Belal Muhammad Kamaru Usman

After UFC 286, Belal Muhammad did not like what UFC president Dana White had to say. While Muhammad might have expected White to say that there was no certain opponent Edwards would be fighting next, he was shocked when the UFC president publically declared Edwards’ next opponent would indeed be Colby Covington.

If that wasn’t worse enough, Dana White also said that the UFC was actively looking to align a matchup between Belal Muhammad and the undefeated Shavkat Rahkmonov. A fight that Belal Muhammad openly told MMA Fighting he knew nothing about.

“I was sitting there watching it (UFC 286’s post-fight press conference) like, ‘I want to see what he’s going to say, I hope somebody asks him what’s going on and who’s next,’ and I was hoping he would say, ‘We don’t make fights after the title fight.’ But then he came out and said Colby [Covington] was for sure [next],” Muhammad began, speaking to MMA Fighting. “You’re sitting there and, ‘We’re trying to make Shavkat [versus Belal].’ I was like, what? Where did this come from?

Belal Muhammad describes shock at potential Shavkat Rahkmonov matchup, talks about wanting Kamaru Usman next

Obviously, Belal Muhammad had not been informed he might be facing the undefeated monster that was Shavkat Rahkmonov. He describes calling his manager, definitely confused on what was going on.

“I’m calling my manager,” Muhammad described. “Like, what’s going on? He’s like, ‘Brother, I don’t know what’s going on.’”

After the events of that night transpired, Muhammad told MMA Fighting that he had since met with UFC president Dana White and talked things over. While he doesn’t describe himself as a man that shies away from any challenge, he does admit hearing about the Rahkmonov matchup live at the press conference definitely confused him.

“I’m never a guy that shies away from the tough fights,” Muhammad continued. “I’ve been calling for the toughest fights forever, and he’s obviously on a good run, a streak, but I just beat the hot prospect [in Sean Brady]. I just beat the guy that was 15-0. He’s a dangerous fighter, but to me, it’s still fighting backward. It’s fighting downwards. It’s fighting another guy that [if] you beat him, ‘Well, he wasn’t as good as we thought he was. Who’s that?’”

“After beating Sean Brady, [I heard], ‘Oh, Sean Brady sucks, he’s nobody, you think you’re going to get a title shot off of that?’” Muhammad sighed. “I’m sitting there thinking if Sean Brady would have won, Sean Brady would have got the title fight. Sean Brady would have been next in line because he would have been 16-0, and they’re like, ‘This guy is amazing!’”

‘Remember the Name’ is still hopeful for a shot at the gold but also said that if things get signed between Edwards and Covington, he’s only really looking to face Usman.

“For me, now, I’m only looking upwards,” Muhammad declared. “The only guys upwards are Colby, Leon, and Kamaru. Kamaru didn’t take no damage in this fight and he’s still fighting, he’s still talking about fighting — I think that’s a fight that makes sense. I’ve had to the two title challengers in my résumé, I beat Demian Maia, I beat ‘Wonderboy’ [Stephen Thompson]. I had the hot contender in [Vicente] Luque — I beat Luque. I had the hot prospect in Sean Brady. The only thing I don’t have on my résumé is that name everybody recognizes, everybody knows, and that was a former champion. A guy that people consider one of the best welterweights to do it.”

“If that’s the name that is going to get me a [title] shot — if it’s going to be somebody, it’s going to be either Usman, Colby, or Leon. It’s only fighting upwards from here. I think that’s the only way I’m going to be guaranteed anything.”

Belal Muhammad describes his next move in further detail

If the Usman fight is unattainable, Muhammad believes a fight with Colby Covington is one of the only things that makes any sense. In his opinion, he’s right there in the mix for either a #1 contender fight or even a title shot.

“I’m hoping Leon sticks to his guns, and he does turn him down, and he says, ‘I’m not going to fight Colby,’” Muhammad said. “If that’s the case, me [versus] Colby. You see all this trash talk, Colby’s acting like he’s the best in the world, you supposedly just had a camp to weigh in — cool, let’s fight in Miami. Let’s fight the week after. Let’s fight in June. I’m down to fight whenever. I’ll fight Colby next.”

“Let’s get right back in the cage right now,” Belal Muhammad continued. “Let’s do it. Then you could silence all the doubters that [say] you didn’t earn it, you didn’t deserve it, why are you getting it? Let’s fight. Leon just fought.”

Sadly, since this interview, it seems the fight between Leon Edwards and Colby Covington is as good as done, signed, and sealed. So, Belal Muhammad must be indeed angling for the fight with Kamaru Usman.

Former UFC interim welterweight champion, Colby Covington blasts commentator Jon Anik for associating with ‘racist’ Belal Muhammad.

Covington made headlines last week, flying to London to weigh in as a last minute backup for the main event of UFC 286. ‘Chaos’ told reporters that he was called in last Tuesday and made a surprise cameo, weighing in on the Friday – something that had been kept heavily under wraps until his appearance.

Following the main event for which he was cageside, they would show Covington during Leon Edwards’ victory speech in order to cut a promo. Later on that night, UFC President Dana White announced that the American would be next in line for the title.

Colby Covington slams Jon Anik

Following the announcement, Covington has done the rounds in the media in attempt to build the profile of the next fight while leaning heavily into his ‘heel’ persona.

However, it was not Edwards who Covington would take issue with this time. Bizarrely when talking to MMAFighting, the 35-year-old would hammer the UFC’s lead play-by-play commentator, Jon Anik.

“And you know who’s hanging out and associating with that racist? Jon Anik, Covington said. “Jon Anik, you know, supports that racism. He’s [Anik] supposed to be impartial, he’s supposed to have that headset, he’s supposed to be an interviewer, and remain impartial.

You want to be a cheerleader? Let down the headset, pick up the pom-poms, go on the side, and be a cheerleader”, Covington continued. “You wanted to lick my fricking balls in London, but then you wanted to go behind the stage and cheerlead for a racist. So he [Anik] associates with racism and Belal Muhammad.

“Jon Anik, dude, I don’t want your kids to grow up without a dad, just realize you live in Boca, I live in Miami motherf**ker, you’re not too far from me, so you better shut your f**king mouth. You poke the bear, now you get the bear comes after you.”

Prior to the announcement, Muhammad had been a name that had been put forward as another viable candidate for a title shot and has called out and been extremely critical of Covington.

Colby Covington wants to see Belal Muhammad kicked out of the UFC after making what he perceived to be a racist comment.

Following Leon Edwards’ successful defense of the UFC welterweight title on Saturday night, UFC present Dana White suggested that Colby Covington would be the next man in line to challenge ‘Rocky’ for the 170-pound crown. The revelation did not sit well with many fans, who quickly questioned why ‘Chaos’ would be next after going 2-2 in his last four with the two losses already coming in UFC title opportunities.

Leon Edwards added some fuel to the fire during his appearance on The MMA Hour, suggesting there may be some “Dana White privilege” at play, but it was Belal Muhammad’s comment that really struck a chord with the conservatives’ chosen champion. MMA journalist Aaron Bronsteter posted a quote of Edwards questioning why Colby Covington would be next in line. Muhammad then chimed in in a since-deleted tweet, suggesting that ‘Chaos’ is the next man up simply because “He’s white.”

Colby Covington Snapped on Belal Muhammad After ‘Disgusting’ Accusation

After learning of Belal Muhammad’s comment, Colby Covington went off on the streaking welterweight contender, calling for his immediate dismissal from the UFC.

“I’m not going to pick some kid up that is on the bottom of the prelims. You got to earn your way up here and that guy is racist, man,” Covington said to James Lynch. “He was saying the only reason that happened is because I’m white. How is that not racist? That is disgusting. That is despicable, that is f*cking disgusting, man. I would never say that and use someone’s color of their skin by that’s why they got that done. Disgusting, man. He should literally be fined and kicked out of the UFC.

“Oh my gosh, honestly, I can’t even imagine. Everything I worked my entire life for would be sunken, my ship would be sunken,” Covington said. “That would be the end of Colby ‘Chaos’ Covington. But, I would never say something so stupid because it has nothing to do with that ever. I don’t care what color skin you are, man, I look at the integrity inside your heart and the person that you are. I look at other things, how smart you are. It’s just disgusting, man” (Transcription by BJPenn.com).

While suggesting Colby Covington receiving an undeserved title opportunity because he’s white is rather ridiculous considering how many non-white non-American world champions there are in the UFC, one can certainly understand the frustration that both Leon Edwards and Belal Muhammad are experiencing. Before ‘Rocky’ had the opportunity to deliver the ‘kick heard ’round the world‘ at UFC 278 last year, he had to win nine straight fights. Muhammad is currently on an eight-fight win streak. Certainly enough to justify a title opportunity, but he is once again being passed up for a fighter who A) hasn’t fought a single man in the welterweight division’s top 10 and B) already received two title opportunities and came up short in both.

There is no denying that Belal Muhammad’s comment was out of line, but the fact remains that few deserve a title opportunity more than him and Colby Covington is not one of those few.

With a five-fight win streak since returning to the welterweight division, Joaquin Buckley now finds himself ranked inside the top 10 at 170-pounds. His latest win was also his biggest, stopping Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson at UFC 307 to climb to the #9-spot.

Now, Buckley is looking for another opponent that can put him into the title picture after beating the likes of Thompson, Nursulton Ruziboev and Vicente Luque. The issue he’s encountering is that many of the big names ahead of him are not interested in taking the fight.

In order for Buckley to get within reach of a title shot, he will need another big name on his resume but that’s not possible if he can’t make this line up for him. In a recent interview with Inside Fighting, Buckley was asked who he thinks would accept a fight with him that’s currently above him in the rankings.

He struggled to think of too many examples, picking out three names in the end with one of them being the current champion.

“Accept a fight? That’s a hard one. I believe the ones that are true fighters and true martial artists who would love to step into the cage with me are JDM (Jack Della Maddalena), is one of them… Damn, that’s kinda crazy, when I really start to think about it. Ian Garry probably… Belal Muhammad, that’s it bro. That’s it. When you talk about really wanna step in the cage with me, I don’t think there’s a lot of dudes that went to step in there with me.”

Buckley then proceeded to list several names that he doesn’t think would agree to fight him, including Kamaru Usman who he called out after his most recent win.

“Gilbert don’t want to step in there with me, Leon Edwards wouldn’t want to step in there with me, Colby Covington wouldn’t want to step in there with me. We see Usman didn’t want that work. Sean Brady blocked me from Instagram so he definitely don’t want to get the work. There’s not a lot of guys that’s willing to step in that cage with me, I’ll tell you that.”

UFC Welterweight Champion Belal Muhammad wants to be active — just as much as record-breaker Alex Pereira.

Muhammad has fought once in the past 17 months, but that inactivity is not down to his doing. After defeating Gilbert Burns on short notice in May 2023, “Remember the Name” banked his long-awaited first title shot on MMA’s biggest stage.

Unfortunately for him, he had to wait for then-champion Leon Edwards to settle his business with Colby Covington before cashing in on his opportunity at UFC 304 in Manchester, England this past July.

Despite a lengthy break from competition, Muhammad looked at his best inside the Co-op Live, dominating Edwards across five rounds to extend his unbeaten run to 11 and capture the 170-pound crown.

The new kingpin will now return five months later to put his gold on the line for the first time at UFC 310 this December, headlining the pay-per-view event opposite the undefeated Shavkat Rakhmonov.

Muhammad outlined his plans for the new year should he get past the threat posed by “Nomad” during a recent interview with John Morgan for Grind City Media.

While he’ll make the walk on Dec. 7 as the underdog, “Remember the Name” is no stranger to upsetting the odds. And he fully expects to do so once again before embarking on an Alex Pereira-esque campaign in 2025.

“I love to fight. It’s so hard to stay healthy in this game that if if I’m healthy, I wanna be in the cage,” Muhammad said. “People are like, ‘Oh, we thought you were gonna wait a year to defend and you’re gonna push it longer because it took you this long to get in.’ Sitting on the couch doesn’t get you paid, sitting on the couch doesn’t make me happy. I wanna get happy by competing. I love to compete and it’s such a small window in this game where you don’t know what tomorrow is gonna hold that I’d rather stay busy.

“The hardest thing for me was that wait (after beating Gilbert Burns),” Muhammad continued. “I wanted to get into the cage. I wanted to fight. And then for 2025, I’m trying to get on that Alex Pereira schedule. … Next year, for myself, is just (about) staying busy.”

After winning the light heavyweight title in late 2023, Pereira has gone on to rack up three straight defenses this year in record-breaking speed. His victims were Jamahal Hill at UFC 300 in April, Ji?í Procházka at UFC 303 in June, and Khalil Rountree at UFC 307 earlier this month.

Before looking to potentially replicate that feat next year, Muhammad must first vault his reign’s first hurdle by getting the better of Rakhmonov at Las Vegas’ T-Mobile Arena.
