For the past several years, a rivalry seems to have brewed between the mixed martial arts (MMA) and boxing communities.

Things really sparked off following Conor McGregor and Floyd “Money” Mayweather’s bout in 2017. This fight also created the sub-rivalry of McGregor vs. Paulie Malignaggi. Malignaggi served as a sparring partner to McGregor prior to his fight with Mayweather.

However, once McGregor leaked photos from their sessions, including one video in particular in which it looked like the former boxing world champion was knocked down, Malignaggi left the camp. For the past several years Malignaggi has held a grudge over the incident. So much so that he has found his way into a bare-knuckle boxing match against McGregor’s close friend and training partner Artem Lobov.

The pair headline BKFC 6 on June 22. Recently speaking to Fight Hype, Malignaggi had some harsh comments for the MMA community, who he feels has disrespected the sport of boxing as of late. While some claim MMA is more dangerous than boxing, Malignaggi defends by saying his sport has a much higher number of deaths in its history (via BJPenn.com):

“Lobov and the mixed martial arts community have really disrespected my sport in a lot of ways; boxing, saying that we fight with pads on and it’s not a real fighting sport and what not, but we have all the deaths,” Malignaggi said.

“We have more of the deaths by a long shot. We have more of the permanent damage by a long shot. This is not to diminish the danger of mixed martial arts or any other combat sport, but there is a reason why boxing has more deaths and more traumatic brain injuries in one night because we are the most dangerous combat sport.

This prompted a response from former UFC welterweight title challenger, and now commentator, Dan Hardy. While speaking on a Sirius XM broadcast, Hardy said he’s disappointed Malignagi lumped all MMA fans into one category:

“It disappoints me that he is grouping all MMA fans together,” Hardy said. “We are not all grouped together, we are not poking fun at boxing because they wear pads, we do respect it and it’s often been boxing that has drawn the ‘us vs you’ argument because of the rise of MMA.”

Hardy also found Malignaggi’s comments about boxing having the most deaths to be in poor taste. Instead, the Englishman believes we should focus on analyzing those deaths and attempting to prevent them as much as possible.

He also explained why Malignaggi’s experience in bare-knuckle boxing will be much different from his years fighting with padded gloves:

“To claim the deaths in boxing is ridiculous, to say we’re [boxing] the toughest sport because we have the most deaths is silly,” Hardy said. “Maybe what we should do is analyze why there are deaths in boxing and see if we can fix it, and part of the problem maybe is [that] they are wearing padded hands.

“Now Paulie is going to get a very different look when he’s bare-knuckle boxing cause he’s going to break both his hands on Artem Lobov’s head. He’s got soft hands and no punching power as it is… He’s also set the bar very high now because if he goes into this fight against Artem, he breaks both his hands and he can’t continue to fight what’s he going to do, tough guy it through?

“What we’re interested in is the most efficient and effective style of fighting. It’s not a comparison with boxing, it never has been. I appreciate the art of boxing, but it is a small element of the whole of combat sports and it has been so refined that it is not really very realistic in real combat.”

Things got a bit wild this week at the Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship (BKFC) press conference featuring Paulie Malignaggi and Artem Lobov.

Between Malignaggi trying to bonk Lobov with the mic and the loogie he spat at the “Russian Hammer,” it was an eventful day at Dave & Buster’s in Times Square, New York.

Lobov took to the podium to speak first, then it was Malignaggi’s turn. The first minute or so saw the former boxing champ give a bunch of shout-outs, then it hit the fan (via MMA Junkie):

“My hands are frickin’ like razor blades, no doubt,” Malignaggi said. “First of all, get a good look at this guy’s face right now, the way it looks right now. Because next month I’m gonna make it all look like a road map. Back in the day, before we had MapQuest and Waze and everything, we had road maps. You’d pull them out, they had a bunch of lines all over them. I’m gonna make this guy’s face look like a road map next month. Permanently, because these scars are not gonna go away.”

“I wasn’t made for this, right? I wasn’t made for this bare knuckle stuff,” Malignaggi said. “One thing about my career, I’ve always been known as one of the toughest guys in boxing, besides winning two world titles. This guy here, who’s known as a punching bag with a loud mouth, was known as the guy who just trained with Conor McGregor. What is this guy’s accomplishments?”

After about five minutes of hurling insults back and forth (which strangely enough might last longer than their fight), Malignaggi issued his most obscene threat to Lobov yet.

“You’re a piece of (expletive), and I’m gonna treat you like the dirtbag that you are,” Malignaggi said. “Because after I beat the (expletive) out of you, I’m gonna spit on you. I might take out my (expletive) and piss on you. … I’m gonna take out my (expletive) and knock your teeth out and piss in that toothless mouth of yours.”

BKFC 6 will take place in Tampa, Florida, on June 22.

Earlier today (Mon. May 20, 2019) Paulie Malignaggi and Artem Lobov took part in a Bare Knuckle FC press conference.

The two men will settle their differences in a bare knuckle boxing fight from Tampa, Florida, on June 22. There has been a ton of animosity between both fighters in the lead-up to the pay-per-view (PPV). They have nearly come to blows several times, including earlier today.

Malignaggi spat at Lobov during their face-off today. Speaking with The MacLife shortly after, “The Russian Hammer” gave his thoughts on the incident:

“Yeah, he tried to spit or whatever, but lets be honest, I hate all this fake sh*t. Lets be honest, if we were left in a room just me and him, would he do things – spit on me?

“I don’t think so. He’d be broke up in seconds. That is a fact. It would take me two seconds to take him down and it would take me another two seconds to step on his neck and break it. That would have been it. But here, there’s a crowd, he’s tough, he’s acting this and that, talking all that sh*t. I just hope he does the same – he has the same intensity on fight night.”

Malignaggi hasn’t had a professional fight since March of 2017. He was knocked out by Sam Eggington in the eighth round of their welterweight bout from the O2 Arena. Now, he’ll return to take on Lobov, who made a name for himself in the world of mixed martial arts (MMA).

Lobov was successful in his BKFC debut against Jason Knight in April. The pair put on an amazing main event, which Lobov won via unanimous decision.
