that’s very special about him. It’s why it’s allowed him to reach a level of success that most fighters aspire to achieve. He loves it. The second part is he’s a competitor.”

“Does he have more ambitions and goals that he wants to achieve? Absolutely,” Attar added. “I think that’s what makes it so special and so intriguing and it’s going to be an interesting story, and I do believe it’s going to be greatest comeback in sports history.”

Stressing the appeal of still landing a fight with McGregor – Attar pointed to the latter’s infamous 2015 “red panty night” soundbite, insisting the want to fight his client still remains at its height.

“I mean, Conor said it better: It’s red panty night when you fight him,” Attar said. “So at the end of the day, I don’t think it’s changed. The color of the panties haven’t changed. So ultimately, I think a lot of the fighters want that. They want that payday, but they also want that experience to be able to say that they fought Conor McGregor. They all aspire to win that fight, and so that’s a normal thing. I don’t think anybody’s shocked by that.”

Expect to see the old Conor McGregor back.

McGregor makes his return to the Octagon for the first time in 15 months when he faces Donald Cerrone in the UFC 246 headliner on January 18.

In the meantime, the Irishman has regularly been in the headlines for all the wrong reasons. But with his return looming in just three weeks, his manager Audie Attar believes there is renewed focus within McGregor:

“I’ve seen a level of fire that’s been reignited with him,” Attar told the Post (via SCMP). “And I think that it’s no secret in terms of how successful he’s been. We’ve done things that nobody ever thought we could do, from the Floyd Mayweather fight to the type of contracts that he’s been able to earn. We’re very proud of that. Those don’t come easy.

“But those come with a lot of, I think, distractions and things that allow you to lose sight of what was really important to you. And the one thing that’s exciting for me is to see he’s refocused, and we all need that in life.”

Attar notably claimed he was “excited” because he hasn’t seen this level of commitment from McGregor since the old days where he was dominating the sport.

“I’m just so excited because I haven’t seen this in a couple of years and I’m telling people just sit back and you’ll see a performance of an old Conor, and I really believe that, because I believe that work’s being put in, and you can’t fake that,” he added.

“The thing about Conor McGregor is, if he focuses on his process, on what he can control, the outcome will be great, no matter who’s in front of him. That’s the key, and that’s the one thing we keep talking about, which he keeps talking about over and over again. What excites me is that he’s focused on the season, he’s focused on the process, he’s focused on what he controls, and that’s why all of those fights could potentially make sense, they’re all exciting.

“So it’s really what’s gonna motivate him, and keep driving him and his ambitions to be the best him out there. And I think that then that will give the fans what they wanna see, great competition against a worthy opponent, and bringing something that is very relatable, a guy that has achieved and dreamed and dared to do something that nobody thought he could do it.”
